A nice video on metal die casting basic processes. Die casting is a good technique for producing precision metal components at medium and high quantities with short-turnaround times. Parts will have high precision, very good surface finish, can either have smooth or textured surfaces, and be repeatably produced. It can take weeks to make the mold which is not cheap, but once the mold is made, parts can be produced inexpensively and fast. So metal die casting is a technique good to be considered if you need the same parts repeatedly, over and over again in significant quantities as you deplete your stocks or even for one time production if quantities are large enough to justify die casting mold fees. Just been looking at Tesla's Giga Press and not sure how it works. It appears to have a huge press which just keeps the die closed but that doesn't makes sense - you could do that with much smaller clamps. The only real option is that the press is creating the pressure but surely that means it would have to be able to move slightly which would ruin tolerances. Can you explain?

The extreme pressure is used to inject the molten metal into the die, huge force is required to fill all the spaces. As you can imagine molten metal is more dificult to flow than our best known liquids.

I am not sure I understand where the force needed comes from though. I assume air is released and you aren't building up pressure from compressed air? If you aren't that makes sense. If you are though, assuming the metal could stay liquid forever, it should be able to flow into everything without much force, other than the weight of the metal itself. Is it because of the speed and volume needed of injection? Like 1 ton of metal pushed into lots of veins within a few seconds?
