NOTES - All taxonomic names are made up by me. You can find my semi-canon phylogeny (which all of these videos are based on) here: tinyurl.com/OceanPhylo - If you would like to see only the canon evolutionary trees, Zugzwang recently translated and published all of them here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13PeFQLI_T5G8TKN8Um_htVlsljh2MgneXO2qQHTezXE/edit?gid=294402797#gid=294402797. - All relative locations on the World Map from Gen 1-2 are taken directly from Hunter's Encyclopedia 1&2, but anything past that is mostly speculation. Many statements are based on the semi-canon World Map of the Monster Hunter Universe that I made a while ago. You can find it here: tinyurl.com/OceanMHMap - The regional variations of Nargacuga aren't pointed out directly in any of the books, so while the differences between them do exist, the logic and justifications around them are mostly assumptions on my part. - The color variations of the Fonron Nargacuga are only ever mentioned in Artbooks: To my knowledge, they are not present in any game. - At 8:13 I call Nargacugas tail "prehensile". That is incorrect, since prehensile tails are tails that can grab objects, which the Nargacuga cannot. This is a mistake on my part, I adlibbed this word in while recording for some reason. - "Jungles produce very few fossils" isn't a Monster Hunter Lore Fact, its a Real Life Lore Fact. - Bezoar Stones are a real thing, but as far as Monster Hunter is concerned, they are only ever mentioned in relation to Hypnocatrice. - The exact relationship between the Hunter's Guild and the Frontier Hunters is unclear. While they very obviously work together, and while we know that Mezeporta is in/near Dundorma, the precise interplay between their duties and activities isn't known. - The Hypnocatrice Variations alluded to in this episode exist in Monster Hunter Frontier and Monster Hunter Online. As both games are not considered part of the main series (as seen by their rosters being entirely excluded from the recent Popularity Poll) this documentary did not cover them in detail - I just wanted to tease them as a little wink to my Mezeporta Chads. - The pricese logic by which the relationship between regular and Daimyo Hermitaurs was determined is mostly made up by me, in-canon they were simply at some point determined to be juvenile and adult, respectively. - Plum Daimyo is not specified to be getting its coloration from a fish, merely stated to be from "its diet". - Stonefist being the result of hormonal imbalance is pure speculation on my part. - Plum Daimyo and Terra Shogun are, as far as all the games and official materials are concerned, SUBSPECIES. However, their descriptions as being discolored by dietary alterations should put them into the category of a VARIANT. There are a few such cases in the franchise, and this video series will generally assume that in-universe, the Guild simply misclassified these creatures early on and that it is now in the process of amending this. This is however not canon. If you want to know why the games have been so weird with their definition of Subspecies, check out Luty's thread on the topic: twitter.com/lutyrannus/status/1634118356864212992 - Shen Gaoren are stated to see fortresses as a "threat" in the Lore, but that being because they mistake them for rivals is a hypothesis on my part. - Bullfango's Mindmap is an extension on my part of a few bits we get of how their minds work: They are stated to be aggressive towards things they dont recognize while being very chill and decisive about things they do recognize. - Tigrex fossils being originally thought to be from juvenile Wyvern Rex is made up by me for flavour. - A lot of the "history" of discovery is embellished: We know roughly how the Guild felt about the Tigrex, that it was discovered near Pokke and that Molten Tigrex' discovery was based on longstanding rumors and traces, and that it shocked the Guild. - "Viosonic System" is a name I made up for what the canon calls the Tigrex' "Roar Sac" or "Roar Pouch". I wanted a name that more directly expressed that this is not one organ but rather an umbrella term for a number of adaptations. - Brute Tigrex' color variation is explicity stated in the lore numerous times, but we don't really see in within any one game - it is mostly used to explain why it looks so different across multiple different games. - The "Stuck in a Volcano" Evolution of B. Tigrex is a hypothesis on my part - each singular step of this evolution is described in the lore like that, but they are not given any comprehensive timescale or relation as is done in this film. - The connection between Molten Tigrex' gigantism gene (which is explicitly established in the lore) and Grimclaw's size is not pointed out in any official material, its an assumption on my part. - The exact history of the discovery of Congalala and Blangonga and