Philippe Callens (1962-2021), the renowned and beloved country dance choreographer, teacher, and dancer, was from Antwerp, the great Belgium diamond center. For many in the world of country dancing, he was the city's true gem. Many of his dance creations were written to honor friends and acquaintances far and wide, including Mr Ross's Dance, or, The Second Man, which he dedicated to me. When I heard the tune A Stroll in Mayfair by Roger Davidson, The Diamond of Antwerp was the result. It was my way of returning the favor with something that I hope he would have approved of. There are echoes of Fried Herman and Philippe in the choreography, which I realized only after sketching out the dance's narrative.
My thanks to CDSS for publishing this dance in its Fall 2022 online edition and to Karen Axelrod for providing live music for the test drive of the dance at the 2022 New London Assembly. The intro music in the video is by the composer himself, Roger Davidson.

(Apologies for the poor production values in this clip. The lighting was a challenge for the camera, and its mic didn't pick up the audio very well. But hopefully, given Karen's fine playing and the lively dancing by the participants, the dance comes through sufficiently to inspire others to try it.--pbr)
