If the game rules for running out of or leaving the base path are the same as baseball, the ump should've called the runner out post-play for leaving the immediate area of home plate and batter's box. That's technically when the play was over, the tag / call wasn't necessary, the ball was dead. Secondly, home plate team celebrations are traditionally reserved for "walk-off wins" and not when the game is still in active, especially the THIRD inning!? As well, if the manager was taking charge, he should've called the players back into the dugout which would've helped the runner stay focused on touching home plate and not be distracted by a group hug. This base running error was completely avoidable.
@kennysnyder6729

Home plate celebrations seem to be pretty common in NCAA softball. I know Oklahoma does it after every homer, and they have a lot of them, but I've seen quite a few other teams doing it as well. Watching players actually being able to celebrate good plays and not just "walk-off wins" is one of the things I really like about softball. I liked Bailey Hemphill and this was a bad mistake, but tying a game, even in the third inning, is something to celebrate, right? Or should all celebrations be limited to when you win? No celebrating TDs unless it's the end of the 4th quarter, no celebrating goals unless you know that it's the winning goal, no celebrating a great golf shot unless it just won you the match/tournament, etc. Sounds boring to me. Made a good play? Celebrate any time you make one, even if you want to look like a fool for celebrating anything when you are clearly out of the game. This celebration was fine, just make sure you touch all the bases.
@chrish7336

Running out of the baselines only applies when avoiding being tagged out or giving up a base. This however is a dead ball ruling of which carries different guidelines. Stop and think about it, if you are that technical about the out of the baseline rules then you have to call out every runner rounding or turning to the next base.. That said... A home run is technically a dead ball 4 base award. This same ruling applies to every base awarded on a dead ball award. This is the same thing even in Major League Baseball that most people don't know. The Ump cannot give a ball back to the fielding Team until after the final bag has been crossed for the award. Once the runner crossed home plate and started cheering with her team the Umpire at that time would provide the new ball. The rule book states an appeal (which is what this was) can be made with any live/active ball before the next pitch or play. So even if the ball goes out of the park the appeal can be made with the new ball coming in. To make the new ball live/active though, it needs to go to the pitcher(as with any dead ball) and the pitcher touch the rubber. From there an appeal can be made on any base and any runner. Additionally, the runner could have returned to tag the base without chance of being out out before the appeal as long as she didn't leave the field of play, or didn't receive assistance from her team mates. Unfortunately as soon as her team mates gathered and she came in contact, it would have been considered assistance and she technically no longer had that opportunity. So even if she did touch the plate and an appeal was made, she would have been out.

She is out the second a player or coach touches her to get her to go back to touch. The way this is done is weird. She should be out it’s no different than a third base coach pushing a runner to help them score or a third base coach tapping a runner to get them to steal. You can’t do it. Now if a player or coach said go touch the plate without touching her then she would have been safe. Moral of the story touch every base every time and you won’t look like a jackass that doesn’t know how to run the bases

Pat O'Brien I honestly don't understand your confusion. She ran the bases and got tagged out at home. That's why it's a triple. You can hit the ball from here to the moon, but you still have to touch all the bases to register the home run.
@mystichdx
6 жыл бұрын
Pat O'Brien You have the hold and control a ball for it to be considered a catch. A "catch" is not the act of the ball striking the glove. You're getting a bit silly with this now. No one playing catchin their backyard -- much less playing in a professional game -- would see a ball slam against your open hands and bounce off and then say "oh you caught it then dropped it". You're going out of your way to ignore the obvious and just be contrarian.

The Dumbest Thing Ever In Softball History,.................BY THE UMPIRE! To those claiming she made a mistake, and that the umpire made the right call.........YOU"RE WRONG! 1- She can ONLY be called out AFTER a home run if she does NOT step on the plate and enters the dugout, which she didn't. She NEVER entered the dugout! 2- She can ONLY be called out had the other team set up for the next batter, and had the catcher returned the ball to the pitcher, the pitcher had to get on the mound and right before the next pitch, step off and challenge the play......this did not happen either. The catcher NEVER gave the ball back to the pitcher and the runner never entered the dugout, she had all the right to go back and safely step on home plate to validate the home run. This was an intentional bad call made by the umpire, because you can clearly see him talking to the catcher while giving her a new ball. He's the one who told her to challenge home!
@HotSauceX05
2 жыл бұрын
The strip of dirt in front of the dugout is considered out of bounds. The minute she touched it, she was out of play. The catcher can call for a new game ball the minute a home run or foul ball is ruled, this is the reason why. If anything, he was late giving the ball to her because the opposing team blocked the box. And no, it doesn't have to get back to the pitcher. When the ball is handed to the catcher it's a live game ball. Is it stupid? Possibly. But at the end of the day she failed to finish the play and her teammates may be more to blame for covering the plate in the middle of an inning. Moral of the story, don't celebrate a 3rd inning home run like you just won the game. That's what the dugouts are for. There's a reason you've never seen MLB teams celebrate mid inning home runs, this is why. This was poor coaching and very poor situational awareness.
@chrish7336

This is a dead ball 4 base award... #1- YOu would be correct, but this is still an appeal play and not automatic. #2- The next batter does not need to be in position. Though you are correct in that the ball should have been returned to the mound which is unverifiable in this video. #3- She gave up her ability to return to tag home plate once the celebration started and she was touched. This falls under the assisted runner rule. Hence the reason one of the coaches was trying to keep the other players away from her. Even if the batter came back to touch home, if a proper appeal was made she would have been out.
