Hi I'm Cheryl. This is Alicia. Hello! We're here from Peach & Lily. We are going to code the difference between toners, essences, serums, and ampoules today. You might not be familiar with it it's not super common in the American skincare routine but you might want to include this in yours!
A toner is really to be used to help balance your skin's Ph after cleansing and usually Korean toners are very hydrating and kick starts hydration after cleansing. An essence's main job is to hydrate the skin and really drench skin with that much-needed moisture. It comes with a lot of secondary benefits these days like brightening and plumping but the main job is to hydrate skin.
A serum is a skincare product that is concentrated with ingredients that really help you target various skin concerns, such as brightening, fighting acne, those deeply edge wrinkles and trying to iron those out, plumping out skin and so forth.
An ampoule is very similar to your serum in that it targets various skin care concerns that you may have but it is super packed, it is like a booster so it’s a little more intensive and action packed then a daily serum.
A toner is definitely important. Unlike other toners out there, Korean toners tend to be very gentle and hydrating. Usually, it does not include alcohol, it’s not like an astringent that strips your skin. Instead, it does the opposite, it really hydrates your skin. More importantly, it really balances your skin's PH. Even if you’re using a low PH cleanser, a lot of the water you use to rinse your cleansers off, could be, very high pH, very alkaline. Actually, one of the things that we heard a lot about is the 7 skin method coming out of Korea where you tap on lots of layers of toner.
What's the deal? Do you really need to do that? So definitely, you don't need to do that, but it's such a great hack to have. It went totally viral in Korea because it's sort of like getting a facial. When I give facials, basically, the whole goal is for my clients to be able to drink in really beneficial skincare ingredients, one layer at a time. Like a sponge being plumped up one layer at a time.
So doing that 7 layer method, all it really is, is you cleanse your skin, you apply a gentle toner directly to your skin like this. And you keep pressing it on? Yep! And you do that seven times. It's nomenclature, you can do it three times, you can do it fifteen times. Depending on what your skin needs. Exactly! So after toning, now, this is where it's different. In American skincare routines, you might go right into your moisturizer.
How do you decide what's next and why might you need that? Yeah, we get that question a lot. So, after toner, usually what comes next is your essence. Many of you might be wondering what's an essence? That's not something you see often in an American skincare routine.
The difference between a toner, an essence and a serum is that essences’, their main job is to hydrate your skin. Essences come very fancy these days. So, they're going to be brightening, plumping and all these other things. So, you're kind of picking it according to what your skin concern might be? Exactly! But the main job of an essence is to drench your skin with hydration. Whereas the main job of a toner, is to kick start hydration but really balance the Ph. Essences can be watery or more viscous like this Altoclassic one which uses Korean herbal ingredients and you just apply directly on skin and absorbs right in and soaks your skin with all of these great ingredients to keep it super hydrated...