their subspecies is embellished by me. - The mushroom based regional variations of Congalala are mentioned in the books, but to my knowledge they are not ever distinctly shown in any of the games. - It isn't specified how a Blango becomes a Blangonga, it being tied to a hormonal rush is an assumption by me. - The evolutionary history of the Copper Blangonga presented here is an embellished version of a few details we get in the canon. - The discovery of the Rajang as described in this video is a more direct version of the story we get in bits across multiple books. The lore does indeed specifically mention bodybags. - The name of Rajangs transformation is 闘気化 in the books, which literally translates to "Fighting Spirit State". I find that a little clumsy on the ears so I adapted it into "War Spirit Form", which is still lexically accurate. - The Rajang's War Spirit Form being managed by hormones is a guess by me, we don't get a detailed description of the biology behind it - The tail being a command node of the hormonal system is also an assumption, the lore simply states that in order to conserve energy, the tail sends "a calming signal" to the Rajang to turn off its rage. - Ever since the Iceborne Book, the Lore has made an effort to leave it ambiguous if the Furious Rajang lost the tail to injury or to intentionally ripping it off. - The history of the discovery of Akantor & Ukanlos is broadly accurate, but embellished by me. Akantor destroyed villages and needed an army to be repelled, Ukanlos appeared after an avalanche and was defeated by an unnamed hunter. - "Old Furahiyan" is a fake language made up by me. The Lore Entry for Akantor mentions a "local language", and I figured it would be fun to expand that into a full language system. - The Third God is Odibatorasu from Monster Hunter Frontier. These videos do not typically cover Frontier, but I did want to at least allude to it. - The history behind the Chameleos' appearance is embellished by me. - The history behind the discovery of its invisibility mechanism is dramatized by me, but otherwise broadly accurate. - Fucium Ore being found inside the Chameleos is 100% canon (you can even get it as a carve/drop from it) - The different Toxins shown in this video are special poisons that Chameleos has had in its various appearances, as he is actually quite different in every game he is included in. - All the names of the Toxins are made up by me. - The History of the Elder Dragon Observation Center is broadly accurate, but embellished by me: In the Lore, we do not know for sure that the Great Elder seizing Dundormas prayer hall constituted a cultural revolution, but we do know that it heralded a global shift in how monsters were dealt with - Dragon Diviners are mentioned like twice in the Lore, so they are somewhat expanded here. - This film hints at the skills of the Dragon Diviners being related to how the Twins resonate with Narwa and Ibushi in MHRise. This is not explicit canon, just an implication I found interesting enough to include. - Kushala Daora metallizing itself to death is mentioned explicitly in canon, but its a little complicated: Its attached to a graphic, and whenever that graphic gets reused in a later book, its 50/50 if the part about Kushala's death is included or not. To retain that uncertainty, this aspect of the monster is presented as speculation in this film. - The history of the establishment of the Elder Dragon Classification system is never told to us in the Lore as one story, simply described in bits and pieces. This film combines them into a sequence, with some embellishment. - We don't know what exactly makes Elder Dragon blood special. - New World Individuals being older is presented as an in-universe theory, and is not considered confirmed. - I call Teostra and Lunastra collectively "Flame Dragons" but that's just the title they have in some of the games. As far as the lore goes, they don'thave a bespoke species name. - "Flame Shroud" and "Blast Shroud" are names made up by me. The Blast Shroud does have an official name ("Dispersing State") but I chose to change it. - "Supernova" and "Hell Flare" are the official names of their ultimate attacks, as described in MHW Complete Works. - Which of the two dragons is more aggressive than the other has changed across games, so this film tries to keep that variability intact. - The Hunter's Guild being a collective of multiple semi-independent organizations is mostly canon, it is established that there are multiple Hunter's Guilds that are often collectively called "The Guild". - While it isn't ever addressed in-canon, it is implied numerous times that there are multiple ancient civilizations and not just one. - The plants on the back of a Yama Tsukami being imbued with the same energy as Elder Dragon Blood is an assumption by me: In the Lore, they are stated to simply be "empowered".

