I would say that Classic RO never estabilished the holy trinity as 'serious' as classic WoW/Everquest (and their clones). Thats because Ragnarok doesnt follows the "Tank and Spank" logic that composes most of the encounters in those games. The Tank was really meant to optimize both his damage mitigation and aggro holding (which could conflict in their gear/spec choices), the healer both the heal output and mana management (during a single fight), and the dps usually had the least to look at besides maximizing damage. This difference happens because although Ragnarok had many different functions/skills, it was basing itself in Diablo which has a much more aggressive/fast gameplay than WoW/EQ originally had. In Diablo a group of players are just spamming skills and cleaning many pack of monsters at the same time. Ragnarok did a great job in expanding the gameplay from Diablo, but it didnt took as much from EQ as WoW did.

That’s true, I didn’t think of the AoE emphasis. But, I think the main issue is that nowadays most classes do everything by themselves, alone. Any class, with cash shop overpowered items, can kill anything (maybe not some green aura mvps, but everything else). But you are right, I didn’t think how Ragnarok is similar, in a way, to Diablo.

Ragnarok was the best game I've played since I was a child, it's sad to see that its almost dead, but I can understand why and I agree with you, from the overpowered classes to the overpowered cash items, Ro started to shift into a game where everyone can do anything alone. In it's essence RO for me is a hard MMO, and trying to "fix" this, when imo it wasn't really a problem, was why the game started to lose players, and those who stayed started solo playing
@gamecitizen

You put it very well, they started fixing things that were not a problem. And not all of these changes had cash shop in mind. For example, they introduced the level restrictions (penality for drop and exp for mobs too many levels lower or above the player). But I wonder if a classic hard MMO could be truly compatible with the aggressive monetization system.
@rei2829

@@gamecitizen I've seen some servers with the max job being the OG 2-1 and 2-2 classes who handle this problem very well (imo), for example, items from the cash shop are purely cosmetic or in some cases lets you get some usables for level boost ,which I don't think it's bad, after all if someone just want to get faster to the part of the game where you can go farm or group up with someone to kill a MVP without the somewhat tedious level grinding they're in their right to do so.

I’m on my mid30s now and have children. I played Ragnarok in early 2000s and that was part of my best childhood memories. Back then, playing in a party is so much fun. I remembered one of the best place to party leveling were Magma Dungeon, High Orcs in-depth of clock tower and Majorous in-depth of cave in GH. You cannot withstand the mobs of monsters there without a proper party members consists of tank, support and DPS. I played as a Wizard and casting lv1 Storm Gust to crowd control mobs and do jupitel thunder for dps along with other Hunters doing the dps damage. Knights absorbing the high damages from the mobs. The best part of party leveling back then was you can chat with your party members while playing. I built so many friendships online with random people. Ragnarok was a MMORPG masterclass and I do believe if the developers just expanded the game horizontally with the new classes. And still treasured the sole foundation of this game which is the social online interaction between players this game would still be relevant to play. No question that ragnarok franchise is one of the sought after game to be adapted in many games.

