Despite all the turnover of people, Tom Johnston will always be the voice and creative genius of the Doobs with his vocals and his song-writing. And the guitar work of Pat Simmons, Keith Knudsen, Skunk Baxter & Tiran Porter were second to none.

Back in the 70's I played music for a living. We did every Doobie Brothers song that we felt like we could do well. Back in the day I was told I looked like Tom Johnston, and I considered that a huge compliment. I could never play as well as Tom, but I had a pretty good voice. "Listen to the Music", "China Grove", "Long Train Runnin" were not easy because they were very high, but I pulled them off I thought pretty well. At times I wish I had stayed on the road. If I had I may not be alive today, but my life would have been a lot more fun. Anyway, thanks for all the great music and wonderful memories, you guys always have been and always will be my heroes.

Yeah, bad enough that this guy chose such non-representative song out of their whole output, but did such a bad editing job with all the skips, muted parts and no sense of continuity. And what's with all the "appeared on an episode of What's Happening"? Who cares about that. Poor research.

For me, the Tom Johnston hits were great and the Michael McDonald hits were great, too. I dug it all while it was happening. It shows the amazing versatility these great musicians had. Johnston had a serious drug problem, he had to get rehab or he was going to be dead. He left the Doobies in a tough spot. No one could sing Tom's stuff like Tom. Enter Michael McDonald, another incredibly talented and totally unique vocalist, and they built a new Doobies around him. You should realize how remarkable a story this is in ALL of rock. One band with two very different musical identities, both hugely successful with monster hits. Name another band, any other band, who has done that. Name a band AS SUCCESSFUL as the Doobies who then completely retooled and became equally as successful as they were before. Who? No one I can think of.

Or better yet, the Doobies own website says the following: Patrick Simmons Vocals/Guitar Patrick Simmons was born in the rainy western coastal town of Aberdeen, Washington on October 19, 1948. Since his parents were both school teachers, five year old Patrick spent time after school with a babysitter, who just happened to be a piano teacher. This sparked an interest in music, which has continued throughout his life. At the age of six Pat and his family moved to San Jose, California. By the age of eight, Pat had discovered the guitar. With the help of an eight year old neighbor he was able to learn the basics of chording and accompanying himself as he sang. He continued to play all through elementary school and by the age of thirteen he was in his first rock and roll band. Later on in high school he also sang in the choir. Pat’s first professional gig, at age fifteen, was at the Brass Knocker Coffee House in Saratoga, California. He played folk, blues and traditional music along with some original tunes. He continued to play a circuit of small coffee houses, bars, restaurants and clubs by himself and with various bands around the San Francisco Bay Area while finishing high school. In 1967, Pat enrolled at San Jose State College where he pursued a degree in Psychology. He alternated his studies with performances on most weekends. It was during one of these performances in 1969 at the Gaslighter Theater in Campbell, California that Pat first met Tom Johnston and John Hartman, who were at the time playing in a band with former Moby Grape member and mutual friend Skip Spence. The three musicians, introduced by Skip, began a relationship that would last for over twenty-five years. At the time Pat was playing in a band called Scratch with future Doobie bass player Tiran Porter and violinist Mike Mindel. A short time later, when Scratch broke up, Pat accepted an invitation to join with Tom, John and bass player Dave Shogren to form a new band and the Doobie Brothers were born. Throughout the bands’ career, Pat has contributed many songs that have become Doobie classics. The hit “Black Water”, was the group’s first #1 record. He also penned such memorable songs such as, “South City Midnight Lady”, “Dependin’ On You”, “Echoes of Love” and the motorcycling song “Dangerous”. While the group has experienced many personnel changes over the years, Pat has remained as the only member who has stuck with the band and continues to be the driving force behind the Doobie Brothers. He has also recorded two solo albums, “Arcade” in 1983 and in 1995 the Japanese release “Take Me To The Highway”. Recently Pat produced, played on, and engineered a recording by Tim O’Connor, the “hitch hiking poet” - a project worth giving a listen to. Entitled Run Over by Love, the album features songs from the movie “Dead Calm”, starring Billy Zane and Nicole Kidman. Pat lists some of his musical influences as Chet Atkins, Rev. Gary Davis, Mike Bloomfield, B.B. King, Doc Watson, the Moby Grape, Jorma Kaukonen, the Byrds, the Beatles and Bob Dylan. Pat loves spending time with his lovely wife Cris and his three wonderful children Lindsey, Josh and Patrick Jr. He and Cris are avid motorcyle enthusiasts. Both love to ride their Harleys and enjoy attending motorcycle events and collecting motorcycle memorabilia. They also enjoy horseback riding and surfing.

You left out that Jeff "Skunk" Baxter was one of the co-founding members of Steely Dan and appeared on their first three albums, Can't Buy a Thrill in 1972, Countdown to Ecstasy in 1973, and Pretzel Logic in 1974. He was also a session musician before Steely Dan, after leaving The Ultimate Spinach as rhythm guitarist in 1969. He did session work on "The Captain And Me", in 1973 and joined the Doobie Brothers in 1974 while on tour for their, "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits" LP and made his album debut on the Stampede LP in 1975, he is responsible for the addition of Michael McDonald joining the band, that completely changed their sound to a lighter jazz-rock feel, he was with the Doobie Brothers until 1979. I was a fan of both bands growing up in the 70's and followed both closely (Steely Dan and DB's), I like Jeff and Mike's work and their later albums, but for me personally, the Doobies are Tom Johnston and those vocals are just burned into your brain, forever.

