Thanks for this , ,i've used a pole for thirty odd years & still found this very helpful.

A brilliant clear guide explaining how to choose that pole and avoid the hype and marketing pressure. Well done.

Bought a preston superium and carp top 2 snapped at where roller puller is fitted with 12lb carp on.Luckily i grabbed the end of the elastic and pulled it in by hand to the net. A lot of questions from preston as to whether i used it correctly so sent it off and did get new no.2 section. Been delay getting extra top kits due to demand too. Wish id gone for a maver or daiwa now

Great video and very informative. I never thought of some of the point raised. I agree that side pullers should be fitted as standard these days but unfortunately a few aren’t. Thanks

My new Preston Superium X70 pole had a fault in the no3 section which when it broke (1st time I used it) I lost my top kit. Preston count the top kit as a lost section and wont replace it, just a heads up if you thinking of buying a new pole.

I agree with almost everything you said. Except that weight is not important. Sadly, a lot of manufacturers trick you with the weight. the poles are generally not as long as it is stated, they reach their stated lenght with the mini extension at the back, BUT the weight is usually stated without this mini extension. In some lower end or mid-range poles these mini extensions can be 80cm up to 1 meter long and can weigh 400 grams. For example I got a browning hyper carp 200 fdl (fdl means that the pole is exactly the stated lenght without mini extensions) this pole is 772grams with its power kit on. it comes with a mini extension that is only 30cm! My previous pole, a Colmic Protocarp NX weighted 200 gramms more by default, and also had a mini extension that was 80cm long and an extra 360 gramms! The difference between the 2 even tho they are in the same price range is enormous! Anyway lads, TL.DR.: Check the weight of the pole, but also consider the lenght of the mini extension as it is the heaviest piece of your pole.

Always felt a stiffer somewhat ‘ringed’ carbon pole the best, if it can be light but still some what heavier and thick then i know it’ll last, like a maver abyss or diawa vertice, the newer poles seem so light they’ll break under abit of tension, sat on a shimano xta top kit just to unhook a good carp and it ended up shattering along with a few others that have just been handled, had a stiff top kit for the last 8 years now and landed everything on it.
I’ve got a Preston XS70 , would a Superium X70 be worth the upgrade .?

When buying a pole save yourself untold heartache and skip straight past any maver rubbish put your way. In fact if a shop tries to sell you maver quietly leave the shop and head to another one where they have integrity.

Why ? Always used one and never had an issue then again they’ve never really been the flag ship versions more margin poles. Would be nice to hear your issues with them if you don’t mind like cause my maver abyss (no 6 section especially) has been battered the last two years and still hauls them in like nothing

@@Hascienda27 maver released a "flagship pole" in 2019 the super lithium with a retail of £3600. Unfortunately I bought one and it was the most fragile pole to the point it was unfit for purpose. It repeatedly broke whilst playing fish on light gear. After some investigation it turns out that faults were found in the pole during testing and they released it anyway. They nearly went through in 2021 and it would have been good for angling if they did!

@@septicsceptic419 shame i used to love maver a decade ago as a younger angler, can’t help but feel alot of poles are lighter than they are stiffer and the price tends not too show for it either. Shame.

Side Puller kits and Middy dont go hand in hand. I think thats the biggest problem Middy has considering the cost and quality of their poles. SHAME ON YOU MIDDY. You are losing Customers.!!!

Some people see it as a positive as they get to choose what they like inside there poles take daiwa for example a lot of people don’t like there top kits because of there pullas most daiwa pole owners get the preston rollas in at least middy & guru give you the option it’s not hard to do if it’s already wrapped for it to be drilled

The best buying advice for a pole fisher is dont buy one . Nothing but a tryhard poolside menace pole fishermen are , taking up ridiculous space on and around the peg blocking walkthroughs with the pole on runners behind them and a continual noise menace with the irritating shhhh shhhh shhhh shhhhh pushing and pulling the pole in and out .
