Imagine that on your 30th birthday that you have never heard the words "I love you" from another human being! Karen was multi-talented, beautiful, sweet, and grounded. Her talent made many people rich and successful. She was overlooked by her mother and overworked by her brother and management. All potential boyfriends were blocked by mom and A&M. The media criticized her looks and their music. Karen's disease caused her to be terrified of the plate of food in front of her, and to take medicine that was deadly for her. Despite all of this Karen simply yearned for a true love, and children of her own. She always cared about their fans and was loved by her many friends. To the end she wanted new songs to sing and audiences to sing to. Karen was courageous all her life, always stepping out front, even though she remained very shy. I love Karen Carpenter and I hope you do too. RIP Drummergirl

Her mother and brother drove her to her grave. Her mother was very cold and distant and her brother was so controlling. On the eve of her wedding finding out your future husband got a vasectomy when she was really wanting children. Karen did have several affairs over the years. None long lasting. She was "protected" by A&M and her family. Image is everything, you know. She had certain requirements, one of which was wealth. Unfortunately, she never adequately vetted Tom Burris to find out his wealth was all borrowed or leased. He was a flim flam man: looked good, big smile, no money.

I had a cousin, an Air Force veteran, who died of anorexia in January 1981. It had a name, but trying to help anyone with it was nearly impossible. He was always a small guy, but when he died he weighed only 75 pounds. His bones, including the sternum and spine, actually stuck out so far you felt as if you could place a cup of coffee on them. Whenever we asked him if he thought he was too thin he would either say No or Just right. He wasa couple of weeks from age 32.

I am so sorry to hear about this. The brain is a powerful thing and when it convinces you to keep starving yourself.. you are literally battling yourself.. it’s like an addiction and telling people to simply quit. It’s not that easy if it were people wouldn’t die from eating disorders. It’s a mental disorder and it happens when you feel like your life is out of control, the brain will go after what it can control and that’s your appetite.. I have battled this beast most of my life and it’s so hard sometimes.. but you have to be willing to get help and pray it’s not coming too late when it has done damage to your organs. Karen was trying to recover but for her the damage was already done and she died of heart failure and cardiac arrest.. it’s tragic what happened to her and your cousin.. I pray that we remove the stigma from this and educate the public about this disease works:.

IMO her mother was very abusive, psychologically and emotionally. Richard, not only enabled his mother, he contributed. IMO he was extremely jealous of her, success. As he was always told he would be a star. I agree he is in-fact gifted in his own right. Her mother since chid hood told her she was fat. As a woman myself, with an abusive mother, what many do not realize, including therapists, is that the damage and therefore rejection of a mother to a female .( I can not speak for a male. However I witnessed how it effected my brother, this created in me an extreme anger. ) It is soul shattering. It runs deeper than most except. And even fewer understand. It is a pain that IMO can not be explained . An instance in life that unless personally experienced is not understood. I’m not saying that portions of the damage are not understandable, I’m saying that some portions of it rarely occur to most in life and really are virtually impossible to explain. Whether told you’re fat or not, and unfortunately Karen focused on this in an attempt at pleasing her mother, and hoping to at least in this area gain acceptance. As her success and God given talent was seen in scorn, as it out shined Richard. Anorexia, &, other conditions work in tandem with these disorders.Anorexia, despite specialists in this field ( Karen had a great one. Ahead of his time, really.), has a long way to go. It’s incredibly complex & although Karen’s attempt at acceptance is merely one aspect of this incredibly complex disorder. Despite popular thoughts and theory it effects individual’s differently . The disorder is as individual as the person who suffers from it. Blessings to all. And thank you for taking the time to read this. Anorexia is also something I shared with Karen. I hope this sheds some light on this disorder.