And that was the feeling of a lot of Doobie fan's from the early 70's. They couldn't stand Michael and wanted it to be a repeat of the "Rockin' Down The Highway" Tom Johnston approach. And you're right, he got the gig on the back of Jeff Baxter. They actually wanted Bill Payne from Little Feat. I'm probably on my own with regard's to a lot of Doobie Brother's fan's, but I think they made the right choice.

Side note about Journey. In 2006 Gregg Rolie played at the Sierra Hope Run for MD at the Sonora fairgrounds. I had an opportunity to talk with him for about 15-20 minutes. Very laid back and friendly guy. The Captain and Me album is the on that knocked my socks off. The guitar work on "Clear as the Driven Snow" is as good as it gets. Pat Simmons has always been an under-rated guitarist and musician. Addition about the video- whomever put this together had a mild case of Cranial Rectumitis.

Seriously? The writer doesn't know where Patrick Simmons is? Fortunately, Pat can be found onstage with the Doobies. I like and have seen all of the versions of the Doobies, before, during and after McDonald's time with the band. All the great Michael McDonald did with his brilliant composing, fabulous voice and solid playing was help make the Doobies become richer and more popular than they were before he arrived. That being said I'm very happy to see Tom back with the band playing and sounding as good as ever.

I wish I could shake Tom Johnston‘s hand… That list of songs that appears at seven minutes 55 seconds - my word, I wonder how many people who were in high school in the 70s would say every last one of those and more, are like the soundtrack of their youth ... I wonder how many were in garage bands during that time that would agree that if you can’t play China Grove, smoke on the water, la Grange, sweet home alabama, proud mary, and maybe joy to the world (Jeremiah was a bullfrog) - then you might as well just go home. Surely he has SOME concept of the sheer number of us baby boomers who have loved his work, these songs, put them on every “favs” playlist they’ve ever compiled, and to this day, will still reflexively dive to the volume knob to turn it up just like we did on the AM radio in our ‘68 Galaxy when we were 16. Hell, I remember covering doobie bros songs as ‘classic rock’ tunes when I played drums and sang in a cover band in Austin in the EIGHTIES! Get this: Our ‘new stuff’ or ‘current tunes’ were like - the go-go’s or the police or sharp dressed man lol..

i think every kid who auditions for American Idol and The Voice should watch this clip. The Rock and Roll life style isn't for everyone and the demands are GREAT. First off the recording industry has changed from the days since "bell bottoms and LP's". Many singer's aren't allowed the creative freedoms that they think! Even bands like Led Zeppelin were skewered by their parent label, the press if material wasn't up to par. Most of these kids who like Justin Beiber,One Direction have no idea what real music is. Being a singer or being in a band has tremendous responsibility. Today's fame comes to quick,,via TWITTER,INSTAGRAM or FACEBOOK..That's why I return to You tube to enjoy real music. Not manufactured or packaged artist who won't be around in 25yrs..

As far as Canadian groups, Guess Who (especially) and BTO should be automatic! Great groups!

I vaguely remember the "What's Happening" episode. I don't remember Re-run trying to record a concert. I do remember Raj passing himself off as a big-time reporter to get an interview (while only just a reporter for the High School newspaper!) Raj gets a band member on the phone, & asks: "Which Doobie, you be?"

Although his info is readily available on the doobie bros own website. It’s scary how people believe internet info without checking to verify

"In May 2010, John returned with the Doobie Brothers band as their touring bassist, Skylark due to a stroke." This sentence makes no sense.

Anything that included Old MacDonald is not Doobies. He messed with the chemistry of what gave them so much soul and depth during the early 70's.

Man, that Jeff "Skunk" Baxter is one valuable individual if he could get onto a council like NASA's Exploratory Committee...plus I thought he was Steve "The Colonel" Cropper. Just shows me that I don't know everything... Smart man, that guy.

Patrick's personal information is unknown? WTF. He's still with the Doobies! And McFee was NOT the longest member of the band. And what this with "was"? He still is a member of the band. Where are you getting this info? If you're going to make a video like this, you should at least get your facts straight.

That was one of the most poorly put together documentaries I've seen. Left out so much information. Made it sound like all of their claims to fame was appearing on that silly tv show. Alot of the timelines were inaccurate. They were so influential and still are.

Cornelius Bumpus also played with (latter day) Moby Grape. And he, Michael McDonald and Jeff Baxter all played with Steely Dan - Cornelius after the Doobies,. the other two prior. This post is a nice idea but better research, some proofreading and the omission of naming the TV show all the members were on would have helped. Hey, I could even handle the 'What A Fool Believes' loop. But some of the other stuff....? Still, thank you for doing this; the effort is appreciated.

Whoever mentioned being Canadian and thinking Lighthouse should be in the RRHOF- their body of work is not big enough, at least here in the US. I did see them live and I did love them though!
