This is such a treat to watch, that even back then, Dr McDougall was working very diligently to find options for us that would make our lives simpler, knowing full well we all live in the real world and need to make tough choices sometimes. Dr McDougall I really thank you for dedicating your life to teaching us true health. And you’re right that we will all get to live longer on average by following your simple rules. Although I don’t agree with this guys diet, he is a really relaxing voice to listen to. Even though I don’t believe this is the healthiest diet ever to be on (from personal experience) it is still much healthier than the majority of American diets which counts for something. My journey into veganism and raw foods propelled me into caring about what I put into my body and being conscious about my health. And I will always be grateful for that even though I think the low fat thing is false.

Fred Fuchs I will eat an entire salad with a vinegar dressing, but it isn't tasteless. Vinegar is pretty much taste-filled, though it may not be what a meater palate is used to, deadened as it is by all that sugar, high fructose corn syrup, salt, preservatives, polymered animal fat and denaturized animal protein coating the mouth at all times. Combining any nice infused vinegar with pureed berries, for example, creates a delicious dressing for a salad.
@tamcon72
9 жыл бұрын
Fred Fuchs I'm a trained cook and fat actually has very little flavor. It's the stuff ancillary to fat, like the culture in butter or aromatic enzymes in walnut oil, that gives fat flavor. You can look this up. Or you could try eating salad for a few days, dressed with the dressing I described, and decide for yourself. P.S. Lulz at "rabbit food"; no one calls vegetarian food that anymore except the very, very old.

Dr. McDougall, your son, Craig's, question made me smile. "Why don't you just tell people to eat sweet potatoes and broccoli?" That is exactly what I live on. I read you first book, The McDougall Plan, when it was first published in the 80s and it changed my life. Thanks to you, after many years of poor health, my life began to turn around. Today I feel great and I am the healthiest I have ever been, and I'm a baby boomer. I eat a few other vegetables also, but I have many food allergies and because I cannot tolerate any grains, sweet potatoes are the staple of my diet -- with the addition of broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, mushrooms, squash and a few other vegetables and whole fresh fruit. You probably don't realize how many lives you have saved. I am certainly one of them and I could never thank you enough. I am so truly, deeply grateful.

+humanISvegan Just because McDougal is loading up on bar-b-que sauce, doesn't mean that refined sugar is healthful. I think the fresh fruit would be a far better choice. I don't think the issue is just fat versus carbs, it might be refined versus unrefined too. Walnuts and avocadoes, in moderation, on a large green salad, would have to be better than bar-b-que sauce. Probably a volume issue as well, volume of sugar versus volume of oil for equal calories.

Have you heard of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, or fiber? is apple juice as healthful as blueberries? How about fucking soda? Phytochemicals are the hottest thing in cancer research today. Don't think dark leafy greens are healthful? They contain protein and, yes, fat. Something like 30% - 50% and 15%, respectively. Whatever.

oh God, potato paradise!!! When I was pre-vegan a friend of mine who is a diabetic always made fun of me and said "better eat a steak, but don't touch the potatoes and rice because you will get so fat." I lived witht he mindset that carbs made you fat and always felt miserable, because I adore potatoes and rice. Now I lost so much weight (I was slightly over the average weight) and I feel like a machine, eating as much as I want. Whenever I eat out, my part of the bill is always the smallest as opposed to my friends' bills. Who said eating vegan is expensive again? A steak with something on the side is more expensive than a veggie rice dish and a salad. At least in my country it is.

Wow, this was priceless, thanks for posting it! This guy changed my life. Anyone who gives his program a very fair trial and puts aside their learned bias and preferences will be amazed at the huge benefits they will gain! Instead of talking shit about him or his methods, ACT on what he teaches and I guarantee if done right your health will benefit, and the sicker you are, the more dramatic the improvement and changes. I initially did not WANT to hear his message because it differed from my opinion. I can now freely admit that my opinion truly was like the proverbial asshole! I was desperate because I was so sick, diabetic, obese, arthritic to the point of needing assistance getting around, and despondent to the point of suicide, on multiple pharmaceuticals to mask the symptoms, yet nothing got better...it got worse. Until I went searching for a better way, and finally gave it a try, despite my doubts and objections. Sad that it took crisis to convince me, but that is our nature I guess, we continue to do what we are accustomed to and are blind to what conflicts with our acceptance...until we get desperate. Don't wait to get sick peeps, this guy is so on target, whether you want to believe it or not! We have been duped by those who profit enormously from our positive belief in their "product" ... be it processed food, pharmaceuticals, animal foods, ( a HUGE muti-layered issue so riddled with opinion instead of fact); fats, toiletries, chemicals, on and on. We are brainwashed to believe these products will improve our lives, contrary to the reality that good ole mother nature and our biology has the last word on the perfect "product" for us, not the whims of greedy men seeking $$$. We put our lives into the hands of profit seekers, whose biggest concern is their bottom line, NOT our welfare! Open your mind to new ideas, question your beliefs, THINK...one of the best exercises we can all do!!!

He stands on the shoulders of generations before, Pritikin, Cornish, Shelton, ancient shamans, Chinese medicine etc. Mcdougall made the science understand to lay people, and did stastics for evidence for medical experts

Just amazing he was setting the mark before most vegans were born! wow I remembered when Wendy's had a salad bar. Pizza w/o cheese and meat sounds good!

I enjoyed seeing this. Dr McDougall has led the way for good health on a Plant Base diet for over 40 years. This film show his integrity, he has not wavered or changed his strong message and believe that eating meat is bad for you. However eating all fruits, vegetables, green herbs, nuts and seeds is the best food on the planet for all of us. There is NO EXCUSE you can eat HEALTHY PLANT BASE FOOD every where.

Thanks so much for the video. I read the McDougall Plan way back in 1987 and although I've fallen away from the diet several times, I always return to it. Dr. McDougall was right all along.

Burger King offered a veggie black bean burger as far back as the 80s-90s. I used to get it a lot. Only problem was you could tell it wasn't ordered often and sometimes it would be freezer burned and hard.

John McDougall--Condiment Addict, lol! This was so interesting from a sociological perspective; some of the products we see at the store have been around for a looooong time! And so has this man's mission. It's weird how little traction his ideas and protocol have gotten over the years, and how little media attention, lately. I really think the next wave will be all the healthy vegans eating this way for the animals and fitness, not to reverse diabetes or heart disease. Let's keep getting the word out! Thanks for posting : )
