That seems like it was ages ago. What in the world happened. This team plays with a loser’s mentality, the current culture of this organization is garbage. Since our Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 2012, we have TWO SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS IN 12 YEARS 😡 (our run to make the playoffs in 2018 and last year beating the Rangers in 7). Absolutely unacceptable. This team is a disgrace. Our leaders don’t step up, our coaches are ineffective, and if I see Luke Hughes drop the puck back during our power play entry one more time I am going to have a freaking ulcer. I can go on for hours 😞 thanks for the video Eck, i was doing such a good job controlling my anger with this team until i saw this haha

Well, so they lost Hamilton (injury), Severson, & Graves (free agents), all experienced D-men, & Sigenthaler injured for over a month exposed their remaining young D (Nemec, Hughes, Bahl) Miller & Marino's mediocre play at best. They then lost their best faceoff guy in McLeod and another D Foote through legal issues. Haula not as good on draws and he Lazar & Nosek & Tierney are all just role players anyway. Goalies: 1.Vanicek melts down mid-season, 2.Schmid showed some youthful inexperience after a pretty good playoff run last year 3. Daws is promising but also young/inexperienced. Hischier & Hughes were out for patches of the season, as other teams have learned that they couldn't stand up to physical play and targeted them, and Brendan Smith (sometimes D, sometimes wing, but always slow) and Bastian were the only ones to step up for the others and the latter got his arse kicked recently vs. the Rangers and has yet to return, and Smith also has been injured many times. Meier too has been injured, eventually returned and up until recently has been nearly invisible as a "power forward". Bratt & Toffoli have been the most consistent performers all season offensively not named Hughes & Hischier, but Mercer went from a streaky scorer last year to very limited flashes this, and Palat only seems to play well during the playoffs. Youngster Holz started well & has been silent as of late. Coaches: Green is no Burnette as far as offensive schemes, Lindy is way past his prime, & it goes without saying they need a whole new coaching staff after this season. GM Fitzy went from the cat bird seat last summer to the hot seat now- lets see if he can eventually pull off a deal for a legit #1 goalie, & give Daws or Schmid a bit more time to develop.

I don't think they're as far off as it seems. Probably between this season and last season. Need a coach, a goalie and some defensive structure (and better luck with injuries). Couple things of note: 1) game 7, lol (had to gloat a little bit before I blew up on my team) 2) the lineups. Lindy is consistently mis-utilizing players. Timo Meier has fingers pointed at him yet he’s getting thrown in the bottom 6 every night. Holtz should not be on a fourth line with Tierney and Bastian. Jack Hughes being played at wing. It’s absolutely atrocious. Not to mention the way he’s playing a rookie goalie coming off a major hip surgery, it’s actually insane some of the stuff he decides would be best for the team each night 2) the powerplay. Completely stale. No movement. Same thing happens every time. Have a player explode to the blue line, drop pass, failed zone entry, nothing happens. 3) goaltending. I knew it would be the weak spot but I didn’t know it would be THIS weak. I have never had an opposing team and think “no way they score a goal here” this season. If the opposing team has the puck in our zone, it’s literal nightmare fuel that they will score against us. 4) defense. The entire defensive structure is absolutely horrendous. It leaves absolutely ZERO room for any mistake and with not one but TWO rookie defenseman you simply cannot run that type of system. The adjustments didn’t happen until AFTER the all star break and after a few games they reverted back to the old system. The losses over the offseason didn’t hurt as bad as people are making it seem. Severson was never known for actually playing defense and graves has regressed HORRIBLY on an even worse Pittsburgh team. 5) inconsistency. This team will look like the best team on God’s green earth just to come out the next game and forget what to do with the puck. Say what you want about Jack’s remark and call me biased but people DO pay to watch him play. He is behind only Bedard for jersey sales, has been blowing up every time he does anything all over the internet. The team is young and struggling but the kid is a superstar and he’s the first name you think about when playing this devils team. I think this is a good learning season for the team. After the 13 game win streak they were basically coasting, this will widen their eyes and let them know it ain’t that easy to win. They’re going to be very good for years to come. I am looking at this like Vegas a few years ago. They missed the playoffs due to poor goaltending, coaching, and poor play. This is what’s happening to this team. A new goalie, coach, and better attitude coming into next season will do wonders for this team.

The Devils were a doormat for about 10 years before last year. It shouldn't be a surprise they took a step back this year. The real test comes now to see how they recover. They're still young and have good players. They just have to fill in the weak spots, which is the really hard part, as we've seen over the last 8-10 years with Toronto & Edmonton. To go from 28th to 12th is the easy part because you're passing lousy teams. Going from 12 to 1 is hard because the teams you're trying to pass are good.

The only thing I hate is when people bring up the "People pay to watch me play quote" since they think he's being cocky and no one seems to be paying attention to the context. Arvidsson hit him up high with a pretty dirty hit that wasn't called. In the box Jack said something along the lines of "Do you play to hurt people? People pay to watch me play". And of course that got taken way out of context and people, even some Devils fans, think he's a cocky crybaby when that's not even close to being the case.

The Devils remind me of the Panthers in the mid 2010s. Young core emerges and takes the league by storm one year. The FO and ownership get excited. Bring some new names in and then the team completely falters the next season due to coaching and poor defense leaving the FO wondering which direction the franchise should go. I will say that barring an expansion draft out of nowhere, I think the Devils right the ship sooner than the Panthers did and be perennial playoff contenders down the stretch. But they are us in 2016-2017. Coming off a fantastic year the year prior and then having a disastrous year the next year due to injuries to key players and inconsistency. Like us that year, they will rip off a bunch of wins and then go on 6 to 7 game skids.

