For 25 years now, dir. Antoine Fuqua has been in the game now. I highly recommend 2 of his other classics: The Replacement Killers (1998), his directorial film debut with John Woo as executive producer. The 2016 remake of the western classic, The Magnificent Seven with Denzel leading an ensemble cast.

This is like a swan song for Denzel's Robert McCall. Someone suggested a prequel storyline for a younger Robert McCall with John David Washington starring to Antoine Fuqua and he said that's not a bad idea at all. That would be so good to see how Robert McCall became the superspy agent that he came to be. Also his wife and how much he loved her and exploring that relationship would be another incredible storyline.

I saw this one twice, Dolby Cinema & IMAX at AMC. Seeing how far McCall has come as this force of nature is quite the experience. Having him near death and defeat was hard to look at. I really thought he was gone for good. He reveals more of his invulnerablity as he gets to know the people of this Italy province. Seeing the best of them and the worse of them. Of course, McCall truly lives up to his name by dealing out the most major punishment to these mafia goons. Their boss getting it the worse is well-deserved. Onscreen with Dakota Fanning after 20 years since Man on Fire was some great conversational scenes and dialogue. The reveals of McCall's reason for being overseas and Fanning's agent character made me feel so good. That everything happens for a reason, no mistakes or consequences. A worthy finale indeed. Glad to have been along for it. Justice perfectly balanced as it should be.

Dakota’s performance is perfect for what she is playing. She is playing a young agent with zero field experience- she is attempting bravado because of her inexperience. Love the review, guys! I definitely had a really similar reaction. One thing I differed on was Dakota Fanning. I felt she fit her character perfectly, because she had enough experience to be a little cocky, but she was still fresh enough that she didn't have the wisdom of the world around her like Robert McCall. Loved how deep this movie went, and it will likely still be in my top movies of the year by the year's end.

You know, with everyone always asking McCall who he is, i bet he gets a perpetual sense of Deja Vu. What makes him the Equalizer is that he never does it for the Glory, he just simply is that guy, the one that always has Courage Under Fire, leaving behind a trail of dead badguys like some sort of Crimson Tide. He's always helping the Fallen and passes off the thanks he gets like it's so Much Ado About Nothing. He lays Siege to the evildoers like some sort of Bone Collector. When he sets his watch, you know the bad guys are Out Of Time.

@craiganderson5813

I'd rank them like this: 3. Equalizer 2 2. Equalizer 3 and then the 1st one is still the best one. My problem with this film is that they were promoting this film as "the Man On Fire reunion with Dakota Fanning & Denzel." But the issue is that they didn't even properly utilize Dakota's character. I was very disappointed that they basically gave her NOTHING to do the whole film. Honestly, it didn't feel like she was needed and I hated that.

Seeing this again threw the eyes of a review. it really stands out that Dakota was trying to bring out the character of her character's mother. if she had been her own person or showed her at least trying to fill in her mother's shoes instead of showing up and trying to show that she's just as capable took away from her character. better still if Denzel's interactions with her had a more mentor angle instead of confirming the work she put in like a teacher grading a paper. " you rolled back the camera's" was very " you took A plus B and for C " but imagine if she had presented another method he hand;t thought of and in Denzel fashion, he laughed about it and gave her a compliment then you got to see him use that new method. would have also reinforced he's not just becoming comfortable with what he's always done and made his peace with it. but would have shown that he can still learn and grow and that this was a new chapter for himself it's a sign of growth.

I agree. Antoine and Denzel created, in this trilogy, a study of "show, don't tell". I also agree SOME of the CIA cutaways were odd or unnecessary... but the bit where they raided the winery and found the drugs set up the connection for the drugs found on Marco's crew... and the connection between the winery and the Cammora rather than terrorists... however I think the bit where Dakota (i forget the character's name) was interrogating the one dude (off the books) was maybe meant to show she was chasing the wrong lead (terrorists).... but could have easily been left out altogether as it only raises more questions and answers none. In fact, the entirety of the CIA investigation could easily have been left out... it was an unnecessary plot arc... the only thing i can see is it introducing Dakota to the story... maybe Equalizer 4 will center on her??? And I've long held the theory that Creasy didnt die, he became the Equalizer. Check my math.

definitely not at the level of the other two movies in terms of action, but maybe above in terms of "why". if you would lay the three side to side, they would be: 1: "Because I can"... he kills the Russian gang to cover his own existence, otherwise he's gonna be exposed. 2: "Because I must."... he goes out of his way to *track* the assassins that killed one of his friends. 3: "Because it is the right thing to do."... he could have left the area and leave the case to both local AND international police, especially after tipping Emma, but he stays. that's largely what makes this movie: "It's the right thing to do". He was never meant to hunt the mafia or get involved at all... he just happened to be there, when someone was needing help. it all comes around right at the end: "I don't get it", "You will." either you get it, or you don't.
