I learned a valuable lesson from my brother, a major dealer of commercial flooring in Southern California: No matter what cleaning process you use, a rug or carpet will NEVER be as clean as the first time it's used or installed. Now I live in Southeast Asia where it's insane to install carpeting and always deal with insidious mold. So for my personal health, I'll always go with tile or hardwood or anything else but a rug.

I’d lay it on a screen, top of carpet facing down, that is suspended off the ground. I’d then soap and pressure wash it using a 30° tip. I’d use heavy weighted round rubber, just a little wider that the perimeter of the screen, to guide the water to a wet vacuum at one end. If need be, I’d also run pressure on the screen side of the carpet (underneath).
