Thanks for the video! Before design thinking begins, how do you know what you’ll be starting with? Where does the idea come from? Is it an assumption from the company? Is it because one customer/client had an issue with something and the company said hey let’s make a product out of that?

Hey! It all depends on where you’re working and the kind of context in which you want to apply design thinking. It can be used as a way to come up with new product ideas, but it’s also useful for solving any kind of problem or challenge, and doesn’t necessarily have to result in something tangible. For example, if you worked in HR, you might learn from a staff survey that employees are unhappy with how meetings are currently run. That’s your challenge: How can we improve the way meetings are run? How can we make meetings more engaging and effective? Then you’d go through each of the stages, empathising with your users (i.e. employees), defining a concrete objective (i.e. make meetings more engaging), coming up with ideas, and testing them. It’s also important to remember that it’s not a linear process, and you could come in at any of the five stages. Perhaps you’ve already got a product and you start by testing it. Then, based on the feedback you get, you might loop back to the ideation phase to come up with ideas for improvements. In many ways, design thinking is a mindset-it’s about solving challenges in a way that keeps the user at the forefront. These problems and challenges can come from anywhere-the HR survey example is just one possible scenario. You might just want to find ways to boost your email subscribers, or get more Instagram followers, or improve the learning experience for students in your classroom. It can feel very abstract until you put it into practice, so it’s worth reading some case studies to see how it’s applied in the real world. We’ve included two interesting design thinking case studies in our design thinking guide: careerfoundry.com/en/blog/ux-design/what-is-design-thinking-everything-you-need-to-know-to-get-started/ Hope that helps to answer your question!

Hello, I am a Careerfoundry graduate and I just saw this video and the information you have pointed out in the link, but I am confused about something. Can you please help me understand the difference between The 8 Design Thinking stages: Understand, Observe, POV, Ideate, Prototype, Test, Tell Story, Present, and The 5 Design Thinking stages: Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test. I am a bit confused and would be happy if you can clarify this for me.
