Forgot to mention that Simon more than likely died shortly after the fall and what we see in the end are his last dying thoughts of him living a new life as James with the girl and promotion of his dream. I also think that James being an alternate personality of Simon is an equally believable theory and actually has about the same amount of evidence pointing to it as the double theory.

I don't think it is commentary about communism. If we ignore the main psychological plot which is person vs person/self, the film is set in a dystopian bureaucratic environment much like the classic 1985 film Brazil. If anything it is an extreme world of corporatism or state capitalism where automation doesn't exist yet. While the author of the book this movie is based on was Russian, the book was released in the 1840's which is about 70 years before the fall of their monarchy and the establishment of soviet russia. As an American who is seeing the cultural shift of corporate control and the slow embrace/glorification of overworking, it's not a crazy act of the imagination to see this kind of dystopian world happen in a capitalist/corporate climate as well. I could be wrong but bureaucracy is bureaucracy and can happen in many systems of economics, politics, etc. Nothing here seemed to call out communism exclusively.

Something that isn’t really touched on in this, is the bizarre hospital scene. The whole scene was obviously weird for a lot of reasons, but the main question I have is cantered around the stuff that was said, mainly the miscarriage stuff, and the marriage. My best guess is the marriage stuff was a lie told by Simon (who also gets called James in this scene) as a reason for why he was bringing her there, and his connection to her. But did she really have a miscarriage? The whole scene, ending with the guy who is the “double” of the guard character repeating almost word for word what the nurse said, felt just extremely weird and almost like a dream. Idk just some of my thoughts.

I wanted to point out too, that the overall vagueness of everything around them makes this movie all the more eerie. A few things I noticed were the ketchup bottle just being labeled “sauce” the weird low budget looking generic action sci-fi show that Simon likes. The overall vagueness of the job that they even have, and the lack of explanation for what it is they do or how they do it. The train they take that never has any other passengers. It‘s all so over simplified. Which to me just further adds to the mystique and confusion I had while watching, and still in a lot of ways do. Overall an incredibly good movie overall, probably one of my favorites I’ve seen.

Finished the novel by Dostoevsky a few days ago and now just watched the film adaptation. The novel was fantastic, though could be quite unclear at times, which I think is an important and needed aspect. Movie did a great job of conveying the themes in what seemed like a very fast pace manner. Watching the movie standalone would not give the ideas that the story is trying to convey justice. I think reading the novel is a prerequisite to understanding and appreciating the film. As to your analysis, I would agree with what you say and the dual theory. I did not think of everyone having a double as you did, so that was an interesting concept to me. I think you missed on expanding more on the importance of shame and inability that is a strong idea presented in both the novel and, more visually, the film. All in all, amazing works.

Thank you for your insightful analysis of The Double. I have not read the book prior to seeing the film ( as I would normally do.) As such, I found it hard to comprehend everything in the film due to its fast pace. I think that this is a wonderful film, underrated and very á propos in these trying times ( 1/19/2021). I like films that make me question life. You clarified some of my thoughts on this story. Many thanks.

PS: care to elaborate on the "importance of shame"? Who should be ashamed? Simon? Can a good person do good deeds but feel shame inside? Feel as if they could have done more or better? Shame that they are not living up to their beliefs and passions out of fear or insecurity? Does my question make sense to you? My mind is in overdrive thinking about this film. That's a good thing.🙂 I don't want to rope you into a deep conversation if you're not interested. What you have shared is enough for me! *edited 1time to yet again to express my gratitude. @@marykelly1723 I believe the motif of shame is not as highlighted or present in the film as opposed to the novella. So, I guess I am a bit off base with bringing it up since this is in fact an explanation of the film rather than the book. To answer your questions though, I believe shame could have been conveyed greater. The shame is felt by the main character. You really hit the spot with the Qs you brought up. It is such an important part of the novella, and it hits very deep, you feel bad, but also an immense sense of empathy, and relatability. On the contrary, he does things to deserve the feeling. It really divides your perception of the character, leaving you with a 'its hard to pass judgement' sort of feeling, but still unbelievably sad. I don't want to explain any plot lines as to not give spoilers. The ideas of shame really struck me deep as I grappled with a shared understanding of the common depressing darkness of humanity. I believe all humans have a personal understanding of the Jungian 'underground', which causes a sort of dissonance when trying to empathize or judge the main character. If you have ever felt insecure or depressed then this book will really do you in. It is a really mind blowing book that strikes deep to the core. I like to believe I experienced an ego-death reading it haha. I suggest purchasing the Barnes and Noble edition which includes a few other stories, all just as deep and mind blowing (I believe it is called Notes from Underground and other short stories).

I feel like they are the same person and hallucinations of each other with a perfect bridge of understanding from everyone they interact with. Like fight club, people treat him how he is, when he is either James or Simon. He is seen as brilliant for both, so people may treat him as he acts independently as both James and Simon. They can tell his two personalities apart and respond naturally and accordingly as if they are different. Simon James becomes James Simon then kills James Simon to be the best of both, something Simon James could never accomplish unless he was James Simon. Some scenes that make me think of this, was at the funeral when he punches himself is then sent into a grave, wakes up alone and runs home to a passed out on the bed James. He leaves James there to go to James' apartment and when asked what are you doing here, an assertive James style f off , makes someone think that Simon is at that moment James. Which they are the same and everyone is simply fight clubbing. Then like fight club, he kills himself but survives and only kills part of himself. The colonel sees Simon in the end as Simon but elevated from killing and absorbing back in what James was, Compliments Simon as he was a genuine cult of personality genius, for a bit,who started his other version and gained everything's he could want. When the female lead asked to meet James she was speaking to Simon and even though they inhabit the same body within a intricate web of hallucination to keep them separate, because to this, she is speaking to entirely different people and acknowledging James while diminishing Simon, until Simon didn't exist. Everyone got what they want from James and James got everything he needed from Simon. Except for the leading female who needed both in the end. Because Simon confused her and James was an asshole . Everyone knew and liked James, Simon who was invisible gets everything he needed from James. Simon James was a genius who was stuck, his mind rebelled and split. He was recognized in the end. Needing two separate names and personalities because Simon could never be James and James could never be Simon. All that he did makes him the established Simon James, his brilliance allowed others to deal with his crazy and quirks, till he settled.

I had this thought as well, but to me I think the idea of people knowing he’s has 2 personalities, and still treating one of them as shitty as they treat Simon is a really messed up idea. Along with that it was a pretty abrupt switch as one day he was normal Simon then all of a sudden there was James there as well. Which I feel like doesn’t really give the other characters enough time to adjust to the seperate personalities. Idk just my thoughts!
