i made a few cds of a lot of their bluegrass car-chase music. A least a season or two’s worth. Wish i could find the original recordings.

Yeah. First 5 episodes were more or less a completely different show. I love the CA episodes too, but nothing'll ever beat the Georgia episodes.

It's weird how as 10 yr old kid I LOVED the Georgia episodes (including the adult-oriented humor) but then the studio found out how many kids were watching the show & had to make the show KID-FRIENDLY. Roscoe & Hogg of season 3 are NOTHING like their characters of season 1. I understand James Best wouldn't want to play the bullied, dark, serious, intelligent, and extremely competent sheriff for the entire series, but i'd had LOVED for the show to stay in Georgia & have the same characters for the entire 1st year & even the 2nd year. THOSE were HIGH QUALITY episodes & the REASON I loved the show so much! Later on, the series pretty much became a cartoon. By the time Coy & Vance arrived it was unwatchable, even for kid's in the audience (& it had nothing to do with the actors/characters... the scripts during that era were IDENTICAL to Bo & Luke, they simply crossed the names out & replaced the names... so it was a production quality issue, not an actor issue. But at least when Bo & Luke returned, the series felt a little more mature... kind of a balance between the Georgia maturity & the Hollywood cartoon, but that didn't last long before the show was a full-on live-action cartoon again.

As others have said, the setting, the "moody weather", etc. made a difference in Georgia. Much as I love the Dukes overall, the first five have that inherent advantage. Not just location, but factors like music made a HUGE difference. ANOTHER great song -- the background music by the Waylors with Bo and Jill in "One Armed Bandits," also played just before the brawl in the opening scene of "Double Sting" (in Calif, yes). The season one closing theme, the original guitar pick shot, etc. Thanks!

The first Dukes episodes were television at its finest. Sad to see how the show devolved to total kiddie at the end. In fact, I remember at the age of 8 during the second season in 1979 watching and saying "I wish they'd go back to the autistic guitar opening, the episodes were so much better then." Gy Waldron's original vision was the best, and The Waylors beat stock music any day!

It’s been said that this original instrumental music heard in the first five episodes was performed by The Waylors (Waylon Jennings backing band). However, I think the foundation for the guitar rhythms came from an earlier song that Waylon performed called: Big Ball In Cowtown.

The 1st 5 shows are the ONLY shows there ever was "to me". Once they moved it to California, the story-line and plot sorta changed, Rosco got stupid, it all got stupid. The Georgia shows I cherish. Just think how much better the show would have been had they left things alone and kept it in Georgia. Love this music, and Waylon and his band.

@buickdude69 Right on about the first five episodes. I DO think there were good stories in the other seasons, and I do like how it became more of a family show (following the formula in place at the time, the Dukes should have regressed like much of the rest of TV). But, with setting, music, etc., you're on target. A word I like to use -- REAL. Covington and Conyers were REAL. In Burbank, you even see the giant studios in the background. Even in fantasy, one needs a basic reality. Thanks!

Love the first 5 episodes and music!!! I hated it when the added the horn section from the 81 to a couple episodes in the 84 season and then got rid of them. It took that country feel away from the show. My guess the producers thought it would make the show more exciting or serious in a way. Annoying to me.
