Missionaries played a crucial part in Taiwan's modernization, and brought Western medical science to Taiwan.
In 1895, 25-year-old David Landsborough had just graduated from Edinburgh Medical College in the U.K. He came to Taiwan and opened a clinic in Changhua. Despite several bouts of dysentery and malaria, he persisted in practicing medicine to save lives and nurturing a new generation of doctors in Taiwan.
A Changhua saying goes, "Mazu Temple at the South Gate, Dr. Lan at the West Gate." Dr. Lan Sr., as he’s known, is almost as loved as Mazu. His son, David Landsborough IV, was born in Taiwan, and also worked as a doctor in Taiwan after his Ph.D. In this episode of Taiwan History, let’s meet Dr. Lan Sr. and Dr. Lan Jr.