Really good video. I agree with pretty much everything you talked about. I could probably make a response to it that's just as long as the video itself, but I'll try to keep it (somewhat) brief. First, a couple very small corrections. The video kind of frames the transcendent classes as the beginning of the downfall, but they were actually in the game long before Homunculi or Ninja / Gunslinger, so clearly Gravity was still adding cool stuff at this time. I also think the Transcendent classes are a very good way to do vertical progression, as they add a very significant amount of playtime (since you have to re-level from level 1) for a relatively small increase in total power. Also, while I'm also not a fan, I would also somewhat dispute the notion that the 3rd classes don't really add any interesting new mechanics. Ranger gets the Warg, which gives them a number of interesting abilities but they have to choose between the Warg and the Falcon. Sorcerer gains the ability to summon minions, making them play somewhat like a summoner class. Soul Reaper has a unique resource system that makes that class play very differently from most things before it. Then there's also the Summoner (Doram), which is unique in all sorts of different ways. The main thing I don't like about most of the third classes is that I feel like instead of expanding upon the identity of the second classes, they simply upgrade or replace them in most ways, and the game's balance was never really able to accommodate characters with that level of power. In terms of the trinity system, in Ragnarok I feel it's always been the case that most classes could fill two of the three roles. The Knight can tank and also does high DPS. Crusader is a tank that also heals. The Priest can be built into a surprisingly competent tank. The monk is a DPS that can heal. The Assassin can DPS and tank. Wizard and Hunter kind of only DPS, but they have strong control effects that can substitute for a tank in some party compositions. And so on. This is interesting because it gives you the choice to either build specifically for one of the two roles or try to do both, which allows for many interesting team compositions. The Alchemist is uniquely able to do all 3 roles with the aid of their Homunculus, though they are by far the most difficult to play due to the need to micro both the main character and the homunculus, and in a game with the level of chaos that Ragnarok can have having to play 3D chess when other classes are playing checkers does matter. The Summoner also has the ability to do all three roles but usually must choose only 2, but their unpredictability is an asset. As you mentioned, this system has a boatload of depth and is key to the appeal of the game. The part where you talked about the social aspect of the game and the decline of MMORPGs was the part I found the most insightful. Something Ragnarok did really well was that it worked as a kind of "drop in, drop out" multiplayer experience. If you look at a heavily quest-driven game like World of Warcraft, it's much harder to play that game with your friends, because unless you're at the exact same point in the quest chain, there's not much you can do that will be useful to both players. Ragnarok very specifically avoids this problem through its design. Obviously, one way it does this is through the lack of traditional quests, but the equipment and card systems play into it as well. In Ragnarok, equipment does not really have a level. In most MMOs, equipment is only useful for a few levels until you find gear that's simply far superior, but in Ragnarok, a good piece of gear is simply any piece of gear that has been upgraded a lot of times. This means that an item like Slotted Shoes is always valuable, regardless of your level. The same goes for the card system, cards always have value regardless of your level. This means that even if two players are not at the same level, they can probably find something to do together that both of them benefit from. You can go to an easy dungeon where the weaker player gets good exp, while the stronger player can kill the enemies en masse to try to gain valuable items. I remember when I used to play with my friends, people would just jump on and send a message like "hey does anyone want to go to Sphinx" in guild chat and you could usually find someone to accompany you. It really made the game a cool place to hang out. But times change. There's far more competition in the online gaming space now, which means your friends probably aren't all playing the same game anymore. I've found that now, when I'm playing a game, I'm typically only playing with one friend so games that lack that kind of "drop-in, drop out" aspect aren't a big deal anymore, with only two people's schedules to work around, playing a game together for its entirety is quite feasible. This is also something Ragnarok actually doesn't do that well. Doing challenging dungeon raids in RO is only part of the game, there's also a fair bit of more slower-paced gameplay when you're trying to farm an item or gather materials for crafting and this is not super exciting for two people, you would typically have done this type of content solo back in the day. You also need quite a few people to do War of Emperium, which is in many ways the highlight of the game and the main thing you tend to work towards. So it's not surprising they sort of changed the focus of the game to adapt to the new way people were playing it, even though I think pretty much everyone would agree that it's not nearly as special as it once was. This is also probably why there hasn't been another Ragnarok Online since then, and why many people still consider it to be the best MMORPG of all time. It was a product of a time that has come and gone. We'll always have the memories, though.
@gamecitizen

Thanks! You said many things that, actually, I think you might be right and I didn't mention in the video. You are definitely right regarding how 3rd classes did change the combat mechanics. I still maintain my criticism, that the 3rd classes are too focused on dealing damage, but the way to deal damage has changed. Actually, one could argue that this diversity in how to kill monsters (and this includes the 3rd classes gameplay mechanics) is one of the strongest points of the game, and perhaps one of the few aspects of the game that are still strong, even after all these years. Your commentary gave me a lot to think about! Thank you!

I recall I had a freaking manual on how to go around the game (leveli g up guide basically). 3rd jobs just encouraged solo play. However, the game itself is pestered with other problems that made it lose its touch compared to current MMOs. Still, there are live and well private servers with committed communities that keep it going. But I guess I'm old already. Console video games and Board games makes up for more worthwhile investment.

The main problem with RO is the early classes are designed to be played with other people. This means as most people past the early phase, new players have a very high barrier of entry to the game to progress to the next phase. And RO isn't upfront with the stats, classes, and skills for each roles, so new players have difficulty getting into the game long enough. It has the same problem as veteran players progress into the game, more and more old players quit RO, this leaves the existing players having harder time to progress even though they really want to progress into the game even if its by themselves. So the devs designed it to be more solo friendly, so it slows down the rate of existing players leaving due to difficulty to progress. The whole problem stems from them making it pay to play instead of having a better monetization model like wow. They should make the players invest financially into the game with something more tangible like guild, items and so on, and not just to play the game, when they feel that their have invested a lot into the game, they will feel much more reluctant to leave the game.

