I slept terribly for over a year because i had more than 20 stuffed animals and I had to make room for them all in my single bed, which meant i had less than 40% of my bed. I'd often wake up because I fell out of bed, or had to make sure I hadn't pushed any of them off the bed or down the crack next to the wall. I was probably 5 or 6, and this movie made me so afraid of not treating my toys with respect and love.

@@milton7763 Toy story 4 Is not unnecessary in any kind of way; Far from it. As a lifelong toy story fan [Toy story 2 is my favourite movie of all time :-) I can truly tell you what’s more than upmost authority that 4 it’s actually better than 3 in literally every way, to the point where 3 it’s actually more unnecessary, especially when you consider that literally everything important that happens is recap at the beginning of 4, Let alone That pretty much every Central character development was pretty much already established in the previous two, heck there are quite a few people who think that 3 is a rehash of 2.4 is a lot more substantial and poignant as Woody got to face the greatest fear that he’s ever had [he even downright exclaims it in 1] Of being a lost toy, And like everything else that he’s done in the previous movies, he truly sets an example for what the toys should do in/if put in that kind of situation in this case what would happen if they ever come across another kid/situation like Barney who doesn’t want/need them anymore plus the fact of what’s gonna happen when Bonnie grows up?The fourth movie exemplifies and fully embrace The fact since They are toys that come to life then like quite frankly we as people we are the power to be independent and go out on our own way to do what we truly want in life and not be bound by what other people want to even if it is our main overall purpose, let alone the fact that Woody and all the other Lost toys are still going to be loved and played with just not in the conventional way. How on earth can anyoneThink that’s a necessary, especially compared to the one true unnecessary Pixar sequel which is Incredibles 2?

@@MrPoopaloops THANK. YOU. I still love TS3, but when it comes down to it, I think it has the least to say thematically of the four movies. So it always bothers me when people say 4 ruined it and was unnecessary. 3 has more excitement and thrilling sequences, more obvious pearl clutching and tearjerking moments. But 4 is a smarter film in terms of actual themes and ideas, and pushes forward the story in a mature and logical way, much like 2 did. I love 3 for showing us the story of what happens when the toys have to leave Andy, but if I was forced to pick the truly "unnecessary" entry, it would be 3 over 4.

@@milton7763 I was scared shitless that the fourth one was going to be nothing more than made for money, still made by the geniuses at Pixar, but with no purpose. But when I was watching it in the cinema I realised that it was a story about post parental breakdown, displaying the terror a parent can place on themselves when they want their old life back too little, that parent being Woody. The second one definitely goes a lot harder into those existential themes. Woody's fears of being abandoned are dug back up and put on center stage by the damage of his arm and Jessie's own story. When he's told that he's going to be sold to a toy museum where he's going to be looked at and admired forever he feels like this is a better option, because in that way he will never experience the pain of abandonment again. However, when Buzz and the other toys show up, he reminds him of what he learned in the first movie, and Woody decides that it's better to experience that love and making Andy happy, even if it will inevitably end. In short, it's better to live your life in full, experiencing all the heartache and suffering along with the love and joy, than it is to live a long, numb, and empty one.

im biased bc i really really love toy story but i think this is your best video to date. i have always seen woody as the most important aspect of the franchise (bc, well, he is) but i have rarely if ever heard such a compelling argument about buzz's own delusions and where they may come from. i think being aware of a deeper characterization of him tho makes his flanderization throughout the series the more disappointing tbh also something i do want to add is how good the first, second and fourth movies are with dealing with a character who the audience can clearly see and understand why he does the things he does, while also remaining critical of it and allowing him to change his mind. woody undergoes really strong mindset changes throughout the movies and i really admire how that was made in a way that was emotionally resonant but also accessible for all audiences. i think my problem with the third movie then might be with how it seems to want to have it both ways -loyalty is the most important thing in your life, but also you need to move on from previous relationships, even if you dont know how, even if its not the focus of the story -with woody learning to get over andy in a very strange way. in a sense the second movie already positions the idea of woody being able to willingly give up his place as andys toy for the greater happiness of his friends, but the third one posits this as a character flaw and shows that his blind loyalty is what makes him who he is... except when in the end he decides almost on a whim that he wants for the rest of his friends to be taken to another home and decides to leave andy himself. even when he was already looking forward to what i assume is a similar experience to that he had as the toy of either one of andys parents (since its mentioned hes a family heirloom)... but im just rambling now 😅