Her autopsy said nothing about a thinning heart muscle. It said her heart was normal. There was no emetine found in her blood. Usage of ipecac was in the past. She was within a normal weight range at 5'4" , 108 lbs. The key was her blood sugar at 1110. Enough to kill most anyone. Diagnosed or undiagnosed, she had to have untreated diabetes. It seems amazing they never analyzed the contents of her stomach during the autopsy to see if what was consumed could have contributed to her deadly blood sugar spike.
@billparthum206
2 жыл бұрын
@Carlos Delsulcé Without knowing precisely the timeframe, frequency, amount used, etc., you cannot say in any scientific way that she succumbed to emetine cardiotoxicity. Especially as regards her heart's condition appearing normal. That would be pure speculation and more for support of some cause, be it anorexia or bulimia. What you CAN scientifically say is a blood glucose level of 1110 is fatal. Most people pass out in the 550-650 range. That is what she had. That is what the hospital listed as cause of death. No one is saying she did not have battles with anorexia and/or bulimia. She did. But it was her uncontrolled glucose that killed her. The questions no one wants to pursue are when did she develop this condition, was it diagnosed or undiagnosed, was treatment prescribed or not, and if prescribed did she follow it or not? After almost 40 years it's time we got the true answers, including why Tom Burris was paid off to never say a thing about his wife. That in itself is incredible.

@@janyceboschman3122 No doubt. The poor woman suffered from several conditions. @billparthum206
7 ай бұрын
@A51502 Sorry, but I missed your post. I believe it came as a result of one of two possible scenarios. The first is that during her last hospital stay she might have been over pumped with glucose to expedite her weight gain. This may have possibly caused interruption in her body's sugar processing, leading to problems that were aggravated after discharge. We do not know what kind or how many, if any, follow up exams Karen had after her discharge in which her blood sugar would/should have been checked. Another scenario is more nefarious. She may have been injecting herself with a substance which could have affected her blood sugar or might have received a direct glucose injection. Remember, her autopsy report cited numerous needle marks bilaterally on either side of her groin area. The autopsy fails to mention the pattern of the marks, which may have been indicative that she had been exposed to, and had been using, some sort of injectable drug or pharmaceutical. Could someone have replaced what she thought was her usual with a glucose dose of significant strength to terminate her prior to her divorce being signed? It's all just speculation, of course, but far wilder scenarios are seen on tv every week. And cocaine was quite popular at the time, is known to raise blood sugar levels, and could be injected to avoid any visible signs of usage. All speculation, of course.

Yes I do believe she would have gotten better with professional help. In my early teens I developed anorexia and bulimia. I barely ate and would use laxatives if I dared go over 110 lbs. Most days I would just drink milk so at least my body would have something because it's been called natures most perfect food. One of my teachers pulled me aside and said get help or she's gonna get it for me. Strangely enough she was my nutrition teacher and she saved my life. I got 100% in her class because of my obsession to stay thin. My nickname was Twiggy and I was a model as well. I'm now 57 and still struggle but not like when I was younger. I lost bone density because of it. It's never something that just goes away. It's a life long struggle. I grew up in severe abuse and developed body dysmorphic disorder. I cried when Karen died especially because that's around the time my teacher called attention to it. Thank you for posting this video.

Actually, Karen was like her mom and Richard was laid back like his dad. If you read that stuff carefully you'll see the cover up by those trying to push that 'did not love' stuff. I knew Karen and I know she never felt unloved by her mom, dad or her brother. If Karen ever had problems, it was always her mom, dad and brother that helped her out. Mom and Richard were the ones that suggested therapy to Karen yet each time Karen went to therapy they kept trying to convince Karen that her family didn't care about her when it was her mom and Richard that were the ones that cared enough about Karen to ask her to get help. That stuff is such a smoke screen by therapists and such. Karen and her mom were actually very close and they had many secrets between themselves. But how would you feel if you were asked by your family to get help from therapy and then they tried to tell you that your family didn't care about you when your family was the only reason you were even there? It was and still is just a huge mess. To answer another part, if you notice, they never say that Agnes ever said she 'loved' Richard either. Agnes was raised with the word love to mean making love and the word caring to mean caring. Keep looking, you won't ever find where anyone ever said Agnes said she loved Richard either. Richard was 'the favorite' as Karen didn't want to be praised or pampered or such (nor did Richard either, but it was their mom and always respect your elders and your family). They never asked Agnes if she cared about her kids, only if she loved Karen. Agnes could talk for hours about how proud she was of both Richard and Karen and how she cared about them but Agnes could say she loved her husband with all her heart but couldn't bring herself to say she loved her kids for some reason. And that reason is? And they never asked Agnes if she cared about Karen only if she loved Karen. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts Mike. Unless people share information, how are we going to know what is on each others' minds.