The goalie play has been bad. But the coaching/system is the issue. NJ does not play defense. Look at LAK's 1st goal today. NJ gave thjem a free break away from bad offense.

As a NYR fan if i were the NJD's right now i think they should just take a chance on OUR third stringer (Louie Domingue) who was called into PLAYOFF action in the past and was actually good, only played once this year but let in 1 goal in a win with a 96%+ save % - could be a diamond in the rough, look at what a lot of our backups have done over the years behind solid longtime G's like Richter/Henrik/Igor (Cam Talbot, Alexander Georgiev etc both starting elsewhere as far as im aware)

They need a coaching change and better luck with injuries next season. Losing Dougie REALLY hurt them on the blueline, too. While the netminding has not been stellar, it's hard to tell if that's the problem when they're getting no help from the team in front of them. Heads will have to roll and I think Lindy's out of a job whether he's a part of the problem or not.

everybody likes to take a kick at the teams that are in the basement, but you know what, not every team can be top 3 or 5 and they are learning, growing and finding your rhythm, doesn't happen over night nd fans and supporters have to stick with them, thats what gives them the drive to keep trying....

As a devils fan I totally agree with you. It’s just embarrassing to watch this team away and home. I am frustrated that we can’t do anything. The coaching, the defense it’s so bad. I have no faith into this team that we are going to make the playoffs. If we do, we are gonna lose the quarter finals. It’s so so bad.

I think with such a young team, it might help to keep on a veteran goaltender with some experience to start. He would keep the team in games competitively (within 1-2 goals) and hopefully have some insights to direct the defensive core, as well as mentor a new prospect (hopefully someone they'd keep long term). I don't know if Markstrom would be that guy, but you can't just throw a 20-year old between the pipes for the whole season. Goaltenders need a *long* time to grow into a good, consistent starter. I feel like too many NHL teams get way too overexcited over a young goalie who has a hot season, throw him in as their starter on an expensive long-term contract, and then get surprised when he burns out (I'm looking at my Blue Jackets on that one).

There’s probably a reasonable chance that Markstrom ends up in NJ. Travis Green was the coach of the Utica Comets run to the 2015 Calder Cop final and Markstroms goaltending was the key that got the Comets to the final. This was when Utica was the Canucks affiliate. If Green gets the nod as head coach I think you will see an emphasis on defense since that’s his NHL player career experience.

As a huge Devils fan from the age before Brodeur, this season has been rough. I believe one thing that makes it worse is the preseason hype that this might have been the Devils year. As a Devils fan we are sick of the Goalie merry-go-round. I truly do not blame the young goalies being thrown to sink or swim. Our young defensive squad has tightened up since early season. At this point, you can see the team frustration. The passing, skating, etc is not as confident as early season games. We needed a player like Markstrom a month ago. It may give the Devils a few seasons to find his replacement. Also Markstrom could fill the role as a leader for the young squad.

Losing graves hurt and it shows more this year. He's a good Pk and blocks shots. In my honest opinion I don't think Fitzgerald made a move this year because the asking price for a goalie is insane, but rightfully so it's in high demand. This team could be a whole different team if they acquire a D man, goalie and grit on the 4th line this off season. Along with a coaching change.

@@PhoenixRiseinFlame That sucks he's had a bad start. He had some shine through moments in NJ and was a PK machine for us. I really hope we just sell and right this season off and come back this offseason ready to play with our fixed issues. Goalie, d man, grit. That's the missing recipe for NJ to fight for a playoff spot next season.

As a Devils fan, I can’t put the blame on goaltending. Injuries and offseason moves dropped our average age of our defense to 17 years old and that inexperience has shown all season. Marino has been a shell of himself since Graves left and our rooks have left our goalies hung out to dry far too often. I also think our coaching staff has made some questionable decisions. Failure to adjust to in-game scenarios, personnel decisions, and flat out their system seems to be constantly exposed. No playoffs for us this year - post season is going to sting a bit.

Its been a perfect storm. Losing severson and graves without the cap space to pay them and retain others, not addressing goaltending, injuries, a young defensive core, a system that cheats up on offense too much. I think Lindy had similar issues with Dallas with this sort of system.

Blaming the goaltending is often the first refuge of a scoundrel. Coincidentally. the L.A. Kings are just now rebounding from their first el foldo of the season, and while many fans were blaming the goaltending, I saw a complete breakdown in MANY of the skaters' energy, toughness, teamwork, and just-plain character. The TNT guys Sunday were lauding the Kings as a legit playoff team this season, but who knows whether they'll fold again, for their post-foldo coach, pre -playoffs. If so, the next jump start both the Kings and the Devils might need is new GMs.

I expected a minor regression from last season after losing two veteran D-men and obviously Dougie's injury (plus Siegenhalter for a while) compounded matters, essentially relying on Brendan Smith, Colin Miller, a struggling John Marino and rookies (albeit future stars in Nemec and Luke). Also injuries to Nico, Jack and Meier didn't help. But goalies need to make big saves. The Devils could probably get by with average goaltending, but this season has been atrocious. Injuries can't be an excuse - they should still be a playoff team. Coaching is an issue this season. The PK hasn't been great, PP has been horrific since January and the mental mistakes keep happening. It's also dumbfounding why guys like Holtz don't get a chance in a top six role. Meier, Mercer, Palat, Haula all underperforming. The aforementioned Marino struggling on the blueline too. At some point, a coach needs to get the most out of his players and the Devils aren't getting that. At this point, an above average goalie must be acquired in the off-season or they'll waste yet another year of this very talented core.
