This stuff is coming thru my slabs and its a nightmare. Its ridiculously fast growing too. I pulled all the shoots a week ago and already some are reaching 10 inches+ already. Im wondering if presistent pulling will be enough. I have a dog and hes prone to eating grasses. So no chemicals for me. Apparently you can eventually send the evolutionary signal to it that it is being out-compete in the area by constantly pulling and it will choose to die off on its own. Or it could just be an exercise in futility.

Did you know that Marestail is a wild herb?? It's used by Native American's for yrs. It used for : Stomach aches, Diarrhea. Fever, runny noses. Stomach aches, ear aches, headaches, antibacterial, & more. My father gave 3 leaves to my uncle ( he had cancer) the pain medicine the Dr. Gave him was not working. He took 3 leaves, then waited sometime took another 3 leaves. NO PAIN.

I tried WD40 on our path and it does seem to do the trick, although a couple of stalks came back so I’ve sprayed them a second time and will see what happens. Obviously though this won’t work in the lawn so there it’s down to mowing it regularlt

Awesome! I have been tackling this weed for years, on my 3rd year now I didn't now about the female part! (queue "The female of the species is more deadly than the male!" ) I thought the female part was just the weed getting ready to grow again... One theory I have heard is to change the Ph level in your soil, I've not tried this yet as I don't know what level to change it too.. at my house we didn't have it for a number of years then it grew, and my neighbors as well but no other house which is strange? I am (I am sorry) is using Kurtail which does kill it but it grows back the next year (all be it less), but it's back to what it was because I've didn't kill the Female part... you show this in April, it's July for me now so it is something I need to do next year (Alexa set a reminder to kill Horsetail/Maretail on April the 1st).. :)

Can say I know how you feel. Bloody stuff. Exactly the same in my allotment in Birmingham. I think compost at 60-70c on a large scale would kill it. We can't burn stuff on my allotment sadly.

We just got an allotment last month and were very confused by those heads that appeared to be in everyone’s plots, we too a pic and sent it to a friend of our who is a gardener by trade asking if this was some sort of crop or a weed and how to deal with it, as you can imagine her response was not what we were hoping for, can’t believe that there is no real way to get rid of it for good, apparently you can even cover the area for years and the roots will simply survive underground until the cover is removed and they will just come back. There is an empty plot next to our which is simply COVERED in the female shoots!...

Yes, it’s a survivor from the Jurassic era! I thought it was asparagus when I first got my plot! Gutted! I just keep pulling though and tbh because it’s roots go deep it doesn’t fight for nutrients with crops like other weeds.

@@northlondonallotment6745 We moved house last September and were lucky enough to have a large albeit overgrown veg garden. Although I didn't want to use weed killer I decided to spray it once to clear it and then not use again. I saved some raspberry canes and covered rhubarb and artichokes which we identified amongst the weeds. After spraying it my wife phoned me a few weeks later calling me a "bloody idiot" for "killing the asparagus bed". It did look like dead asparagus and I was very confused how something could grow dead. Now I've identified it as the dreaded Horse tail I have been doing some research. The "asparagus" looked to be growing in rows but this is where I pulled up some self seeded potatoes last autumn. I've recently read that the worst thing you can do is dig over the horse tail as that just helps it spread. I pulled all the "asparagus" on sight and now plan on spraying the horse tail (sorry but I see no alternative). I'm really keen to know if your method of pulling it all on sight has worked. I'm happy to put in the hours doing that for a couple of years if that gets rid of it just not sure if I can commit to that indefinately.

I took over a field last year which is infested with this stuff. I kill the surface ones whenever I encounter them but I dig in and excavate when I have the time. It's a lot of work but I plan to hire some heavy machinery soon and just tear through it one day, go as deep as I need to and sift all the soil to clean it out as much as possible. Failing that I will treat the ground once with a heavy chemical solution. I hate the idea of using it as I intend to farm the field organic but there truly is no other way to ensure this stuff doesn't come back other than the industrial approach. Of course many people just harvest it for teas and such, apparently.

I was talking about the mares tail to another plot holder this week and we concluded since the stuff has survived the dinosaurs it will probably out-survive humans as well! I hope you manage to get rid of it, too much and it's an enormous pest.

Hello, I have this nightmare weed too in my veg plot. I am currently dealing with it the same way you do, by pulling it up. However I recently saw a video where the presenter (and I am really sorry but I cannot remember his name/channel) used distilled white vinegar and baby soap to tackle them with really good results. I am going to do a video tomorrow and should have it uploaded during this week :-)

I have heard of people using vinegar and soap, however I’d be worried about what it would do to the soil and wildlife. There are so many chemicals in some soaps as well. Yesterday however, there was a discussion on a Facebook page about pulling it and leaving it on the surface as a mulch in hot weather. I think I’m too scared it will regrow in the random rain we have though! Let me know how you get on with it.
@kosmosjk
5 жыл бұрын
I certainly will. I am going to do a small experiment away from my beds and try to isolate it by cutting the ends off a 2ltr bottle and putting that over the fern before spraying down into it. I am going to use soap flakes designed for washing baby clothes - that should be about as pure as I can get.

I'm in a rented house (luckily) and this stuff is rife all over the garden. I've tried all sorts of methods and killers and the ONLY thing that works is WD40....yes the stuff you find in your garage to lubricate stuff. Spray it on and 1 day later it's browning/black and dies.

Hi Mate, I have this as well now and its just beginning to be a problem. I have recently used WD-40 and yes it does work on what's above the surface.. But does the plant sook it up and will it kill what's under ground ??
@asw16177
4 жыл бұрын
@@ross6668 short answer no.... But from what I've read about this plant is that nothing will ever permanently kill it, unless you dig 7 feet dog and remove every last root and shoot from the soil. The house I'm renting was built in the early 70s and it has a 3 foot thick concrete base the the house is built on. The mares tail has grown through the concrete!

It doesn't kill it. You have to kill the root. Use a commercial weedkiller called longbow
@blank-dr2kx

@@asw16177 hi Adam, marestail actually grows horizontal and shoots of it vertically which is why it's hard to get rid off. Never pull them out by hand, off the surface you only make the horizontal root stronger. Try Longbow mix with a strong glyphosate weedkiller. Nothing from b&q will touch it👍

I have this in my garden now. And yes it is beginning to become a problem. It's been with me now for about 2 years and at first I had no idea what it was. So this year I did a bit of research and I think I may have come up with a great solution to control and kill it.. What you do it order a hypodermic needle from Ebay, when it arrives fill it with WD-40, then cut the stem of at about 3 inches from the ground and inject WD-40 down into the stem.. This method really seems to bother it and so far where I have done it it has not returned.. I doubt this will eradicate it and yes I will no doubt have to do it again and again but WD-40 is cheap and it works. So for me until someone comes up with a better idea this will do for me..