Karen Carpenter was definitely a beautiful and talented young lady. I definitely think if she were here today, the odds of her surviving would be much higher. I still have trouble watching interviews of her family, always matter of factly speaking of Karen’s death......never really seemed emotional.....always, they did everything they could and that was that. Any interviews of friends, always ask, what one more thing could I have done or said.....that’s natural right. I never heard her family ever say that......when do you decide enough help is enough. I know everyone loved Karen, but I truly believe she was let down by sooo many in her life......one of their last videos of “Touch me when were dancing”, she looked so weak and frail, in her eyes, Karen was different....but there’s Richard, sitting at the piano with the biggest smile on his face. Karen was so alone, I imagine how painful and alone she must have felt, physically and emotionally. If I was her sister, I definitely would have held her hand, every step of the way, until we found the help that was right for her. I would have never let go of her hand....ever. Karen is forever frozen in time, so young....she was always beautiful, genuine, loving and always thought of everyone else. A special talent of making you feel the love. It Is heart-breaking how unloved she was by her mother, overworked by her brother, and seemingly overlooked lao by her father. From personal experience with anorexia, they needed to treat the reasoning behind her wanting to be invisible and not just have her gain weight. Losing weight and wanting to be extremely thin isn’t about wanting to be skinny, it’s about wanting control when you feel the things that are underlying hurting you are out of your control. 35 years I’ve battled and although I’m recovered, I still have days where I still struggle. I have to have the willpower to fight for your right of life and keep moving forward.

Absolutely spot on. And the 'treatment' people (usually women) get these days STILL focuses on food, calories, etc., and far too little on the background to the situation that started the condition. The 'last taboo' in society seems to be that some mothers can be dangerous, useless, or both, to their children. Anorexia sufferers have to put up with it all - no wonder some try to get some control over their lives through food.

Exactly. Anorexia is a psychological disorder that presents itself as a physical condition. It’s definitely NOT about food. It’s about control, or lack thereof. The more you talk about food with an anorexic, the worse it gets.

Anorexia Nervosa has been around longer than the 1980’s. It was in one of my great Aunts nursing book. It literally means nervous loss of appetite. Which means people with it usually have an underlying problem along with it like : not getting along with family, being sexually abused, etc.. I had both diseases but I was lucky to get help in college. AND there is always interest in POUNDS. Muscle weighs more but makes you smaller because it is dense. I think all people suffering must take psychological paths with the entire family entering as one unit and all going to therapy together. That is all.

I've always tried to sympathize with the mother as just being misunderstood. She reminds me of the mother from the movie "Ordinary People." Maybe her coldness was a defense mechanism? The Dad is hardly ever mentioned and there seemed to have been lots of denial taking place within that family dynamic.

I find it ironic that you'd mistake Karen's mother's name as "Gladys" when "Gladys Kravitz" was the annoying, snooping busybody from, "Bewitched" and people today call women like her "Karens"--- when we should call them, "Gladys-es." There are so many wonderful women named, "Karen" it's a shame someone used that name to describe a negative stereotype of complaining women and it took on a life of its own. No one names their baby daughters "Gladys" anymore, so we should just use that name instead of "Karen" if we want to label such people.

