They weren't quite as dangerous as people nowadays make them out to be, if they were that bad they wouldn't have sold any, just like a car the Colt revolver rifle was only as dangerous as the person operating it. I've owned several cap and ball revolvers through years and shot thousands of shots through them and never once had a chain fire, if you seal the front of each chamber in the cylinder properly with grease it'll never happen, understandably in the heat of the moment someone may leave that step out or do it improperly resulting in a chain fire but if done correctly you'll never have it happen. I always used regular old wheel bearing grease to seal mine, if I recall from reading they used bee's wax, lard and several other things like that back in those days. But yea, if they were as dangerous as people in this day and age make them out to be than no one would have bought them back then, the reason they were only around for a short amount of time isn't because they were dangerous it's because advancements like metallic cartridges and lever action repeating rifles came to be making them as obsolete as they made single shot muzzle loading rifles obsolete, that was an era when advancements were happening rapidly and the latest thing could be outdated in a couple of years.

I believe the guns were kept in the Captains quarters, there was a gun used for any engagement with another ship these were on a swivel and were more like a blunder buss only loaded with chainshot as in loose links of iron, and any bits and pieces of scrap metal, even walnut shells, it was on a swivel so it could be turned inwards to be used on any boarders from the other enemy ships.

The Colt revolving rifle wasn't a dumb gun. It was cutting edge at the time based on the technology of the day. This rifle was released 10 years before the lever action repeating rifle. The chambers would sometimes fire simultaneously not because of the gun design but because the cartridge design. Percussion caps were a brand new thing thin, but this rifle allowed you to get off a good rate of fire back in the day.
@IRussian007
7 ай бұрын
I know, right? Killing 5 guys before you lose fingers seems like a good trade off at a time when you lost limbs just by marching in close order. And when I was younger, while I liked revolvers for design, I never understood why they were made when magazines were better but then I learned about the percussion cap and realized it was impossible to load cartridges fast enough vs using a drum, which provided a good balance between rapid fire vs breach loading single shots and rapid reload vs using magazines.
@user-sb2og6jd6h
7 ай бұрын
The problem with the gun, wasn't the gun. The rifle cartridge was literally just invented when this rifle came onto the market, they were still getting the cartridge tech down and doing it without computers except what they had between their ears, If you rattled the cartridge wrong you would accidently set it off and firing it rattled them all. Firing it with cartridges made in this day and age is perfectly safe. @@IRussian007

@@hunterbidenparmesanimports5633 a chain fire definitely can do some damage to the shooter. As far as anyone else they would probably have to be close enough but it wouldn't be impossible, the chances aren't 0, any kind of machine including guns has to be respected because catastrophic situations can and do happen and you just have to be mindful of them and do what you can to be safer because there is never any such thing as safe, just safer.

@@hunterbidenparmesanimports5633bullets in the cylinder are a bit different than in a fire. The colt revolving rifle isn't a dumb idea. It's just a flawed design. The difference being that the principle of the gun is very good but in practice it has many issues. People shot the revolving rifle with both hands on the forestock to prevent the risks of gas burns and chain fires. It's not the most comfortable way to hold a rifle, but since the revolving rifles aren't too heavy, it works well enough. A bigger issue with them was powder fouling preventing the cylinder from turning without frequent cleaning or adding grease to the loading process. The thin frame that held the cylinder in place was also not always strong enough for rifle calibers

Maybe Springfield 1795 🤔. And one of those revolving 10 gauge shotguns was made into a pistol during the civil war. The lemat pistol is another cool design from that era too. @@carlsteffens, just because it fell out of style doesn't mean it's obsolete, the Ohio Calvary used them (the one shown here in the short) to great effect in the civil war even after the sharps rifle was introduced. Yeah, tube fed lever action rifles stole the show after the sharps then bolt action, auto, full-auto/burst. No firearms are obsolete unless they are an outright terrible design.
