Behold! The most comprehensive journalistic piece on Brotherhood of Steel ever made just a few days before its 20th anniversary! Huge thanks to Fin(for being one of the only people to have researched BOS’s cut content and inspiring me to look into it), Analog(for being one of of the few people to have researched its development) and No Bark(for help with renderdoc) from the Independent Wiki for help with this one, as well as RockWithAMedicineCup(for help with extracting text files in an easily readable format) from my discord and Kran(for help with cracking the Xbox rom) from the Van Buren Engine Research Project! This video ended up being a massive undertaking due to how little of its prerelease information was preserved and that very little of the game had been datamined before. Some of the information and images in this video haven't been seen in decades or ever outside of the dev team. There are a few elements that I didn't get to include, particularly cut NPC conversations, but overall I'm happy with how much I could cover given the very limited resources available to me. Unfortunately BOS uses a different, unknown file structure than other Snowblind Engine games and the likelihood of it being reverse engineered is low considering the game’s reputation. It still has so many mysteries because we can't play the in-engine cutscenes, look at textures that don't get loaded into memory, check out of bounds areas, discover the scripting purpose for invisible NPCs, load unused levels or creatures, check animations, etc. Perhaps I'll make another video on it if it ever gets cracked. Also there is an oversight where I mention there's only 6 unique Pipboy images in game! There's actually a 7th Grim Reaper variant shown in this video at 6:18 as well :)

For me, Im not even upset that BOS wasn't an RPG. I'm more upset that they removed every bit of world building from the games just to add in lower tier versions of it. I think part of the reason why sexuality in Fallout 1/2 was less controversal was the restricted graphics, so things were only as explicit as the player imagined them to be. And could be taken as humour. Yeah I'm pretty sure some horny guy cranked his hog to the game at one point, but by in large it was mostly meant for humour. BoS wanted to shift copies based on its sexual content and it shows.

If I was a Fallout fan back then it definitely would feel like a slap in the face not just for Fallout fans but also for Console gamers. The thought that Fallout was too mature for console gaming is just, pretentious and feels wrong. To think that the only way for Fallout to be successful on console was to dumb it down just sounds like they think that Console players were not mature enough for Fallout. I know it was 2004, and Halo 2 was the big game back then, but that doesn't mean you need Fallout to go down to an "Acceptable level" for console players. That doesn't mean that you should try and harass the devs and give them death threats though. That is never acceptable behavior, not even for something like BOS. It also doesn't mean Halo 2 is a bad game, It's actually one of my favorite games, and even has something to say beyond kill aliens and save Earth, but I was just trying to make an example of what games were coming out in 2004 and what people got out of it back then, which was that you were saving earth as a super soldier with some Numetal in the background. Don't blame the devs for the dumbing down of BOS, blame Interplay for thinking that console players couldn't handle Fallout's themes and writing.

I absolutely love this game. I used to read the site Duck and Cover back then and the stupid, histrionics about it being a "console game" made me leave such bullshit behind. I don't care one bit about whether it's within lore or not, as all I care about is the game, and it plays fine. I love all the games on the Snowblind engine, but this is the one I play the most.

Honestly, I love it a lot. It was a great effort to bring fallout to the console market. Then fo3 came out and actually did the things BoS wanted to do. I actually really like how much of the DNA of BoS came to fo3, like good boy brotherhood, working with slavers to take out mutants, things like that. I wish tod Howard had already bought fallout, since a lot of the better ideas and people working on a true fallout 3 for the ps2 and xbox would have been amazing. Then again, I just don't really jive with the crappy first 2 games. They always felt like they were unfinished

Management that doesn't understand the fanbase and what sells and doing what sells and is sexy has been so prevalent in the industry for decades. We saw it with interplay and Titus, ea, embracer, Activision and so so so many others. It genuinely feels like the lessons are never learned and it's a cruel cycle that causes so much unwanted shit to happen. I continuously mix up tactics and b.o.s but I'll say this out of the two I prefer tactics by a landslide. Thanks for joining my Ted talk

I liked it fun to play with a friend, it's challenging and it's not a direct sequel, just a spin-off so I can forgive it. I like the Snowblind engine games, all of them even that crappy DnD Xbox game.

Brotherhood of steel is what happens when you let executives make a game instead of the actual devs. Its basically why many games these days feel so bad. Were getting this level of trash but you dont instantly recognize it as trash cause its wrapped in pretty graphics

This video only proves that NMA and Codex are hypocrites since they all hates fallout 2 on release and were crying for Wasteland 2. Brotherhood and Tactics had is issues? yes but they tried something new

A the very least BOS's lore isn't forgotten. I believe it's used, albeit slightly altered, in Old World Blues, the Fallout mod for Hearts of Iron IV.