I grew up listening to them, and I always thought her voice had a tinge of sadness to it. Her voice was a bit unique and beautiful, and I really loved pretty much all the mainstream music of theirs on the radio. I was a bit too young to go buy records, but this video reminded me I haven't heard a Carpenter song in at least 10 years. It's sad anorexia/bulimia didn't have a diagnosis at the time she was suffering. Had there been, perhaps she'd still be here with us. A beautiful voice silenced much too young.

I had two cousins who were anorexic and die from a heart attack in their thirties. Two very different sides of families yet they had twins and were so worried about their bodies. They essentially starved themselves afterward. It’s sad. It’s truly a disease that isn’t talked about enough. Funny too none of their songs were originals.

I adored Karen Carpenter. I belive with all of my heart that I had anorexia in the early seventies before I'd ever heard of it. I was raised with 5 older brothers & especially when I was a young teen they were very controlling. No matter where I went at least one would show up & physically making me get in the car & go home. Moma never got onto them because she was glad they did what they did. So then ,, still a young teen of 16 got married to a boy I thought was THE ONE who turned out to be a momas boy & no one could compare to her,,which i never did,,, I adored her & her me & I learned SO VERY MUCH FROM HER than any of her family could imagine. However her baby boy turned out to be very abusive. I HAD to get out. Ill always remember the day I was sitting in the kitchen weighing 98 lbs. At 5/7 and my mom said its time for to get out girl or you're gonna die. Only one brother had ever divorced. I felt like such a failure in life. People tried & tried to get me to eat but by this time its like you've got a knot in the pit of your stomach. In the back of my mind I couldn't get over the fact that I was damaged goods & I'd never be good enough for anything. I went into deep,dark depression. I saw Karen's movie & it ALL CLICKED IN TO MY HEAD AND I WAS SO relieved just to know why I was feeling like I was. I knew I had some work to do. But I had a place to start.We couldn't afford a councilor so I Read everything I could get my hands on. I went to the Dr. Where he put me on some medications. He put me on some medication. And slowly I began to heal. It took me along time to love me. He got mad one morning & as usual he took it out on me..We lived in a small trailer. Straight across from the bed was the door. He threw me on the bed and started choking me. I'll never forget the evil look on his face . I knew he meant to kill me. I talked him into letting me up. I begged. I pleaded. He'd let up,then start again. Finally I ended up in a position to get my legs up & I kicked him so hard in his mid section he happened be right in front of the door that he flew out of the door & right into my brother. Then he got him. He slapped him a few times & told him to hit the road & never ever come back which he did. Please keep an eye on your heart .Love hard & Love Well !!! JUST LOVE!!!

Thanks for sharing your story Janice. Unfortunately those movies and such aren't very accurate and usually try to follow that anorexic profile based on Cherry Boone and her "Starving for Attention" book. Karen and her mom were actually a lot alike and Richard and his dad were a lot alike too. Karen and Richard always got along and always worked together as equals in their own ways. Richard knew all the musical stuff and Karen had a way to blend that music with her voice. They were always a team. As far as those movies, Agnes (mom) was not one that tolerated spoiled brats and temper tantrums and such. If Karen or Richard had ever thrown a fit like in those movies and such around their mom, they had better pack up and get out. Karen told me that her and her mom would always talk together and any time Karen had a problem, Karen said her mom would always sit at the kitchen table with Karen and they would talk about it. NO YELLING, just talk. I also saw where most of the time, the family let Karen have her space if she wanted, but if Karen ever had anyone giving her problems or such, her family was always there if she needed them. I never saw any control with Karen's family over Karen, but I do know a few (Levenkron, Phil, Itchie, Tom Burris, Max, others non family) that had tried to control Karen but Karen was too used to working together with others and was actually very uncomfortable around "control freaks" so to speak. Karen said her mom could be a bit overprotective at times, but her mom nor her brother ever tried to control her. Karen was a tomboy like her mom and tomboys need their space and need to be wild and free. But being too wild and free can lead to some problems at times too. Karen and Richard also had a rule about not talking about stuff that could be seen as being negative in public. That was actually why Karen didn't talk publicly about her anorexia or her treatment. It was a big mess and Karen didn't really have anything positive to say about anorexia or her failed attempts at trying to get help, so Karen avoided it publicly. Richard did have some positive things about his addiction problem, but for Karen, it was just a bunch of negatives on her anorexia.

