I totally agree. I think this episode was a great representation of the heart of Michael’s character. Michael sees his co workers as his family until he has his own. A little foreshadowing to the “Goodbye, Michael” episode where Michael has a monologue in which he says, “ Holly is my family now. At the end of the day, your coworkers are just your very best friends”. That monologue encapsulates the growth of his character where now he is able to move on and actually start his life. That is why I think David’s words were so important to him,at the time. David showing Michael that he respects him as a person was more impactful to Michael than what he thinks about him professionally. The only thing that would keep this episode out of my top 10 episodes of all time would be the B plot. The more serious nature of the main plot was not balanced very well with the ping pong plot which felt like not very well conceived filler.

The whole world deserved a copy of Micheal's diary during Covid-19 lockdown. I would totally read this and buy this. Plus Toby laughing was such a highlight. Michael's loyalty was to the company and not to his girlfriend Jan. Dunder Mifflin was his family before he gave it for Holly and their four children left in Boulder, Colorado. "You expect to get screwed by your company but you never expect to get screwed by your girlfriend." Micheal Scott. You'll never find your Holly if you never move past your Jan.

So the main plot line contains some of my favorite Michael moments ever, most of which you discussed in the review. His maddeningly obtuse use of language reminds me of the description of Zaphod Beeblebrox in "Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy": it's hard to tell when he's pretending to be stupid in order to defuse an argument, when he's pretending to be extraordinarily stupid in order to get out of a tight spot, and when he's really being genuinely stupid. I think we see examples of all three in the deposition. Moments like saying "Eyeshh" for "Yes" in a formal legal setting, and actually writing "Hee hee" in his diary, are classic Michael bits that are completely in line with the character that's been established since the middle of the first season, which I call the "loveable jerkass". But it's the exchange with Toby that really stands out for me. Here's how I see that scene: after who knows how many years of hostility from Michael, Toby finally sees an opportunity to find some common ground with him, and hopes to humanize himself in Michael's eyes. He opens himself up and shares a piece of his own emotional vulnerability, hoping that Michael will relate to it and begin to see Toby as someone he can relate to on an equal level. But Michael is having none of it, and pushes Toby away both metaphorically and literally. In that moment we go back to the "total jerkass" character of Michael that the series began with. The show wouldn't work if Michael were like that all the time, but for this one exchange, it serves to show why the relationship between Michael and Toby is never going to change. And when Michael tells David Wallace that "I think you're a nice guy too", that illustrates the core of his character. His coworkers, to him, are his friends and family, and he will put his work relationships above any other bonds in his life. Dysfunctional? Of course it is, but that is how Michael Scott is Michael Scott. Well, I've said a lot for a guy who's not the vlogger. ;) Hope it was some food for thought!

I've got a lot of thoughts about this episode. Despite having disagreed with your rating of the previous one, I agree that "The Deposition" deserves that 5/5. If it hadn't been overshadowed by "The Dinner Party", I would have considered it the best episode of the season. Funny thing about the different parts of this episode. The cold opening, the main plotline, and the ping-pong B plot all made strong impressions on me, but if I don't watch this for a while, I forget that they all took place in the same show! The opening is just cute, with Pam's little routine that makes Michael feel important. The conversation with Ryan is the *good* kind of Michael Scott cringe humor, and the final "Hi buddy!" made me laugh out loud the first time I saw the episode. The "Ping Pong Plot" was clearly a showcase for Kelly and Dwight, with Darryl and Jim just along for the ride. And Pam... well, therein lies the flaw of this subplot. I agree with you that Pam seems out of character here, but on the other hand, I'm not sure what would have been in character for her. In my fantasy version of the exchange, Pam would have poker-faced all of Kelly's trash talk, not showing any reaction, and leaving Kelly totally baffled. But that would have defeated the purpose of the B-plot, and frankly that would probably also have been out of character for Pam. So I'm curious as to what other ideas people may have. What would have been a more "Pam-like" reaction, that still would have allowed for a funny plot line and a ping-pong match?

Why does Michael have issues with Toby being divorced, but not with Daryl, Meredith or even Jan. On the surface his issue with Toby seems divorce minded, but there has too be a deeper issue.
@Mulverine
3 жыл бұрын
The theory is that Michael projects a lot of his angst about his parent's divorce on Toby, because Toby is somewhat of an authority figure (works for corporate and can put a dampener on what Michael wants to do), but also because Toby was a child of divorce and yet still went through a divorce. Jan's divorce was simply opportunity for Michael! 😂 And I'll have to think about Darryl and Meredith.
