It is not only historical it is beautiful and should be saved for future generations. 175 years old! Come on New Jersey, get your act together and make this happen.

It would be a disgrace if the State allowed this historic structure to rot away. Been there many times to photograph it, hope it's saved.

This one and Fins Point are the only New Jersey lighthouses I have yet to visit, East Point was closed for years for repairs and its location all by its self makes it tough to schedule in a visit, its too far to go on a one day shore trip from where we live and there is nothing else to do near by. Cant wait for this video, Ive been thinking about finally trying the NJ lighthouse challenge and seeing all of them.

Hi Joey, Thanks for showcasing this beautiful lighthouse, I hope that somehow the entities put their heads together and come up with a solution. Couldn’t the Army Corps of Engineers be asked for their expertise on what options would be best to save it? Thanks again! Pat

I wonder that too. Maybe too much? If you think about it if the DEP is telling the historical society to raise the building that would mean that they aren’t paying for it? They would put it onto the historical society to raise it and to raise the money

@@WildwoodVideoArchive I agree the metal wall looks like a no brainer if it is cheaper and protects the property, politics I guess. Alot of lighthouse society's have the same issue turning a worthless property into a beautiful place and preserving history with their own hard work and fund raising only to have the now desirable place reclaimed by the local or federal government after the hard work is done. Its wrong in so many ways. Hoping it gets sorted out with very little impact on the light house a d people can continue to enjoy it. Had no idea it was so beautiful there, or so close to cape may and wildwood, will have to fit a side trip to east point into my next WW trip. Thanks for the video👍

I can see both sides of this. If they abandon the project the money raised can't just stay in the hands of the historical society. But THEY ARE the ones raising it. Come on, NJ, let's get together on this. Do it for the tourism and local residents, both.

I completely agree!!! There aren’t too many attractions in this actual town so this is a bug boost for the local economy. PLUS summer is when people go exploring so they need to get this open.

@@WildwoodVideoArchive They kept us closed for one reason ... they were trying to get the society to sign a very bad management agreement that would have lead to both the removal & bankruptcy of the society. Now, years later they are trying to do it again. They want the lighthouse to fail like so many other places along the southern bayshore have failed, homes, businesses, entire historic towns have been lost much in part to DEP overregulation & dragged out approval processes, permits and fines ... and the community/society is in the way. The more successful East Point Lighthouse becomes, the more they block needed projects and buck giving the society a renewed lease. No other NJ Lighthouse has been treated so poorly.

Thanks for reporting on this. As a historian I hate the idea of raising the building. And armoring the beachfront has a number of drawbacks. Moving the structure would be possible, the Hatteras lighthouse has been moved, but then you lose the connection to the site.

Moving the lighthouse has many more drawbacks than securing the point. Why move a historic building that also serves as an active lighthouse without trying other options first? Moving is done as a last resort. If moved it could no longer be a lighthouse. It would also lose so much of its history and beauty.

As much as we appreciate you sharing about East Point Lighthouse it's very disappointing that you didn't contact those who know the facts. Sadly, your facts are incorrect. First ... the lighthouse was under the watch of the State of NJ/NJ DEP when the fire took place in 1971. The state didn't even bother to board up the lighthouse under its care so it had been a local hangout for many years. The fire was started by arson ... NOT by the Maurice River Historical Society and NOT under our watch. The society wasn't even given permission to begin protecting and restoring the lighthouse until a year after the fire in 1972. After the fire as the society begged for permission from the State of NJ to begin restoring the lighthouse the State dragged out the approval process and left the historic lighthouse exposed to the elements ... no light ...no cupola ... no roof ... not even a tarp for over a year. Second, as for raising the lighthouse without securing the grounds/point, what would that accomplish? Once again the State of NJ was mismanaging the lighthouse. If raised, the lighthouse would then become an island, not only inaccessible to the public but would still fall into the bay as the unchecked erosion continued, it would just make a bigger & more expensive slash as it fell. Keep in mind the first floor of the lighthouse has never flooded in over 175 years. The last time it came close was in 1950. Water level is not the threat ... it's eroding land. If the unchecked erosion isn't corrected by adding real erosion protection like has been added & maintained over the decades at the other NJ Lighthouses that were threatened by erosion , all will be lost at East Point. It's well past time for East Point Lighthouse to be treated by the State of NJ with the respect it so well deserves. East Point Lighthouse is on the State & National Registry of Historic Places, is the second oldest lighthouse in the state, is an active lighthouse managed by the USCG, and also serves under the management of the Maurice River Historical Society as a year round educational museum & tourist attraction that's open to the public for tours and special events. Thousands of visitors from all over the State of NJ, all over the US and even international visitors tour and enjoy East Point Lighthouse each year. Sadly, despite the amazing successes, taking the lighthouse from an abandoned, burned out shell to the beautifully restored, fully furnished and active lighthouse, the battle with the State of NJ/NJ DEP for a workable lease to continue managing the lighthouse continues.

While the site is not historic the lighthouse is. The light house needs to move. It's been done before. It takes agreement, then time and resources.

I agree that it should be moved but the problem is that with the way the erosion is going they would have to move it 100 feet back Inland. I feel like the cost of a bulk head would be cheaper

@@WildwoodVideoArchive They need to search for entirely new location that would be protected from erosion for centuries. Besides it is long longer functioning as a lighthouse therefore it can be moved anywhere.

Both the lighthouse and the land are on the National Registry of Historic Places ... two separate listings ... both are historic! Keep in mind ... think through how much would be lost off the lighthouse was moved. It would no longer be a lighthouse for starters. Moving is done as a last resort ... not before no other measures have been tried. Part of a low sandbag wall is not trying BTW ...
@MrJimckorn

@@eastPointLighthouse-vw3oc Putting anything on the National Registry of Historic Place does not protect the problems this beauthiful lighthouse faces. You are niave to say "moving is a last resort." It already is probably too late. This is New Jersey. Not known for solving problems by opening up the state wallet. Perhaps having the Federal government step in and designate it a National Park. That certainly transformed the Great Falls in Paterson and saved it from further decay. Think big beacuse the problem is BIG.
