Truly magnificent! As a design student at Newcastle in the 1970's I'd always try and catch the Deltic hauled 'Aberdonian' service when heading home for the weekend - and on several occasions it would the 'Royal Scots Grey'. The sight and sound of the supremely powerful throbbing Deltic entering the station was enough to send a shiver down the spine. Whilst boarding I sensed a mighty beast straining at the leash to be set free and once more devouring the miles. It's very design just exudes POWER - yet with an air of capable friendliness too - a locomotive you know will look after it's passengers as it powers down the lines....... accompanied of course by the glorious and wonderfully unique sound of it's twin Napiers. A great video - thank you!

Back in the 80s, on a visit to UK, I was waiting to leave Newcastle for London, and the train drew in. I knew the Deltics were soon to be withdrawn. A couple of enthusiasts had rubbing wax and paper over the loco's nameplate and were busy collecting their memento of KOYLI.

Great sound and very nippy. Brought back memories of my time on the old Travelling Post Office service. London to Newcastle and return the next evening. I always used to give the Celtic a friendly pat as I walked past. Brilliant. They don,t make them like that anymore.

There are 18 cylinders and 36 pistons on a Deltic. That causes the loud, intense buzzing exhaust note it has, instead of the deep gurgle of other diesel locos.

How do they maintain this and other Deltics? Accounts from their time in service remarked that the repair procedure for almost anything was to remove the engine and ship it to the Napier factory to be worked on - its operation was so different from that of a standard four-stroke diesel, and it was so hard to take apart, that only the experts back at headquarters really knew how to fix them.

Its current owners wol want tp recoup the 2 powerunit swaps and urgent rewire, plus the instal of full telematocs and digital instrumets tto keep it mainline certified. God knows where the NRM will magic the £50k per loco ro keep the likes pf Snotrag and koyli running. Eben the DPS are now having doubts afyer Altcidon emptied coffers and atill needs a lot if wirk. Thw sale of industrial derv is set to end soon too, and tax advantages ate now gone. I give it 10 years fpr peeserved diesela put to play and tge likes of Snotrag and other kettles will need mpdofication to run bipmass fuelz no wonder Avocet was fixed up, and is almost mainline ready
