The 70's had the best pacing of movies such as this film, Godfather and Dogday Afternoon. The directors did not rush the narrative and they let the film breath. This also enhanced the acting in my opinion. Good review, glad to see someone giving this film the respect it deserves. 🙏

Thank you for the comment! Yes, the 1970s were something else. Most of the popular movies are made in 1970s. That means something for the ones who know :)))

Some people always gotta have some kind of "beef" going on. There's always that guy that needs to fight because he has inner demons to deal with, and sometime YOU have to fight him! Characters like Gabriel Feraud can "harness" that need to fight to excel in their careers (military, sports (Michael Jordan famously used his "beefs" to excel in the NBA), business) unless the need consumes them.

This is among my top ten favorite films....but consider: Ridley Scott indeed owes a great deal of debt to Stanley Kubrick's 1975 release of Barry Lyndon. Scott was able to pull off the "atmospherics" of Barry Lyndon on a much, much tighter budget. Both films complement each other well and are deservedly cinema classics. The only other "modern" period drama that comes close to that level of "immersion" is Peter Weir's Master and Commander.....itself almost twenty years old.

I want to make a video pretty soon about Barry Lyndon too. And I have to thank you for reminding me about Master and Commander. I want to see it again. Probably in the near future I will make a video about it too. With The Duellists, three great films. I miss those types of films...

Everything about this film, the costumes, the music, Keith Carradine and Harvey Keital, the simple story and the progression of the duels all come together to make a film that is soo much more than the sum of its parts. Every scene has its purpose and it all fits together like a puzzle. Excellent review.

The film is everything but rivalry as the good one doesn’t want to fight since the beginning. Rivalry for what ? The film is about sadism from the bad and dutyfrom the good.

True, The Duellists has a way to put you there with the characters and with the story. And to make you feel the tension between them. It's a great film.

Thank you! I know I had issued with the voice on this video and on the Marnie video! I had a really bad time back then and I realized way too late the problem. I think I will re-edit the sound, in the future, for an archival purpose, and post it somehow, somewhere.

Good review. This may be the most beautifully shot historical movie ever made and Keitel’s performance is truly epic. Few actors have ever replicated the level of intensity he exhibits here. This is my favorite movie of all time along with Ang Lee’s “Ride with the Devil”. I’d love to see you do a video review of that film as well.

Thanks for this. However, it is important to acknowledge that the film was built on a story by that master, Joseph Conrad. All the complexity of the characters was born there.

Yes, you are right. I wished to mention about this, but I was more focused on the film and how it is made. I wish to read the original story to see the differences between the original idea and Ridley Scott's idea.

such a brilliant film. Amazing that Ridley Scott could do this so early in his career. The lead performances are outstanding. The visuals… the accurate depiction of military life on campaigns during the Napoleonic wars… just incredible. It’s in my top list favorites, for sure. Yet under-appreciated. More people need to see this movie!

I saw it - the movie - at the cinema. Masterpiece. The best cinematic image of all time. In the TV/DVD versions, these images are not the same at all. The horse duel or the end of the film are two examples.

@@ThoughtsofaFilmStudent The years 83-89 were special in Romania also from the point of view of films. Until 1983, I also saw films from Western countries, even if a year or two late (I saw the first Star Wars in 1980). Since 1983, imports have been somewhat cut because the head of state had decided to pay the country's foreign debt in advance. And then, what to see at the cinema? Romania made films, and there were also some films from socialist countries, but it was not enough to fill the movie theaters. So they used to show "archive" films, that is, films from previous years. That's how I saw "Duelists" at the Patria cinema, in the center of Bucharest, the largest cinema that was not a multipurpose hall, in 1988.

Oau, ma bucur mult ca ai avut sansa sa vezi "Duelistii" in cinema. Pacat de cinematograful Patria, ca e inchis, acum, si uitat de lume... Salutari dragi si ma bucur mult ca ti-a placut video-ul. Sper sa iti placa si celelalte video-uri realizate.
