You’re welcome! It’s not alllll negative but just making sure I highlight some of the cons :)

4:05 Hey Georgia, I don't know if you mentioned the potential health risks of working as a wet lab-biologist (for example, dangerous chemicals, sharp objects, infections from samples etc.) in your previous videos. From this point of view, doing bioinfo is much more healthier than working in a lab, right?

Hey! Yeah excellent point. I would add though that the wet lab have many protocols, people, and departments in place to mitigate the risks in the wet lab. There’s not many people in bioinformatics forcing us to stand up every hour or to take walks at lunch 😂 I think the health risks of bioinfo are more long term when you’re older with years of built up bad posture 😂

@@genomicswithgeorgia That would be a great slogan for bioinfo MSc: Backpain for everyone!

@@nandorliptak575a lot of wet labs use carcinogenic chemicals like ethidium bromide for DNA electrophoresis …. Or creating buffers with very concentrated acids like Hydrochloric acid. This is why I quit the wet lab….besides being poorly paid, I wanted to take care of my health . My health is more important than solving humanity’s problems for poor wage

Most wet labs work with carcinogenic chemicals like ethidium bromide for DNA work and working with very dangerous acids to make buffers. Is solving humanity’s problems at the cost of your health worth it for low pay ?

Since pay is more in the tech industry, is it easy to get into tech as a bioinformatian or not? And can I pursue masters in data science after a bachelors in bioinformatics? Would appreciate your answer.

Hello mam I am from India and need your guidance to make pursue my carrier in bioinformatics.

basically not going for academia eliminates like half* of the cons of being a bioinformatician tbh 🤣 edit: more like 75 to 80%

So should i still pursue it if I don't want to pursue academia? If I want a job in tech world and industry

You hit the nail on the head with the things you mentioned Academia should ONLY be pursued if you TRULY have a burning passion for it because you will be solving humanity’s problems for a very severely poor wage. Egos DO run high in the “rat race” to prove your intellectual prowess. I recommend just sticking to biostatistics because bioinformatics is still at a relatively new and is mostly tailored for academia.
