This video follows the Sierra Northern’s “Hill Job” westbound between Sierra Rock in Jamestown and Keystone. The video was shot over a period of 2 days between June and December of 2020. The trains are both powered by two ex-UPY Gensets. The first train you will see was shot on June 16, 2020 and begins with the crew picking up a hopper full of ballast at Sierra Rock. The Sierra Northern has a siding at this location and periodically they will drop off two bay hoppers here to get loaded with gravel that they use for ballast on their work trains. The power on this train is SERA #2620 and #51. 2620 has an interesting paint scheme and is in the UP colors, but the red locomotive number on the cab has been replaced by black colors and “SERA” was placed above the locomotive number, also in black color. We follow this train as it departs for its westbound journey for Oakdale. The engineer gives me a friendly horn salute after blowing the horn at the crossing. I later pick up another “Hill Job” at Highway 49 in Chinese Camp on December 21, 2020. This is a shorter train powered again by #2620 and this time #56. I will follow this train as it picks up three loaded center beam cars at the Sierra Pacific Industries lumber mill in Chinese Camp. During these switching operations you will hear the radio traffic if the crew. Once the brake test is complete, I follow the train west and parallel it as it climbs Chinese Hill into the Red Hills Recreation area of western Tuolumne County. The Red Hills are a famous location on the Sierra Railroad where many western motion pictures were filmed using the Sierra Railroads steam engines, which are now operated to haul passenger excursions trains at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown. I close this video with the train crossing J59 or “La Grange Road” at the Keystone lumber mill. The engineer will give a friendly wave as the train travels by and into the setting sun. This journey takes you through several landscapes consisting of rolling hills covered in oaks, farmlands and the Red Hills covered in pine and sage. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the train as it winds its way through California’s gold country. Please remember to hit like, subscribe and add comments. Thank you for watching!
