The author of "Sultani: Traditions Renewed" describes the traditional dress of UAE women as it evolved through several stages of change from 1966 to 2004. The talk places the changes in their historical, cultural, social, economic, political, and ethnic contexts.
This history serves as a lens in looking at the impact of oil wealth, urbanization, access to the world market, and the pressures of globalization on the fashions of a conservative Arab-Islamic society.
