@@d415ym1rabel Awesome! Thank you! I'm super intimidated by road bikes, so I currently ride a cute hybrid with a nice cruiser-like frame. But, I take that thing everywhere. So I'm comfortable riding on the road. I just feel so vulnerable on a road bike. But I also feel like they're just so awkward 😅 Granted, I was not properly fitted onto the one I tested 😆

Nice ride! Fun fact: The lower deck of the George Washington Bridge was originally meant to have train tracks (much like the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges). This never came to pass and the lower deck was used for vehicle traffic. The Verrazzano Bridge also has 2 decks for cars and trucks. Thanks for the video!

Fun fact: for decades the GW was a single level bridge. The lower level wasn't even thought of in the thirties, let alone trains.
@randorecumbent

@@stevek8829 They did indeed think of it. You just don't add another level to a bridge without designing it to handle the load in the first place. In fact, the NY/NJ Port Authority's own web site on the history of the bridge says the following "Ammann's design, bold and foresighted, was an engineering tour de force, with an extraordinary 3,500-foot center span suspended between two 570-foot steel towers, and the strength to carry two levels of roadway or rail."

@@randorecumbent ok that makes sense. I looked it up an hour ago and it was added in 61. I thought I remembered it later in sixties. The place is the worst traffic, as soon as one jam ends construction begins. Glad I haven't seen it in years. Thanks for the correct information.

There's a cool gravel riding park in outer Brooklyn called Shirley Chisholm State Park. You can ride the Shore Road Parkway and then the Jamaica Bay Greenway there, but from Williamsburg it's a lot shorter just to go via streets. There are a lot fewer bike lanes in the outer part of the borough, though.

Though I’ve ridden lots in NYC, I haven’t yet gotten the courage to ride in London. I wholeheartedly agree that cycling is the best way to take in cities. I’d recommend cycling in many other US cities as well. Many are less frenetic than NYC.

Daisy looks great, guuuurl, I don't know what your doing, but keep doing it!! NYC is a blast to ride in, my daughter went to The Pratt Institute for her grad degree, beautiful campus there in Williamsburg, if you all roll over to Bushwick, there is a cute bar called AllNite Skate, a 80s themed bar, centered around roller skating, super cute. I'm loving the videos of your trip!

For the Northeast Megapolis (DC, Philly, NYC, Boston), Washington DC really stands out for having the city that has the best riding. Rock Creek Park is amazing for riding in the city. You have great roads in Maryland that are in riding distance from the heart of DC. The C&O trail is an amazing gravel towpath that you can link to other roads or enjoy on its own. Virginia next door has great riding as well. I know NYC is a special city, but when it comes to a big urban area on the east coast with good cycling, you can’t beat DC. Come visit or let me know if you’d ever like some GPS files!

Nice man! That's the route most people do in the weekdays during the AM. Coming from Williamsburg (more toward Greenpoint) the quickest way to the GW is either up over the Queensboro, cut through Central Park and get over to the west side's Hudson River Greenway. Otherwise, if you're close to the Williamsburg Bridge, most people take that straight across Manhattan via Delancey and then after a quick right on Bowery, Prince Street the rest of the way. From there, there's a few local 'cut throughs' like going up Riverside Drive to the GW, but no matter what way you slice it, it's still about 25k / 16 miles to the bridge. If you want to check out any city racing, there's the Lucarelli & Castaldi Cup in Prospect Park at 6 AM this Saturday. Cat 1, 2, 3 then 3-4, and then 5-Novice. And yeah, the "ebike" thing - it's fucking insane here now 😂

I was observing a person near 80 years old flying down the street enjoying herself clutching the handlebar’s with a huge electric bike that was so big you had to look twice to see if a person was on it…. The joy of biking and the freedom to go faster than cars in the city ….

9W is boring. Maybe next ride continue north and go over the Cuomo Bridge back into Westchester. Piermont is a nice village off 9W in Rockland and not far from Tappanzee/Cuomo bridge. You then can take route 119 in Westchester going east just south of Cuomo to South County Trail/Empire State Trail that goes into the Bronx and Van Cortland Park. At that point you can take B'way into Manhattan or Westside Highway trail. Or if tired take #1 train at Van Cortland park last/first stop. Most people who do 9W are doing the Bear Mountain ride and Perkins Tower. Amazing views of Manhattan on a clear day 45 miles away. Tip? Wear loose fitting clothing in NYC humidity. The wind dries your clothes. Baggy shorts and shirts. Why tights if you don't race?
