Group homes were the alternative. You know, the places where asylum patients were sent after the asylums were closed. There's no fairytale solution to this problem. Ppl just don't like the stereotypical idea the word "asylum" tends to bring up. But long term care for any kind of patient tends to just be a hassle financially and emotionally for all parties involved.

My heart broke when his mom had fallen on the floor and he did nothing. So many caregivers suffer abuse at the hands of disabled adults, and it isn't talked about nearly as much as it should be. They're backed into a corner where they can't win. When you're a caregiver for people like him, either you're letting the person continue to abuse you, or you're endangering a vulnerable adult if you leave them. It's an absolutely hellish situation that nobody deserves to be in. There was a woman in my state who worked for an organization that owned group homes for disabled adults. Long story short, one day, she was the only person on staff at her house (which, for safety reasons, should NEVER happen), and she was attacked by one of her clients. He beat her so severely that she ended up in the E.R. At one point, she told him that there would be consequences for his behavior. His response was, "I don't care. And nobody else will, either. They'll just blame it on my syndrome." You know what? He's right. That's the saddest part of it. There are individuals like him, who may deal with violent behavioral issues, but are high functioning enough to know full well what they can get away with. And it's costing people their safety, and quite possibly even their lives. Our system has failed these people.

As an autistic person, when there is a loud noise that affects my sensory issues, I tend to do one of three things; try to get it to stop, and if that’s not possible (like with fireworks or passing trains) I either cover my ears (I got earplugs on hand for this specific purpose) or try to get away from whatever’s making the noise. What I don’t do is stand closer to what’s making the sound and refuse to leave. Also as a note, some autistic people do enjoy concerts, so this guy getting annoyed with loud music but still enjoying rock music is not COMPLETELY impossible, but I do think he’s exaggerating his sensory issues to because he’s not trying to get away from the source of the thing that’s causing him pain.

Former mental health worker here, I have seen a lot of patients similar to Andrew. There are a few different reasons why somebody behaves like this. One of the saddest examples I ever dealt with was a man with schizophrenia who was convinced that his family were trying to poison his food so they could steal his money. The family were lovely and cared so deeply for him, especially the mother, who pushed for better community mental health services and put her own money into helping start the centre I worked in. I'm not making excuses for Andy, he seems to know what he's doing but please remember that's not always the case.

There's this element of obsession with authority figures he has that defines the whole thing, one the one hand it's him, on the other hand this is a complicated "system accident" in which he was overexposed to inconsistent authority figures. @Flippylover_69

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Infantilizing disabled folks has a lot of consequences, this is only one of them. Disabled people (especially autistic people, the group Andrew claims to be a part of) consistently ask non disabled people NOT to infantilize them as well, so there’s that. Some disabled people do require special care, and that’s valid, but I don’t think we as a society should treat otherwise perfectly functional disabled folks the same way we treat those with more serious impairments.
@sarahr9894

While he may not be diagnosed with autism, there is clearly something wrong with him to the point of disabling him. I don't think it's autism. I think it's some sort of personality disorder + narcissism + learned behaviours to get what he wants. Either way he's non-functional. He absolutely needs to be in a facility that can help him learn better coping skills. I think it could be possible, he's just learned ways to get what he wants from his parents/local law enforcement and is exploiting it. That doesn't mean he's not also mentally ill and disabled.

Old fashioned asylums never left, but the people who get institutionalized are usually under some kind of legal guardianship or conservatorship that allows their family to perpetually keep them abused and locked up. I dated a woman who worked as a software engineer in her 20s and suffered a mental break in her late 20s, her family paid for a lawyer to put her under a conservatorship and for the entire time we were dating she was trapped in a cycle of trying to break herself out of it and her family painting her as being deragned and mentally unstable, getting her institutionalised, and then she'd be released and like "actually I understand why they need to use my money, I'm not stable as I am right now" and it was extremely depressing. We broke up and I don't know how she's doing now, but I can say for a fact that people can be held against their will, it's just only easy to hold them if you have the money to LEGALLY justify why you want it done, even if you can't logically or morally justify it, all that's needed is a lawyer willing to go along with your shit for money. I guess what I'm saying is, the system has all the tools to lock up the actual crazies, it's just been broken and now is only used by lawyers.

My favorite video from Andy is the one from last Halloween where him and his family were sitting on the front porch passing out candy to kids. A few kids refused to take candy from Andy due to their parents telling them about the time Andy poisoned his parents, he really is a modern take of the 'vilalge idiot'.
@pinkdiamond1847

We had a neighbourhood witch. Basically there was a rumour made up about some random old lady for some reason that she was a witch and every Halloween we avoided our house because we had stories that she put curses on children or poisoned them. To be fair to us children her house was very decrepit like falling apart and with plants growing all over and it was painted dark purple and It had those old style iron gates that were painted black. It basically looked like a stereotypical haunted house but looking back it was probably just some lonely old lady who couldn't take care of the place and I feel bad for her now looking back unlike Andy who might actually come from hell itself.

I find Andrew Ditch disturbing. Here's why: To claim you have brain damage is disturbing enough, when you can prove it is the worst part. I have brain damage and it's proven. It stems from a long bout with a disease called hydrocephalus and having had 3 surgeries to fix the problem.. I'm left with a lot of problems from it. I don't excuse any of my behavior because I have a wonky brain. I own up to my mistakes. As for what he does to his parents, I don't think he'll ever feel anything for that. If he hasn't when his mom fell those times, he won't ever feel anything.

I'm not defending him. I have a severe tbi from being shot in the head. Some brain injuries absolutely change your brain and make you act in ways you cannot always control. I just wanted to clarify that. Some brain injuries do affect how you act, talk and respond to different stimuli. I get overwhelmed easily. And sometimes get bout of irritability, completely out of my control. I have short term memory problems, out of my control. And I can blame my severe tbi for those things. Because they were not characteristic of me pre gunshot wound to the head and brain. I hope this makes sense. I don't know this man. And he scares me and I believe he needs 24/7 monitoring. Specifically in a mental institution.

I actually have both autism and scitzoeffective disorder. I was formally diagnosed with autism at a very early age, and was diagnosed with scitzoeffective disorder back in my mid twenties. I have a job, live on my own, and support myself despite the challenges my diagnosis brings. People like Andrew make people like me look really bad, because I garuntee you that people are gonna point to this guy, and say we're all like that. I've been through a lot of horrible things in my life, and have worked hard to rise above my condition, and be a man I can be proud of, and people like Andrew invalidate all of that hard work and struggle. He does a great disservice to us all.

@@deltasaves Thank you. When I was younger I used drugs and alcohol as a bandaid for my mental health issues, and not only did it not work, it exacerbated the issue. I eventually did get therapy and proper medications for my problems, and today I'm like a completely different person (for the better) I'm more optimistic, and proactive in my journey through life and volunteer in certain mental health groups to use my story to warn others of the dangers of ignoring your problems, and as inspiration to others to get help like I did.
