Dignam deliberately provoked Costigan to see if he could be trusted. (If it was a legit opening to look for a fight, Dignam would have fought back, but he didn't.) He wasn't convinced by Costigan's simple swatting away of the coffee cup. He has to make sure and it's why he follows up with it "It's wasn't a joke, just because you play a tough guy, doesn't mean you are you lace-curtain irish pussy" It's to see if he's in the whole thing as a real cop or just somebody trying to look like a cop. The punch and genuine intent to hurt him, convinced Dignam. It revealed to him the genuine stress Costigan was under. It's why after Costigan hits him and they're in the car, where he reveals that they think there's a rat in the investigation unit. Nobody else was privy to that information except Dignam and Queenan. It's probably the most sincere and honest Dignam is in the whole movie and shows he trusts Costigan.

Let's remember too when Sullivan tried to put the blame for Queenan's death on Costigan. Dignam denied the accusation vehemently. He knew Billy would never have turned on Queenan like that and that Billy was a good man through and through. And in the end, he avenges both their deaths.

@RevolutionaryLoser

I think the character of Dingham really ties the whole movie together. To defeat Costello he's completely adopted the persona of an absolute piece of shit. He's turned himself into the kind of monster he wanted to destroy. When the farce is finally up, he drops all pretenses and executes Sullivan in cold blood just to get some justice for his partners. Beneath the mask he was actually a good, loyal man. His arc perfectly closes a story about the struggle between truth and deception.

Billy Costigan is one heartbreaking character. Most of Scorsese protagonists are not Immaculate people, but Billy is genuinely a good person. All he wanted to do is escape the cycle of crime and violence in his family by making something out of his life. He was raised by a blue-collar dad with mob ties, and a mother from an upscale family, who would not accept him and his dad. When he was orphaned, all he wanted to do to was be a good police officer. What he has to do to earn validation is both harrowing, depressing and truly tragic. He can't even catch a break. Nobody has his back. He is exploited by the criminals he has to infiltrate, and the police he has to work for. I could not even figure who to hate more. Dignam could not even appreciate how Billy is risking his life everyday for them. On top of it, he just has to deliberately be an asshole. To be fair with Dignam though, at least he does avenge Billy later on

Dicaprio is excellent in this, the way his character smoulders with anger and implied depth. This should've earned him a nomination rather than Blood Diamond.

It’s interesting how the captain asks his agent to keep doing his manly courageous work by calling him “kid” with affection.

Dignam being the smartest character in this entire movie. He could see through all the bs in every person he talked to. He never took shit from anybody.

I mean what BS was Billy putting here? He was just stressed and under a ton of pressure. Dignman was just an asshole

Honestly, It was nice to see Billy (Leo) punch Dingman (Mark). Mark Wahlberg played an a--hole though he did shoot Damon.

It's crazy how Costigan really was a nobody until the moment he went belly up.