As for the Tigrex, i would suggest that the wing membranes still serve a role in thermoregulation. Such a large active predator would probably have issues with overheating, so perhaps there is some mechanism that cools its blood as it passes through the wings. Maybe it has a high body temp naturally but pushing blood through the wings and "exposing it" to air temp cools the blood down
@someguynamedowen9944
Ай бұрын
Another thing I’ve thought about is what if the membrane is more useful for young Tigrex. Being a bit more developed for gliding to aid in hunting and traversing, especially since young Tigrex lack the raw power of the adults. With this ability fading out as they get older in favor of stronger forelimbs.

Thing is though how then would they be so adapted to cold environments?
@trevordillon1921
22 күн бұрын
@@kennethsatria6607yeah, so any time we talk about large surfaces on animals like this we’re going to run into this problem, because it kind of works both ways? It sort of depends. In a hot but otherwise windy environment, large surfaces like these can be used for cooling, which is an actual phenomenon we’ve observed in nature. Thing is, any sufficiently large surface can also serve as a big solar panel, so it’s conceivable that in some cases they can help absorb sunlight and increase warmth. In practice, this pretty much doesn’t work. At best you might get something near a net neutral, but when you consider that the cold is always worse at night, the whole idea falls apart. But there is a simpler explanation. We don’t know exactly how they came to evolve in the first place, but we do know that we’re operating on a loose approximation of evolutionary principles. And, at least to me, their wings have always seemed to be largely vestigial. They don’t really serve a purpose anymore, but when one considers that it has both a need to be warm, in its environment, and capable of good cooling, during intense activity, it’s at least conceivable that they’re not a net negative overall. We see otherwise negative traits pop up in nature, so it’s not lacking a basis in reality.

I'm gonna guess that the term "Monster" is largely traditional at this point. Society had been in the shadow of these creatures for so long, with such a radical shift in mentality required to assert itself against them, that even now, where the species that once heralded disaster can be dealt with and understood (mostly), they are still held above normal, less powerful animals due to their influence over how civilization developed.

2:58:15 by this measure Deviljho most of all, and perhaps a few other monsters should be classed as Elder Dragons. But I believe the defining trait that makes a monster an Elder Dragon is the devastation it brings not by its actions, but by the calamity of its very presence in an area. That just by being there, a Kushala will cause hurricanes and gales. That the area around a Teostra will ignite just because of its body temperature.

Like the earlier person said, that doesn't really cover everything. I would say that the requirements of being classified as an elder dragon is the possession of some kind of unexplainable ability that seems much closer to magic than science. They don't really have to be overwhelmingly powerful- You could place a few specific non-elders in a fight against kirin or chameleos and expect the non-elders to win confidently. But while those strongest non-elders like Bazelgeuse, Rajang, Deviljho, etc achieve their power through believable biological features such as simple immense strength, the elders get their power by just defying logic, whether that's by generating ridiculous amounts of electricity out of nowhere, having a literal engine in their chest, going invisible, absorbing minerals to form unbreakable armor on their skin, regenerating from a single scale, etc.

@Oceaniz I double checked and it's in a few of the Monster Hunter encyclopedias, and lore bits hinted at in art books. Which also explains why it's hard to find since those don't leave Japan too often. But one of the details is that hunting was started by Wyverians and then shifted to humans. With the humans having a greater propensity for strength and durability due to ambient genes from a super soldier program back during a human dragon war. Whi h is where you get the ruins on Fonron.

Video documentaries like this are what make it so enriching to be a fan of Monster Hunter. While there is always the underlying rules that games should be fun before anything else - which does still apply to the games - there is something so beautiful when a community for a series is able to delve so much more into the lore of these worlds, making them that much more believable and living. Some of it maybe heresay and fairy tales, but the explicable existences of these animals, natural or otherwise, is what makes Monster Hunter stand out so much amongst its contemporaries. Even if you are a person that prefers the act of hunting over ecology, such as myself, you have to give immense respect to the work that not only goes into making these creatures feel larger than life, but part of a natural world that is all their own. This is a wonderfully made video Oceaniz, thank you for giving us this nature documentary from the Guild. And I look forward to further studies from other generations of guild research and documentation.

Maybe the hermitaurs cause for growth is finding the skull. Maybe theyre able to get some nutrient that impacts how they grow, which could possibly also make the plum.

Hey man love your videos, would you ever consider putting your more long form content on Spotify as a podcast? I’m not sure if that’s allowed but I’d love to be able to listen on the go!

I know i already commented once before here but ive been slowly digesting this video bit by bit over the last week or so lol so i apologize in advance. Im honestly surprised you didn't mention Voljang! I know origin species are technically NOT true ancestors to the species that are in the mainline games, but it does help provide a good look into the true ancestors to both of them as well as most of the ape fanged beasts. Regardless, keep up the great work, i appreciate your videos and im looking forward to you next one, im sure this one was a huge step given its length.

Love this series and hope to see it continue! Must say I’d be curious to see how long the 5th Gen episode would be given how many new monsters were introduced (with both Alatreon and Fatalis both in and out of universe being talked about more openly as well)

1:43:17 I know this is probably from a kore booo or something, but it's extremely funny when paired with the knowledge that around half of Tigrex' cutscenes involve it attempting an ambush
