If I was Mahidevran I would be busy just loving and raising my son, reading books and going out sometimes and doing a lots of sadakah. Cause there was no tension for money, nannies, teachers, raising a kid alone, fighting bad stares etc.

Yeah, once the sultan gets over you, it seems way too exhausting trying to gain control over a situation you have none in in the first place. I’d so just care for my child and read books, have a conversation here and there, just kinda blend in. If you want a position like hurrems, more power to you, but personally I don’t find the effort worth the stress

Honestly same! I might not agree with the actions that Mahidevran takes as a result, but I can't necessarily blame her for feeling such a way. In a way, Hürrem serves as a constant reminder of what she might've been allowed to have if she'd behaved differently.

@@user-gs6zm5qk9y It's ironic how often people remark on Hürrem's temper when, honestly, Mahidevran's nearsighted rashness led, consistently, to her downfall. Honestly, this is where the mistakes that Mahidevran makes in trying to handle Hürrem start to shine through. @@ivanapervan3783 In a bit of a continuation from the previous video, I almost wonder if Mahidevran was able to feel Suleiman slipping away from her overall? He already seems to be affecting a distance between the two of them, to the point of almost completely disregarding her once they're in the same household again. Add to that the true risk Hürrem poses, in comparison to the other favorites, and her reactive side comes out in the worse way possible. (It's something Hürrem learns _not_ to do, but Mahidevran is forever too coddled to have a chance to learn...)

@@Redluna32I dont think she was aware of that, since nobody could think his affaire with Hurrem will grow to be so serious. Honestly, I think he got used to her and her affection was maybe a bit tiring for him. I think Hurrem was better company overall, since she was so cheerful they always had sth to talk about. I think that Mahidevran let her emotions lead her to be angry to Hurrem instead of concentrate on her relationahip with Suleiman, since it was his call

If these women were free to get a great education, develop a strong sense of self, pursue a profession, actively engage in a hobby or passion, earn their own income, travel, make good friends, save for their own retirements, give back to their communities in their old age, they would not have to fight like wildcats over some man. The patriarchal system they lived under was cruel, damaging to women, and caused their personalities to warp into what we see here.

They did get education, they did have jobs and had plenty of hobbies in the Harem. If you read history and specifically about this time period, you’d know these women had wages and various jobs and positions within the harems. Many of the concubines would get married off with men of high political statuses and their families. Most women didn’t even sleep with the Sultan, as there were entire communities of both women and sterile men working the harems. Not to mention the multiple castles a sultan had with actively working communities. Being in a harem was many times a better environment than in the outside world for a woman, even royal kings and rich politicians would send their daughters to harems to be concubines. The women in the harem served each other and those of higher positions(favorites) would receive more comfort.

Women in Harems were handpicked and elevated where they could be educated, have hobbies, their own properties and wages. But, it all depends on the man. They had to be married or be someone’s concubine/mistress. They had no positions by themselves. Even though these Harem women are elegant and well-read, they are slaves after all. So you are right.
