Which tip was surprising or most helpful to you? Would anyone like to see a part 2 of this?

I LOVE that you did this video, Vanessa! It was so helpful (I was taking notes) as I have a couple disabled characters in my own book. I had a couple betas with similar disabilities read for me but it's so good to know you have a whole group of people on your website. I would LOVE to see a part 2 of this! Anything you want to share on this topic, I'm game!

I think a lot of people will really appreciate videos like this Vanessa, with someone speaking from their own experience in life and in their experience with media. I think a good example, and I would like to hear what you think, is Raven Reyes in The 100. She became paralyzed in one leg and had chronic pain from the injury, she pushed through it, she was a genius and a badass and my favourite character

I haven't watched The 100 so I wouldn't know. I've seen most of season 1 when it first came out, but I never continued with it.

I am simply starting just now with actually writing on my project that was at least six years in the making. In that time, after making at least fifty something characters with varying degrees of prominence, I have at least two characters in the category of disabled. While I am trying to do the research I can, these videos also helped me get aware of what I need to do by the time my characters become relevant to the story I am writing. Oh, and while there is magic in the world (I like fantasy), I was aware of this aspect sooner, so I made limits to what can be done. Like if one does not get immediate medical attention to reattach a limb or caught disease too late or so forth, amputation is the only option, for example. One is a teenager with epilepsy, coddled by family and hidden away until a thing happens and now trying to live a life. Hydraé uses water magic and decided on a life of being the blue water guardian along with other companions. Not the main characters, they are the ones that precede the main characters in terms of positions as guardians. Currently all dead after years of living their lives, but I also want to dive into their stories too. The other is a above the right arm amputee the main characters meet later on when traveling to meet that country’s current ruler. Zhu Hua is an empress dowager with years worth of stories and have been comfortable living for a long time. She is a little grumpy on account of being in her sixties, but she has information to weigh in to the main characters, and recounts her life, including living through a couple of wars. That’s my bit of pitch. They obviously have a lot more going on with them. I just need the time to have everything written out because I have a lot of plot beats with only a prologue and two chapters written out so far and no where near their characters introductions yet. But anyways, thank you for the tips! :)

Glad they were helpful. 😊 You're not at this stage yet, but once you're done writing, you'll want to get sensitivity readers for the story. They can help you figure out if you've unintentionally written something that could be harmful. I also have more tips & guidance in my ebook if you're interested, A Writer's Guide to Creating Diverse Characters: Disability. books2read.com/u/m2lrYj

I'm glad I found this video. Your points are incredibly helpful for including a more diverse cast and in making them more than characters meant to fill a checkbox. The superhero world is such a strange place as the stories too often include elixirs for everything that the writers perceive as a detriment, up to and including, death. I also enjoyed Felicity's time as the CW's version of Oracle as it made for some of their best seasons for storytelling.

This was sooo helpful! I'd love a Part 2. I have a disabled character in Project Diamond, she has Muscular Dystrophy. I am going to do even more research than I already have to ensure accuracy. Thanks!

Ooh, what kind of Muscular Dystrophy? There are so many different types that fall under MD, my disability falls under that umbrella.

Absolutely LOVED this video. So many actionable tips. I've not written a disabled character because I didn't think I could do it justice but these tips are awesome and a great place to start!