Love this. Too often I hear that these movies are about friendship and childhood, which is true and all - but the *main* thing this series has always been about to me is overcoming the fear of abandonment. It's amazing how they made three sequels to this, all unplanned, and had them tie together into one cohesive story/arc so perfectly. I think people miss out on how deep the first movie is due to the fact it doesn't have the tearjerker moments of its sequels. Lots of good stuff that ties together thematically that you pointed out, tons of stuff I never noticed

Craig Good, the supervising layout artist on Toy Story, actually explained why Pixar didn't bother answering why Buzz froze despite his delusions: "Buried in one of the many, bloated, rejected versions of Act 1 was Buzz Lightyear reacting right after a freeze with a line like, "Interesting local custom." In the end it didn't really need to be acknowledged - part of the fun for an audience, especially in the first act, is figuring out the rules of the world. It's just a rule. This reminds me of what I used to call "bee in the woods" questions. At one point while working on The Adventures of André & Wally B. we had a heated discussion about how the stinger should look. I asked, "So if a real giant bee with an eighteen-inch stainless steel stinger were flying through the woods, it would look just like this?" The answer to most bee in the woods questions is: it's just a cartoon."- Craig Good's answer to a question on Quora

@therealCrazyJake

I think another reasonable explanation for the “plot hole” of Buzz freezing could be that he hasn’t become self aware of it enough to control it. Hear me out: Woody is a toy from the 1950s, and has known for quite a while that he is a toy rather than an actual cowboy, whereas Buzz, who is suppose to be a very newly produced toy, still believes himself to be the character of his design, lacking the self awareness of his instincts as a toy; because of this lack of awareness, Buzz would not be in complete control of what is inherently built into him by design. Given that Buzz gains a lot more control over his freezing in the sequels, it would make sense that the self awareness of a toy gives them a higher control of their impulses. Your theory, however, does work pretty well, considering what we know of older drafts and deleted scenes from the movie: there is one deleted scene on the DVD that shows Buzz being fully aware of being a toy, with Woody telling him that Andy likes toys that can fly, which excites Buzz, and right when he’s about to attempt flight, Woody spins around the globe Buzz is standing on, so that he hits the wall and falls behind the desk, with Woody callously remarking that Andy “also likes toys he can find.”
@buzzytrombone4353

That deleted scene wasn't part of the movie it was a test to see the capability of CGI at the time done at Pixar. For them to look at it an examine the capabilities of their hard drive.

Toy Story is a very special movie. My friend and I discussed it not long ago and I said it works because it tells a very human story. Disney films at the time felt like they were just fun movies but Toy Story tackled real life emotional challenges that anybody could face, like jealousy. For example, I love The Lion King and it deals with jealousy but I don't relate to it as much as I do with Toy Story. When I watch the other Toy Story films I feel they tackled other themes well but it didn't feel as authentic to me. But maybe I just related to the themes more in Toy Story.

Hey MLTT, One thing I think that leans heavily into the abandonment, wanted/unwanted, self worth themes among the toys is the almost Hemingway level subtle plot implication that Andy's dad has left the picture at the beginning of the film. Other viewers have commented that his father is never seen or heard from, his mother isn't wearing a ring, and moving homes often takes place after parents divorce. This sort of thematic backdrop lays the groundwork for all the emotional conflicts Buzz and Woody illustrate as told in your video. The idea runs both ways as well when you consider the possibility that Buzz and Woody serve as surrogate father figures for Andy. Anyway, awesome video man. Keep up the good work!

Although clearly he doesn't seem to care at first whether he replaces him as Andy's new favourite or a new guy like Buzz which turns out to be the case & he proceeds to provoke Woody's own jealousy & bitterness whenever he gets the chance ( as long as Woody comes second place whatever ). great video and great movies. I've always said many of the Pixar films were very deep. That said, the Toy Story movies are somewhat misandrist with respect to humans. We see almost no positive human males: Sid's father (or possibly house male) is only physically present at best, Andy's father is only alluded to in the second movie (I interpret it as he died), In the second movie Al is basically a greedy criminal, In the fourth movie the father is basically the stereotypical inept male. To be fair, Andy's mom and Al are the only adult humans that get any exposition. Also, to be fair, the movies are full of positive and negative male roll models, as one would expect from heroes and villains in any story.