Thank you Adrian Dow for telling the truth about Karen & her family. Maybe it was her handlers, maybe it was from them ,or her one husband. It could've been from her own mind,,,watching all of the other stars who starve themselves to death. Karen wasn't the only one who ever got told they might need to lose weight. That was the Twiggy days,,,all of us that could be were skinny. I was just always so overwhelmed by life ,,, I just got to the point where I didn't feel hungry. Then I couldn't eat enough to keep a bird alive. So sorry for going on about me. We were many. Some like Karen didn't get through it.

Yes, I think Karen Carpenter could have benefited from early treatment and psychotherapy for her anorexia. Not only that, but she had a rather strict and abusive mother. Plus, her brother Richard pressured her a lot to stay on schedule while touring. Had she had been treated earlier, Karen might still be with us. She was a terrific singer and drum player. Rest in peace Karen, and I hope to meet you in the afterlife.

Not judging but never finding love with all those men, I have to wonder if she was high maintenance?
@adriandowningiii8395
3 жыл бұрын
@@pastelskies8466 Nope, not high maintenance, but Karen had a LONG list of qualifications for her ideal man that even Jesus Christ couldn't have fulfilled that list from what I heard. The legend I heard was that Karen had come up with a list of over 50 things she was looking for and looking to avoid in a guy and from that list she narrowed it down to about 15 I think it was. She had met one guy that met all but two of those (and was borderline on the one). But he was younger than her (so he wasn't as established but he did have a credit score of 726 which was higher than Tom and his son's combined 636) which were the two he was lacking being older and financially secure (that 726 credit score though so not a financial mess, just not established yet). As far as the age issue, those that saw Karen and this guy together thought the guy was usually a year or two older than Karen, so his age was younger, but people wouldn't notice unless they asked. Usually after they asked, they would think Karen was joking. Karen did look a lot younger around this guy, most would think he was about 26 or so and that Karen looked to be around 23 or 24 even though Karen had just passed 30 at the time. Karen and Richard were both very picky about the kind of person they wanted. Karen and Richard were always used to being each other's best friends so it would get a bit awkward dating-wise as anyone would start realizing that with Karen or Richard, you were kind of dating half a person. Richard and Karen had been around each other so much that they were used to knowing what each other was thinking and not having to talk about it.

I think Karen Carpenter had the most beautiful voice💐💐 and she was an outstanding drummer💐💐🥁🥁! It is sad that her mother was so cold, Karen Carpenter never found a man that loved her, and that there was so much pressure on her to be thin by the day and age of Twiggy. However, I wonder if Karen Carpenter was allowed to see a Cardiologist if that would have helped her to stay alive? Doctors should have realized with Anorexia or Bulimia you have to also think of the physical consequences of the diseases that need to be treated, not just the psychological causes. Of course I'm not sure what the medical care for a heart condition was like in 1983 either. Although I have absolutely respect for Karen Carpenter because I believe that she was deep down a good person, who had a really good sense of humor with a fun loving spirit, and had she had a good heart, I'm wondering how she was able to get a hold of Thyroxine? Thyroxine is a thyroid medication and if you take it and don't need it that alone could give someone a heart attack even if they never starved themselves or induced vomiting. However, I 🙏🙏🌹🌹hope and pray that Karen Carpenter is in Heaven now🙏🙏 🌹🌹and she has found a man in Heaven that loves her and that God loves them both!! In this comment, I don't want any judgment towards Karen Carpenter, I'm just wondering if there was more that could have been done for her and how things happened the way they did! I would never want to say anything that would upset her brother Richard Carpenter or that would defame Karen Carpenter in any way because I have absolute respect for her and if I had met her when I was a child I think that I would have liked her as a person too🧸🧸🌹🌹!!.