Back then, pro Blacksmith players could solo MVP's. Smart Hunter players could kill the infamous Wanderer monster solo with trap managing. Assassins were the ultimate PvP machine and so much more... Each class had its corner where it excelled. 2-2 Classes gave the game that extra flavor, like you mentioned in the video. Rebirth Classes expanded on that - that was Ragnarok Online at it's peak. Then came renewal . . . And 3rd Jobs - this is where RO started to decline. Gravity unbalanced everything at this point, and it became worse and worse ( hello guillotine cross, who reaches the damage cap *LOL*). At this point, Monster HP skyrocketed because gravity was too lazy to tone down the damage and make it just a bit better than rebirth jobs (like rebirth jobs did back then). And dont get me started on the cash shop - this was the final nail on the coffin imo. I never played the Renewal version of the game again after leaving EuRO, because it simply sucks. Now I'm working on my own server to recreate and rework the content ( started alpha last month /heh), to the point how RO should haven been ( imo ). I don't fear Gravity coming after me since they don't give a shit about the European region, thanks to data management rules. Cheers from an old EuRO player from the Rock'n'Roll Guild

The game is all about MONEY MONEY MONEY!!! and full auto play, auto grind and auto farm but yeah I agree with you i'm 26 years old i work 9 hours a day and doesn't have much time to play that's why I accepted playing this auto play mmorpg and play while watching movies, tv series or anime.

So, each server has its own installer. For iRO, you have to check their website, for example. But official servers are region blocked. Depending on where you are, and which server you want to play, you might need a VPN. I play with VPN (I used NordVPN for a long period of time, then ExpressVPN, now I am using Surfshark).

How i missed the good ol days of partying up and power leveling, going into dungeons low level classes have no business getting into 😂 jumping into Byalan Dungeon (undersea tunnel) level 4 where there are plenty of aggro fishes, those with wind weapons do the damage the rest supports the dps and protects the healer going to Orc Dungeon level 1 getting mobbed by undead and bats/flies adventuring into Pyramids level 2 and 3 where archers can snipe undeads and acolytes can heal bomb risking it all in Glast Heim graveyard behind the high level players, we just try to get a shot in before those Wraiths, Skel & Zombie prisoner dies. but the hunter flies are a bane of our existance hahaha 😂 I agree with the introduction of the 2-2 jobs it started becoming more of a solo leveling experience especially when I tried out a GC sader and combo monk. Slowly but surely it started a trend of changing the game experience, party play becomes only needed for serious boss hunting or guild dungeon expeditions. I miss the good ol' RO me and my friends reminisce the thousands of hours spent into the game the adventures and misadventures we got into. Sadly by the time 2009-2010 came around the game became quite boring for us and started to drift away from it. Even nowadays those mobile versions just cannot capture the same magic of the original Ragnarok Online. it may copy the look and some of the gameplay but not the same experience and magic. I am not wearing any nostalgia glasses but its just not the same anymore. Looking back even before the release of 2-2 I had experimented with a Battle Priest but still played a whole lot with a party of Battlesmiths and a forging Blacksmith that leeched from us. It was plenty of fun the forger gave us plenty of potions and even sp recovery, kept close to my BP to keep safe while the Battlesmith shared his buffs and we started tearing it up with the enemies. the bond shared was something special. Ragnarok Online was truly something special. 🎉🎉🎉

I've been writing a script for a video on why I've been playing a game that is 20 years old. On my part, I think it has to do with some nostalgia, but also some connection with a part of myself that I might have lost, that childhood/teenager part. Back then, I had no friends and I had a really hard time at school. So, playing Ragnarok was a escape from reality already back in 2005-2009. Of all game genres, I think MMORPGs had a larger impact on the young players' lives. Almost like it became part of our identity.

Pre-renewal, for me was the prime of the game. Especially the release of the transcended class, enhancing the potential of the previous classes and the trinity and the addition of unique classes especially the soul linker. 3rd class was just a meh but the release of 4th classes just the death of it all. The 3rd jobs could still be relevant if they could just enhanced the game mechanics, adding more challenging contents and stories, more immersive system that the new jobs could still utilize their new skills and abilities. Take for example, new grinding spots for party... higher lvl grinding spots are quite challenging, that's why AB's skills are better suited for such situation as Culuceo Heal is more convenient for healing multiple party members at once, and so goes for the rest of the jobs, Royal Guard got better tanking skills, Warlocks got better AoE, etc. However it ended there. Other than that theres nothing new about the game that could utilize the relevance of the new jobs. They could've added contents that pushes the limit of players immersion of their characters.

