Mike Oliver Talking of batteries, I still get flashbacks of my Neveready bike lights that were neither bright nor trustworthy and had a knack of going out when biking at night (street lighting was a bit sketchy back then). Worse was when your parents got you a bunch of rechargeable batteries and assumed the problem was solved. Rechargeable battery tech in those days was terrible, so you couldn't use them in anything more advanced than a flashlight, but try telling that to the parents who just shelled out for a battery charger and a bunch of worthless batteries!
@graemedavidson499
5 жыл бұрын
Andy Lundell Indeed! I remember buying rechargeable NiCd batteries from Maplin in their early days of ScFi theme art covered catalogues. They took an age to charge and there were few things suitable for them. 10 of them ended up in a Realistic handheld CB radio, an equally regrettable purchase. Flashlights were notably dimmer and the batteries always seemed to be flat when needed. Thankfully batteries like today’s Eneloops are genuinely rather useful with devices supporting the lower voltages. I don’t miss the days of leaving tired old batteries beside the fireplace to breathe some more life into them!

I had a red table top that I wish I could remember the name of. One of the few benefits of having a penny pinching dad was that we had a small selection of variable voltage ac/dc adapters so I could play to my hearts content. The table top came to me vIa my Aunt who 'borrowed' it from my Uncle. I wasn't complaining, but the impression I got was that she was taking first and asking later lol. I can't remember if it took C or D batteries, but I only ran it on batteries the once and that was when it was handed to me at her house/flat. When those batteries ran out, out came the adapter and I was tethered to a wall.
