When the girls were returned to their parents, Emile began having grand mal seizures. The parents told them to keep it a secret. Epilepsy was a shameful thing back then, Emile had them all the time, until they went to their old nursery to "Boarding School" Their nasty father Oliva couldn't keep his hands off Marie and Emilie. He molested all of them at one time or another. Their mother hated Marie, calling her cross eyes all the time, she read their personal diaries and scolded them for writing about their changing bodies and she called one of them perverted for touching their dog's nipple after she had puppies. She too away their Shirley Temple dolls they had gotten exclusivley from Shirley herself, they were only ten years old when she did that. They were about twelve when she called the one girl perverted. She slapped them all the time, forced them to do the worst chores in the house. Their lives were sad. Their oldest brother Roger also molested them.

I just read an article which says that the Dionne parents weren't good parents and that Ovila consented to have a lot of money from promoters and the governement soon decided to take the Dionne sisters away from their parents to put them in a Hospital for good care .Actually the parents of the Dionne quintuplets abused their daughters when they returned home .Their father sexually abused them and their siblings always hated them and thought that their parents would have been happier without them..Awful family. The Dionne sisters were very pretty too but i can see sadness in their eyes on the picture at 4.14.Sad,very sad. They lived tragic lives but it is obvious because of what they lived in their early years.R..I.P Marie and Emilie, and may God bless them and bless their other sisters.

Selfish? I would call it criminal. It was certainly child abuse but in the 30's & 40's children were not regarded as they are today. Parents could put their children to work and during the Depression, many children were expected to contribute to a family's survival. Never before the Quints were kids so exploited for the sole purpose of making money (with the possible exception of child film stars) . Certainly a doctor could not appropriate five kids & convince parents that "it was for the children's protection' today. How tragic!

Tracy Herwig Yes, breaks my heart to think of it. We are getting better though. When I had my babies in the early 70's I had to search for a doctor who would permit my husband to be present during their births. Now, it is not unusual for dad to take off his shirt and have skin to skin contact with the newborn with a warm blanket over them both. More than one overwhelmed dad has had tears dripping from his chin and the babies clearly love it. Not for everybody but I like the trend.

These cute little girls in their sweet curls were this IDEAL of childhood... but far from the living standards of the rest of Canada. It's a tragedy that you think wouldn't happen today...but, think Kate Plus 8.... The survivors later wrote how, on return to their parents, life got tougher. Some of the money they made was finally restored to 2 of the sisters. 4 million dollars. The estimate for money earned was in the 100 millions.
