Hey! Just discovered the series (& the channel) cauz the Special Cranker sent me looking for Electra-styled drive.. Subbed One detail.. I checked the EM-Drive's schematic & it doesn't use clipping diodes.. So it's maybe better described as an "Electra-gain stage" or "Electra-boost" rather than an "Electra-drive"

Hey, thanks for the sub. You’re probably right. We were back and forth on including the Em-Drive and definitely got some conflicting opinions on whether it fit in the series or not. It came up enough that we finally decided to check out. Did you check out the series premiere yet. We talked to a bunch of awesome people about the circuit. A lot of time went into that video.

@@PJandtheBeard Hey! Just checked out the premiere, great job!!... I would say it fits in the series, maybe it should be the very first episode, even.. I can easily imagine a three position switch with two clipping options & a "diode lift" in the middle (would have liked the Special Cranker to do that!)

Hi! It doesn't "sound" like a Electra because it doesn't have any diodes for hard clipping after the transistor. :) All the "grit" you hear is the trasnsistor clipping itself.

If there are no hard clipping diodes that explains it. Wonder why so many people claim it to be an Electra type circuit. Still a great pedal and happy we got it in. So with not hard clippers does that make it closer to a boost type circuit?

@@PJandtheBeard It's a very basic circuit, like 101 of electronics of how to amplify a signal 1x transistor, 2x resistors and 2x capacitors. The "electra distortion" is just that, with added pair of clipping diodes to ground on the output of said transistor amplifier for the "grit". Take those diodes out, you get a boost. This circuit in particular has very flat frequency response, hence they call it "transparent".... but it's nothing more than a basic signal amplifier - and a not-so-good designed one. But using the right transistors, with the right gain, it works.

@@toneelectronix very cool. Sounds like an LPB1 with an added Gain knob.

@@PJandtheBeard yes, almost. The lpb-1 is more "refined" with 4 resistors (instead of 2) for biasing the transistor in a way to be less dependable on its gain. A more "inteligent" design, let's say 😉 And yet, even the lpb is super simple circuit. But if it sounds good, good it is right?

@@toneelectronix not that the Emerson Paramount sounds good, but isn't it closer to an Electra than the em-drive is?
