This is one of the very few movies that have to this day stayed with me. It is a truly scary movie. I saw it in the early 90's on tv one night and man oh man, it's scary. Modern writers and directors these days can learn from this one. These days the jump scare is so over used. Jump scares only scare you for a sedond and then you forget about it.

So true. Most movies these days are all jumpscares This I would classify as a Horror with jumpscares. It wakes up the fear in you. You feel the anxiety. One of the best out there. I was very young when I watched this. Did not understand the rape scenes as sex. But it put a fear in me which I remember until today.

always remember its not about sexual need in that kind of violent attack (between people) its about power and dominance. Also, parapsychologists are trained to be sceptics first and disprove any phenomenon by all logical possible means before they consider anything paranormal thats why they didnt believe her at first. There is a remake coming...i hope they dont ruin it.

You are right. Although, there's one thing I was realizing when I was editing this, that I didn't touch on in the reaction. She experienced so much misogyny and abuse in her life, starting with her father. I feel like if you take out all the horror elements, the theme of this movie is about Carla finding her strength after a lifetime of abuse and misogyny.

Barbara Hershey played the grandma in the Insidious movies. She still looks great. This movie came out when i was too young to see it but when i was, I couldn't find it ANYWHERE. Cool you made the effort to find it.

Kudos to you for looking at this, guy. I have it on blu ray. My relationship with this movie is tricky. On the one hand, I love it and admire it, and Barbara Hershey, (as you will see), is incredible. However, it also pi**es me off, and I have to skip certain bits, because they are too much. The awful thing is that it is based on a true story. You have my respect for braving this one. Fasten your seatbelt, you may need it. Atmospheric, chilling, but brilliant.

It is unfortunate that this film was so unfairly underestimated in its time, because of its theme, very taboo at the time, rape.

The real woman, Doris Bither, was attacked and raped by an unseen poltergeist back in 1974 or 75. She was, or still a single mother. She experienced the attacks, but they vanished later in life. There's a small biography about her case that happened in California.

One of my favourite movies and as you say the silence with no music and that thumping is more scarier than any horror or paranormal film I’ve seen, also based on a true story in California I think then she moved to Chicago and it followed her but the attacks became less frequent and less severe If I remember correctly

Born in 84, "renting" movies at your local Blockbuster was a thing of times. I've loved horror movies since childhood and ive seen most of them and as much as i enjoy horror, its rare that any actually scare me, especially modern horror. Newer horror is lacking that movie magic we see in 60s, 70s, 80s. I was 12 years old and my dad and i were at Blockbuster and i askec him to pick a really scary movie and this was the one he picked: this movie scared the crap out of me. When i was done watching ( by myself) i was so creeped out,i was so nervous even taking a shower. That makes this a good horror movie :) and that music and that pounding.

I don't understand why you thought this movie wouldn't scare you. Horror movies from the 80s and back are the ones that are really scary, even the mechanical special effects look more real for obvious reasons. Today's horror movies really suck, today's horror movies consist only of a series of jump scares and CGI effects that look totally fake, but without a solid story, as they are just cliché scenes.

Because I grew up in the 80's, and movies that I have seen from that time don't tend to scare me anymore: The Shining, Poltergeist, The Exorcist, Demons 1 & 2, Night of the Demons, Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Fog, George Romero's zombie movies, etc. Sure, they scared the crap out of me as a kid, but they don't now. There's also some horror movies from the 80's that I didn't see until I was an adult, and those didn't scare me either. I hope that gives you an idea of why I said that. If anything it's more a testament to how good this movie was, to still scare someone who has a mid-amount of desensitization to horror. And yeah, for sure there's a lot of more recent horror movies that are crap, but there's some good ones out there too.

