Tangent on the subject of boarding actions: It always struck me as weird that 'overpenatration' of man-portable small arms is often presented as a concern in the context of a bording action or shipboard fighting in 40k. I can kind of see it on something like a small freighter or shuttle, but anything frigate sized or bigger is going to have external hulls that are many meters thick even at the weakest parts. I don't see how a stray shot from anything vaugely man-portable (even including stuff like melta weapons) is somehow going to acientally cause a hull breach. There's even less of a concern the further you get inside the ship's interior. In fact, particularly from the boarder's perspective, you may well WANT something that can punch through interior walls and bulkheads if need be. I can see how things like shotguns might be seen as advantageous just in light of the likelihood of fighting in cramped spaces (not that there aren't big wide open areas inside imperial ships too), but the concern about 'accidentally breaching the hull' never made sense to me.
@nicholasrandall3507

I'd think the sensitive piping and electronics behind the walls would be an issue. Don't want to pop a coolant or fuel line mid firefight by accident.
@theatagamer90
9 ай бұрын
@@nicholasrandall3507 Thatd be the big issue. Sure you have multiple hulls but all the stuff that makes your ship function is probably right up near the internal hull. REALLY dont want to capture a ship only to have to drive from in the engine room using tin cans and string as your internal communication system.
@nicholasrandall3507
9 ай бұрын
@@theatagamer90 The trade off would be maintenance access. Having multiple hull layers on the inside makes it that much harder to access your systems. Makes more sense to pad your external layers and keep a thinner internal one. Keep in mind the trade off of adding weight. Heavier ships require more power to change speed and direction, and would be more likely to tear themselves apart with high speed maneuvers.

But…the Dark Eldar cannot use their psyker powers for fear of drawing the attention of Slaanesh. Even assuming they just take their ships from the craftworlders, they would then apparently need to reshape it into the forms the Dark Eldar use

They cant do psychic bone singing. All their technology is for the most part crafted conventionally out of raw materials in factories. They have an extremely advanced level of science and technology probably only second to the Necrons so their machines are almost akin to magic by our standards. As someone else said I always assumed their ships resemblence to Craftworld ships is just because they copy and pasted the designs with blades attached and called it a day, but you could explain it in lore as a result of shared cultural aesthetics that predate the fall.

The video shows very well, how the drukhari operate at a technological, tactical and strategic advantage, but still are held back by their own twisted darkness. Infighting would lead to critical resource shortages, constant rebellions would lead to dwindling imperial tithes, the military would divide into independent juntas and descend upon itself, etc. The whole apparatus of the state would collapse. Countless guilds, cabals, mercenary companies, humonculi covens, aristocrats and all manner of powerful entities/organisations act independently of one another in order to accrue more wealth, power and influence. Interactions between these powerful factions is almost always transactional in nature, bartering amongst themselves for valuable resources or information. Their "king" Absrubael Vect is their "leader" only insofar as he has single most individual power, wealth and influence, which grants him a limited degree of executive power which other individuals cannot match. His word is not universal, and he is in no position to command or order around any of the powerful organisations of Comorragh.

@@oliverpartington6874 The Ten Necessities are the ten factors that all early civilizations shared that allowed human civilizations to develop from hunter-gatherer style tribes into actual civilizations. It's been a long time, but as I remember it, they are: 1. Structured Religion (this doesn't mean modern religion, by the way, it refers more to a religion that is organized in it's dogmas, ethos, and teachings. It also doesn't mean "complicated" or "complex", only that the religion has a somewhat stable, internally coherent, structure) 2. Money (again, doesnt have to mean coins, or gold or anything, only a generally accepted means by which to exchange "worth" for goods and services. As my History teacher explained it, quote" So that a man could carry around the worth of a horse in his pocket or pouch, and damned unlikely he could carry the horse.") 3. Hierarchy/Government (this one refers more to a system by which the people in charge are selected, permitted, or otherwise gain power that doesn't totally wreck the civilization every time the head honcho dies. Doesn't mean that people cant and dont try to circumvent or game that system, only that such a system exists) 4. Farming and Animal Husbandry (self-explanatory, and probably one of the first of the Ten to be developed) 5. Slavery (surprisingly necessary to primitive civilizations, and interestingly, to early philosophy. All modern ethos's and ideas of human value trace their roots all the way back to the "idea" of slavery. This is one of the more touchy and complex of the Ten as concepts, but would, like the "Money" and "Military" concepts, would need a longer explanation than most would like to see in a KZitem comment.) 6. Architecture (this refers more to a general development of "construction" than "architecture" as we think of it in the modern sense. To have a civilization, you'll need at least some kind of semi-permanent form of shelter for your people and storage for things like grain/food and usually for other things like crafting and such) 7. Written Language and Mathematics (this refers to a system by which records can be kept, laws/rules/commandments can be decreed and promulgated, and most importantly, taxes can be tallied, also to allow for arbitration between disputes of exchanges of goods, when they arise) 8. Bureaucrats (someone has to keep track of all the taxes, rules, laws, etc, and these are the ones that do that. Usually glorified scribes, and mostly belonging to the various classes of priests in most early civilizations) 9. Organized Military (by this we mean that within the group of people that comprise the civilization, there has to exist a sub-group that either spends the majority of their time in the study and pursuit of, or exclusively spends their time in the study and pursuit of, the Art of War. This doesnt mean that this group is the sum total of that civilizations fighting capacity, only that there exists a group of people whose job is to look at other groups of people and think "how do I kill you better") 10. I cant for the life of me remember the last one. It's been 22 years since college.

@@vishnu79 Thank you for the information I left school at 16 and honestly with the state of universities I probably wouldn't have learned it there even if I went.

@@oliverpartington6874 In this day and age, it is possible (if unlikely) you'd have come across the Ten Necessities as a concept. However, to fully understand them, and why and how they function, you'd need a fairly pragmatic and insightful understanding of both Human nature, and Human motivations.

Why has the Dark Eldar not been wiped out? I get that the imperium is busy in the current period but during the Great Crusade they could have sent in 1 or 2 legions to kill them all.

Their city is the second most colossal labyrinth in the setting (Fist place goes to Tzeentch's castle) with extremely hazardous security that is beyond dark age tech. The only time anything is allowed in is when the Dark eldar allows them in. Nobody has a clue how to even gain entry in the first place. Also Dark eldar are ridiculously strong. Most media shows them beaten up by Space marines but actually its not even realistic in the setting that in most cases its considered almost non-canon if they lose 100%. In fact, a lot of them can revive from the dead anyway.

Asdrubael Vect literally trolled the Salamander chapter to go to comorragh just so he can overthrow the old tyrant. they did quite a damage, finish their mission and call it a day. I don't recall if it was a tactical retreat or logistical issue but they had to pull out. That's have to mean something about the nature of Comorragh. Not to mention Jaghatai Khan still not returning from chasing after a drukhari fleet.

@@OzzystrayrooThey were also pretty much stuck in loaction as the city defences were so strong the fleet was basically only able to enter grab there missing ship and leave and thag was mostly only because they crought the Dark elder off guard

In addition to Commoragh being a thorny prospect and nigh impossible to reach, the raids are mostly a negligible inconvenience to the Imperium as a whole. Iskandar Khayon commented that the Black Legion assaulted Commoragh once, though not in detail and Commoragh has satellite realms that could be misidentified by Chaos Marines.

Commoragh's scale is often underestimated, that thing is bloody massive, larger in surface size than entire planets.

The idea of slower than light interstellar travel that isn't one way is ridiculous. It's 4.25 light years to get to Proxima Centauri. Unless you're at least getting close to the speed of light the trip wouldn't be worth it.
