The thing BD has done really well is keep a sense of visual identity in their uniform design. Sort of like you can look at any of the Hawthorne Caballeros or Madison Scouts costumes of recent years and know instantly who they are. Also that 1976 show rocks, Legend of the One Eyed Sailor is awesome and the tenors used those cool looking North drums. Also “My Spanish Heart” is one of my top shows of all time next to Star of Indiana 91 and 93.

The Bluecoats dominance this year is the result of many years’ of investment into their vision. Think about it; we are always curious about what they’re up to, what whacky costumes, effects, repertoire choices they’re putting on the field. When are you ever curious about the Blue Devils? Never, because you know what their show will contain, what they’ll play, how they’ll drill, what will be good (color guard), what will be boring (repertoire). I hope that this will shake up the BD organization and prod them out of their rut. Honestly, it overdue. They got a huge post-covid organization bonus, when other corps were just struggling to field. Now that the activity is on better financial footing, there will be better competition. In fact, the other corps poised to win soon is the Boston Crusaders, who have also navigated the “new” style of marching, drill, electronics with fresh ideas. I can honestly see a couple of years of trading off between the Bluecoats and Crusaders earning championships, while BD and Crown figure out where they want to go, how they want to move forward, because both corps really need something new. Phantom feels very centered, they’re very clear about what kind of show they want to do, and it’s not necessarily to win by itself.

I am always curious about BD show. just because they dont have unique uniforms doesn't mean every show is the same. I find BD as a corps not be to be any less interesting than coats or phantom. They push the activity in equally impactful ways edit: To be clear, I dont think they impacted more than bluecoats , but the way you are describing it is unimaginative and boring, when thats a really unfair opinion

@@dhdusidjdjso I tend to believe that yes BD doesn't do the 'same' show every year, but it follows a very similar line for every show they've had in the past decade, whether it be recycling material, uniform similarities, drill callbacks or whatever we just want something 'fresh' that doesn't have to reference a past year. They don't field the same show, they field the same style every year and I want something new and fresh.

I would agree on your later statement saying that the design staff hasn’t innovated as much lately. I think the bigger issue is complacency in the membership. Sitting in the rehearsal in Dallas with Ivan, we were both shocked by the lack of urgency amongst the members in that rehearsal, and after talking to a few of the members, that seemed to be a bit of a common theme leading up to then. A chill vibe makes the organization great, but that chill vibe also knows when it’s time to up the intensity from within the membership when things are getting too loose. Hopefully this is a wake up call to them about taking all days and rehearsal vibe more seriously early on. If the staff can restart the culture in 2022 from a dead halt and no vets, they can easily turn the culture around now. I have no worries about going into next year. Scott will design a work of art, and the staff will prepare the leaders to get the membership back on track.

As far as the BD dynasties go, I would be hesitant to say one were over by placing 3rd. They still remain the odds on favorite for the next gold just based on past performance. There is no other organization that has consistently produced top productions. Bloo is without a doubt the heir apparent of the next dynasty. 2024 showed a Bloo firing on all cylinders. There wasn't a weak section in the corps. That is how BD has dominated in recent years. If they continue that, I could see a good bit of gold in their future. Since they have placed second 3 times and then a gold in the past 4 judged seasons, (and 2019 a loss of a championship by a hair) it could be said there are already some overlapping dynasties here. If, instead of scores, you were going with most iconic shows, I would venture to say we are well into a Bluecoats decade of dominance. All that being said, I hope we are over dynasties for a while. I hate to see seasons like 2022 and 2023 when the top battle was for second place because it was a given BD was going to take it. I think the activity is more exciting when gold could go to any of a few corps going into Indy. I would also love to see a BAC gold in the near future. Great video, as always. Kudos.

I don’t think you can pronounce a dynasty dead until we see what they do next year. Even Bama failed to make the playoff between their 2017 and 2020 titles. I think you nailed it that DCI is changing, and to be honest I’m not sure I’ll be watching much anymore as a result. I’ve loved BD especially and DCI since I first watched finals on PBS in 1987. I’ve seen a lot of changes and made my peace with them: 2017 is one my all time favorite BD shows and maybe my favorite since 1993, which I see as the break from the classic BD and the fantastic open front unis and pure jazz. But these last two years I’ve struggled to remain interested. I barely watched any shows those two years except BD. And I never really got into BD this year. The costumes, the field theater, the props (which seemed to be toned down for a lot of corps this year)…it doesn’t do it for me. I love in Atlanta so I’ve done Murfreesboro and Atlanta for most of nearly 15 years, including rehearsal when I got back to Atlanta. This year, when I got back from Murfreesboro, I honestly just didn’t care to go to rehearsal or the show. In nearly forty years, I’ve never been this apathetic. Next year is looking like maybe no shows as I return from vacation the day of Atlanta. Other than COVID 21 and 22, I’ve been to one show each year since 1989, except for 1996. It makes me sad to think summer may not include drum corps. But I get it. I’m older, and maybe it’s time to find a new summer passion. It was easier to book my trip and not have to worry about drum corps dates, so I guess that’s a silver lining. No matter what, do it up, Devils!! 22 in 25!!

I don't think the Blue Devils are going anywhere. Perhaps they will not win as often as they did from 2007 - 2023 but I am quite certain they will still win. The thing that keeps Blue Devils at or near the top year after year is caption strength. Very few corps will come out of the gate with top 3 quality in brass, percussion, guard, and visual proficiency the way BD does. Sure...you might beat BD in a caption or two but the average strength of those 4 performance captions helps keep BD near the top. Most corps, even really good corps, will have a weakness somewhere. Now I agree that visually it felt like BD did not stretch-out beyond visual ideas that they have been using over the past 5 or 6 competitive seasons. This and GE was an area where Bluecoats really shined this year. I think BD will explore some new concepts this year. Very excited to see where they take it. To be honest though, I still love so much of what they have done visually, especially from 2017 to now. Some people say rinse and repeat, but I say you can't just reinvent the wheel every year. It is important to adapt and modify things that are working, but I do think we will see greater change this coming season. If anything I do not think it was the visual program that hurt BD (though somewhat cluttered at times) but it was more the GE. In particular GE music. I felt the source music hurt them. The ballad was one of my favorites, but the other charts did not seem to convey the Romantic ideas that I heard Scott Chandler speak about before the season. The performers were still magnificent. The caption strength across the board was still mostly top 3. Visual may have been somewhat cluttered at times, but the source music and music GE just didn't bring home the ideas that I heard Scott speak about...with the exception being the ballad.
