I wish we could make maps like with this simple method for Comanche games. kzitem.info/news/bejne/uoKPtWSPoYtpZqw Btw., Open Fodder has a random map generator, which from top view remind me of Comanche maps (green and blue). Very different game, but also fun and has some helicopters. Who knows who implements this real sandbox + projection + scanner to make some game maps. This would be ultra cool. And since we can even alter maps in realtime nowadays, there's endless possibilities...

Comanche 4 was one of the earliest DX 8.1 games ever made, so yeah the graphics were just wow in early 2002 when it came out. We were amazed about the rotor downwash effects and everything. Comanche turned into a really fast-paced arcade action game (not that the volcano missions of eralier version were lame, lol), sadly missing some realism Comanche 3 / Gold had.

@@earthenscience yeah it's just too colorful, similar to the NFS remake of NFS HP 2010. Comanche 4 looks a bit matte/flat nowadays, but good enough, tbh. For me DCS v1 Black Shark is more what Comanche 5 should have been...a simulation with good performance, graphics and also easy arcade mode, so you can just start w/o knowing 100 knobs. DCS v2 and v3, DCS World need much higher resources, but DCS v1 run on a Core2Duo PC w/o any issues, w/o looking less good in my opinion. A simulation should concentrate more on max FPS performance than on highest optics and effects. I think similar about UE4 vs. UE5, while the latter one needs much more resources for nearly no better graphics. It's already good enough. We go this way over and over again, having new DX shaders. need newer GPUs. I just have seen a UE4 vs. UE5 comparison, where the UE4 one has chandelier lights and the UE5 one looks like DX7 game, having less lights from the side only, which looks odd. Newer is not better in all cases. www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fdva7yvl6rsa91.png%3Fwidth%3D1080%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Da904ceece91173fb90ac04224b713fd066be9cc7

Same here, 3 and Gold seem to be the best in the series, also the most realistic ones. Nowadays I play DCS v1 Black Shark (the oldest one doesn't need much CPU ressources, but looks so real). It's like what Comanche 2020 could have been in my eyes. More realistic, less science fiction. I mean Ace Combat, HAWX and Comanche 2020 are cool, but very different. More shoot, less think.

Thanks for the video! As a six year old kid, I became obsessed with Comanche: Maximum Overkill after my older brother bought it. I later pestered my parents to buy Comanche Vs. Werewolf after salivating over it at Best Buy and also got my parents to buy me Comanche 3 and Comanche Gold. I still remember excitedly installing Comanche 3 and later Gold after getting them for their respective Christmas times. Spent many an hour in that game. Was so into the game I had friends and family members ask me to "stop talking about Comanche". Since I saw your video, I told my dad about there being a new Comanche and he said "Whoah" and we talked about it for a bit. Ended up being a Novalogic fan and picking up Armored Fist 3, F22 Lighting 3, Delta Force (got this after surgery in 7th grade) and Delta Force 2. I did some modding for Delta Force: Black Hawk Down even though I never bought the full game. I did do some mod work force 2 as well. Spent many hours on Delta-Force2.net. RIP that domain. Thanks for the walk down memory lane! I give my vote to Comanche Gold as the best match of gameplay and graphics. Comanche 4 lost that Comanche feeling for me, though I did appreciate the graphics upgrade. This newer Comanche game looks enjoyable in its own way, but is quite the deviation from the original series. I was super disheartened by the program's cancellation, but was able to see one of the Comanches at Ft. Rucker, AL years ago. Fun fact about the original Comanche. Kyle Freeman programmed the engine and its game all in Assembly. Assembly is one step up from machine code thus making the game much faster than if written in another language. Thank you for the walk down memory lane.

Thanks for your support! It is cool that you were able to see a Comanche in real life. I love the shape and "stealth" tech of this heli. For my research for the video I read about Kyle Freeman's achievements, this guy was a programming genius. Back in 1992 as a kid I thought many guys were involved developing the engine, but he did it himself (although it was based on previous voxel reasearch for medical imaging), like John Carmack did with Doom. The nineties were great years for kids to grow up and the pioneer years for 3D graphics. Man, when the nostalgia kicks in...

@@GameIntrosFinales You're welcome! It was exciting to see. Definitely a bit smaller than I expected too, but it's a scout chopper, so that makes sense. I agree, that guy was one of a kind in his programming abilities. Like many programmers of his time, he did some amazing things with a limited amount of resources then available on computers. John Carmack did impressive work as well and really advanced graphic engines and FPS games as a genre. I hadn't thought about his tie into voxel applications for medical applications, but that makes sense as it was a huge use for it many years back. It was a smart move to transition it to video games. The 90s definitely were a great time for 3d graphics as there were many leaps and bounds in graphics and by extension the type and depths of games.

Kyle Freeman details the SNES version, in issue 254 of Retrogamer Magazine. Points out even with the SFX Chip, the SNES version looked far too block, maps were cut down in size, these factors, combined with the high price of the SFX chip, killed the project. He also states experimental work with the Sega Mega Drive was carried out, but it produced no tangible results.

Comanche 3 / Comanche Gold was a game driven by inspiration for the real thing, sadly that dedication towards mission details and flight realism got badly toned down with Comanche 4 to attract a bigger arcade audience. The 2021 game has somehow "broken flight controls" (?) , I just couldn't get it to work with my Microsoft Sidewinder 2 joystick and left dissapointed. It's probably not meant to be played with a joystick anyway but I refuse to use keyboard and mouse, what a disgrace. If only Comanche Gold could be brought back but the original programmers from novalogic are probably already dead, bummer!
