The thing that I like about the Nazareth version is that it uses the third notes of the chords as its melody. So if you sing the Nazareth version's melody along with the Everly Brothers, you get this beautiful three-part, almost Beatley harmony.

The Everly Brothers were not Doo-Wop. They didn't have any nonsense syllables or recitation which are hall marks of Doo-Wop. I say that being a fan of Doo-Wop. Phil died in 2014 though he was two years younger than Don who is still living. I like Walk Right Back, When Will I Be Loved, Bye, Bye Love and Wake Up Little Suzie. The Brothers influenced the Beatles, Beach Boys, Bee Gees and Simon and Garfunkel.

I love this, the original version of "Love Hurts". Like others who have commented, I also heard the Nazareth version first and didn't even know this existed for many years later. It took me a while and many listens before I could even hear it without Nazareth's version loudly playing in my head and making this seem too slow and soft, like when Pat Boone covered Hard Rock songs with mellow versions. However, once I could hear this original without Nazareth playing, I came to appreciate its beauty. It's helpful to realize the two versions want to take you to very different places and think of them as totally different songs, with no relationship.

I love everything by the Everly Brothers. Their voices were so perfect with each other. My sister and I used to sing their songs: she would sing the low part (Don) and I would sing the high part (Phil). They are really pre-doowop. I remember hearing them when I was in grade school and that was early 50s. You should listen to Walk Right Back, which is more upbeat. I think you'd appreciate it.

@Modern Renaissance Man If you want to avoid these kinds of "corrections," you could start referring to the era of music that encompasses doo-wop as "the doo-wop/sock-hop era." That will keep people from splitting hairs, and you won't have to be concerned about which term to use. It's all from the same wonderful era. I agree with you that the music is soothing. What a relief from all the noise pollution of today. BTW, although this is my era of music, I had forgotten that the Everly Brothers first recorded "Love Hurts." Roy Orbison's version (which was meant to be the B side of one of his hits) came along the next year and overshadowed it. I'm glad you chose to feature the original version. Plus, let's face it. The Everly Brothers were way cuter than Roy. ;) Loved Roy, though. What a voice!

@linda jones Fair enough. It might have helped to include the definition of doo-wop which would have clarified for MRM and others what sets it apart from this song. I stand by my suggestion to group doo-wop and sock-hop music together when discussing a particular *era* of music. MRM does seem to enjoy music from this era, so it would appear that somewhere inside there's an old soul in a young man. Regards and shoo-dooten-dooby-doo...

I came late into the pop music scene in late 1964,near as I can remember, in England. I was 13. I got deep into all that Merseybeat and everything, but sometime in 65 or 66,The Everlys appeared on Ready Steady Go, the legendary Friday night pop music show. I'd never seen or heard anything like them, and they did a medley, including Cathy's Clown, and they stuck in my mind for years after I thought they were forgotten. Any time I want to remember what it was about them I liked, I just put a record on, feel those chills again. My God, they were great.

They bend notes & stay in perfect harmony they were the Country side of rock storytellers. They sang love songs, Songs about children dying to make you weep, Teen tragedy was a big thing then. but you need to hear (Wake up little Susie) fun upbeat song. Nazareth's version is more intense and impactful musically, but I gotta admit, Everly Brothers is easier to hear the lyrics to the point I'm actually listening to the words. But I think a lot of rock tunes are that way. Its easier to get distracted by the loud intense music production on rock versions that the words sometimes get lost. Or in some cases , can't even be understood or heard.

Just found you a couple of days ago, and I'm enjoying the variety of songs you are covering. I have a few to offer up that I think you might enjoy. I know you probably have heard the Statler Brothers if only from "Pulp Fiction" which has their song "Flowers on the Wall". I would suggest that you try out a few of their more obscure songs. Three I would suggest from the Short Stories album (1977) are "Grandma" (more serious), "The Regular Saturday Night Setback Card Game" (funny) and "Silver Medals and Sweet Memories" (appropriate for Veteran's or Memorial Day). Silver Medals and Sweet Memories was one of my mother's favorite songs. The Ames Brothers - "The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane" (1954). It is a fun pop song. Tex Williams is a country singer. In 1947 he had a hit with "Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)" a Western novelty song. Personally, I like his "The Night Miss Nancy Ann's Hotel for Single Girls Burned Down" (1977) for its humor. Elvis Presley's "You Gave Me a Mountain" is a powerful version of that song. Mark O'Connor did a sequel to "The Devil Went Down to Georgia called "The Devil Comes Back to Georgia". It has Charlie Daniels, Travis Tritt (Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde), Johnny Cash and Marty Stuart (I'm fairly certain you thought he was Jay Leno in Charlie Pride's "Kiss an Angel Good Morning". The music video is worth tracking down to watch as it has some fun moments.

Please, for God’s sake (and the rest of us) check out Nazareth’s version because it’s killer. I wish Nazareth hooked up with Doc Brown and took a trip from the 70s back to the 50s to perform the song on stage before an audience who were fans of the Everly Brothers. Oh, and please don’t give the Everly Brothers a Doo Wop membership card Ty. That’s like inducting Justin Bieber into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They’re not Doo Wop, they’re bubblegum at best.