I was watching it tonight. Then I saw your reaction and decided to check it out. I enjoyed this reaction. Me and my dad were sitting in the kitchen. We heard footsteps running up the ramp to the front deck. Then the front door burst open. Then a cold rush of air comes through the kitchen. Then the side door in the laundry room that was locked blew open hard. The interesting thing is the front door was open from the burst of air but the glass screen door was closed and locked. It sounded like someone ran up the deck and then through the house. Dad before he passed said he saw a woman sitting with me. He said she was in her thirties. He said one time when I dozed off in the living room chair he heard a voice from inside my torso say: I want out. I live alone now. I died last year. Doctors brought me back. I was gone long enough to cause brain damage but none happened. Also have an unknown muscle condition that creates toxins in me. The doctors said I have enough in me at times to kill five people but for whatever reason it's not bothering me. I know there's something after this life, I've seen it. I know I sound crazy but I've been to places that I don't believe anybody's supposed to go. I was given a task when I was gone. I was unconscious for over a month on life support. I can't tell you what I did but once I completed it I woke up from life support. I had a 3% chance of surviving life support. 11% chance of surviving the open heart surgery. And no chance to survive the type of heart attack I had. The doctors said it was unheard of to be dead as long as I was and not suffer any type of brain damage. I know when I got back I knew nothing in this world mattered. I know that when you leave this world you take love kindness and forgiveness and leave the rest. And the Egyptians the warning they had on the tombs about being negative in the afterlife is important. There are Gates just like people think about gates to heaven gates to hell. Everybody has to stand before those Gates. And there's a test that you have to pass. if you pass the gates open. if you don't pass the test you'll wish you had. It's an easy test. I can't tell you what it is you'll have to figure that out for yourself. but a warning , there is trickery before the gates. And I'll give you a hint. do not judge other people. concentrate on yourself when standing before the gates. Take only those things I told you to take. Heed the warnings. I know there's something else beyond this life. When I was told that I died I didn't believe no one. the doctors told me the medical records show that I died twice. Strange thing about my afterlife experience I had a moment of deja vu. I remembered the first time I made a mistake and I woke up in the hospital room just to find myself back where the afterlife dream or whatever began. Anyways. I've written about 86 pages in notes as to what all happened. I could write a book about it all. It happened a year ago in August 2023.

@mizmera Thanks for your comment! These are my thoughts exactly. I had received a comment on another reaction video involving another haunting, and the person who left the comment... let's just say he expressed a lot of disdain for me being scared by the movie. Your views are the same as mine. If the threat is something tangible, like another human, then that is something manageable. But the supernatural, you can't fight against that!

@@mikewatchesstuff I believe this is why I dont like serial killer movies. It does not nake me scared. Almost everyone somebody gets the better of the serial killer then tries to run away. Nope. I will make sure he never gets up again. And mostly it is set on chance. Somebody could beat the hell out of the person. You stand a chance. But what would you do in such a situation like in the movie? What can you do? You are defenseless. Ps. Something I have learned from the internet, youtube etc... dont take bad comments to the head. Wipe it off. The internet makes people very bold, because they are not facing the person. Looking forward to other reviews and thanks for replying to my comment.

@mizmera haha! You are very alike to me in that regard. I have said the same thing in my reactions to movies involving killers or serial killers. I will give credit to those movies though, in the sense that it's the gore that gets me. But yes, they always make stupid decisions and never do enough to put the killer down. Theres plenty of supernatural horror reactions on the channel if you're interested. And got more coming down the pipe for the month of October. Thanks again for dropping in!

There's a story somewhere here on KZitem, where a female anonymous person claimed they had a sleepover at their home with their best female friend, and anyhow the friend claimed she felt very uneasy in her best friend's home like something was there. Anyhow, I guess she was going to sleep in the guest room, anyhow the home owner went off to bed already, and the friend went to take a shower, and I guess something possibly demonic when she got out was waiting for her, then she was like in a trance and had no will anymore of her own, and it had her relax, then raped her in the guest room. After the assault took place, of course all the fear set in, and she ran to her homeowner friend in the other room. She had to go to the hospital, because she was bleeding really bad down below, because of the damage it caused from the rape. I don't know where that story is on here now, as it was being narrated on here. Of course, probably not a real story, but creepy even for fiction. Anyhow, seeing this on here reminds me of that story on here.

Why do poeple thin "OLD" movies from the 70/80s wont be scary, new horror films are not scary relyling on cheap jump scares, 80s movies were hardcore and the symth music is great for horr (see John C), I'm a 52 year old horror nut of any age and the best horror decades time were 30s, 50s, 70s and 80s and 2020s, yes A24 (the new Hammer) is makin an impression on the horror landscape ...