Argh... the "third classes" Always hated them. It might sound silly, but the poor graphics and the extended "recycling" of already existing templates/graphics in the game, to design the skill of the 3rd classes, is what boosted my dismay... I mean, c'mon, with all that money, they really could not hire a team to draw some 2D animations? This gave me a feeling that never for a single hour left my impression of the game: that the company was lazy. ... this feeling followed me until I discovered League of Legends and naturally got extremely engaged by it, and slowly stopped playing Ragnarok. ... I never uninstalled it. ... but so much things got added into the game, that now I feel like I'm too far behind. But yeah, I really wanted to experience that good old feeling of playing ragnarok again... sadly this odds of this happening are very slim. Maybe I could become very rich, and pay for the companionship of some people, right? ahah anyways

Counter point on 2nd part: Soul Linker 3rd class pretty much becomes necromancer. But that comes with negative impact due to dark element being crap at end game. 3rd class improved and adds build imo. For example, knight branched into sword AoE, spear single target, or dragon tanker. Each patch adds something new to it. What killed it is IMO 4th class due to damage inflation design. Every class could solo everything. Every class could tank everything. And every class have tools for buffing and debuffing for any content.
@gamecitizen
Жыл бұрын
That's true, you added some good points. The 3rd of Soul Linker is like a necromancer, though I haven't played with it yet to be honest. And it's true that 3rds added new builds. Actually, the game still has sooooo many different builds! It's one of the best things about the game, and it' still very much alive! But much before the 4th classes, which haven't even been added to official servers like iRO or bRO (where I play the most), the overpowered cashshop items killed the group play. The bad thing is that 4th classes will just add on that, making classes even more solo-friendly. Maybe this isn't so bad, in the sense that the game is already solo-play for the most part, and Gravity just embraced this completely...
@LordDonkara

Rn the age of solo play ended xd, for example, biosphere depth, actually I would say that there is like 2 jobs that could do it alone, and there is a high possibility that they can't. Hall of Life forces you to look for a party because of the difficulty.
@gamecitizen
Ай бұрын
I do hope so! My fear is that they are adding these new hardcore contents in order to justify selling even stronger cash shop items. Powercreep. But maybe they are becoming aware that the game needs a bit more of care. In a way, I found my own way to play with others. I found a group of people that likes to play without using cash shop gear, and it has been quite a lot of fun! Actually, my next video is about this, about how I found a way to enjoy playing ragnarok again.

@@gamecitizen You can actually play just fine using the gear from biosphere, depth and depth f2, you don't need cash shop gear to enjoy the game, the items that you can get grinding are enough. The thing is that biosphere f2 is almost impossible to solo unless you have enough redus to survive, the key to farm there is to survive the stupid amount of dmg the mobs there deal. Also, I must say that playing kRO is not fun for me, I kinda hate it, I enjoy playing private servers that are kRO-like but properly balanced.
@charlesmanapat5418
Жыл бұрын
Yeah. No one anymore creates a pub which reads "LF > 70-79 even share need FS/tank". It was actually the entire balanced system that brought our hearts to the game. No class was better than another; everyone had a role in a party/guild. I remember I was just a starting player, and finding guilds was still easy to do even though my equipment were just npc bought. Guilds recruited players NOT for the equipment they had but for the "performance" their character's role could contribute for the guilds. I also observed the same. When OP'ness and cash power had begun entering the equation, people slowly started leaving the game. In the Philippines, from the staggering 12,000 denizens of Chaos server (and that was only in one server!) the population went downhill little by little. I never regetted playing Ragnarok Online. It will always have a special place in my heart.

In my case I used to play Private hispanics Mid Rates servers 'cause it was a quick way to play BG and WOE (And My english wasn't enough at that time), but the decadence quickly started with the 3rd Jobs, most of the servers got broken in bugs and even if they didn''t implemented the new clases, it did it the items wich unbalanced some classes. Also, another abusive behaviour were the guild packs, the private servers used to give items to guilds to promote their enter to their servers, but with less people playing, a particular big guild started to exploit that aspect around the hispanics servers (Cause they were too noob to be competitive in English ones) and monopoliced the servers and the item griding, killing several servers in the process
