MP-44 didn't make sacrifices for the sake of cartoon accuracy or articulation. It made sacrifices to enable a GIMMICK. Had they not decided to cram a sound box into the toy, the backpack could have been a lot smaller and more in-line with the cartoon. It infuriates me when a toy is gimped in favor of a gimmick.

Sacrificing articulation in favor of sculpt or the complete opposite is exactly what this designing action figures thing is all about. Some times I agree with those sacrifices, some times I don't and that is mostly what helps me decide what I'm going to buy. There are a lot more variations to this "sacrificing this in favor of that" equation and with transformers there is another point to be added, the transformation and the alt mode, so it becomes easier to please some and displease others but as I said before, every experienced collector should know that this is it and should be ready to deal with that easily by buying what he likes and not buying what he doesn't. Now quality, quality is something no one should be willing to sacrifice, specially with Takara Tomy and the price points we let them sell those figures for. Either those price points mean the highest quality imaginable or they are even more of a rip off then I normally think they already are. Quality can only be sacrificed for a lower price point and that is it. There are two thing and two things alone that can mean a higher price range in this hobby of action figures collecting and those are a higher quality and rarity, nothing else is acceptable. Takra Tomy is trying to sacrifice quality for profit and that is ripping off the collectors. This is in hour hands as individuals and as a community of collectors, the quality gets lower we don't buy, we don't buy there is a decrease in profit, we can dream about big companies like Takara Tomy listening to what we have to say but as long as we buy those lower quality figures for that same price range they wont improve quality. A decrease in profit is the only language these big companies understand and don't be afraid because they have been making huge amounts of profit with the Transformers franchise for years and years and they know they will keep on profiting for a lot more so they wont stop releasing TF figures if the profit lowers they will just address the problem and upgrade the quality. This is like that drug dealer that sells very good quality drugs for the first batch he sells, then he keeps on selling lower quality drugs saying that it was a one time thing, that he isn't to blame, that the culprit his his own dealer and he his going to have a serious talk with him so things are going to get back to what they where but as long as the drug addicts keep on buying them lower quality drugs he wont change his batch. Takara is getting ready to do the same and if we the TF action a figure addicts keep on paying for those lower quality figures they will keep on lowering the quality and raising the prices. Please wake up and start doing the right thing, don't buy expensive figures with a lower quality, don't buy figures that had the price point raised with no reason whatsoever then making a bigger profit, it's in hour hands and we have the power to change all that witht our wallets.

I'm done with Takara. Prices are too high and I'm not willing to sacrifice aesthetics for articulation. My display space doesn't allow for crazy dynamic poses as they take up more space that way. I can live without the butterfly joint if it makes a cleaner figure. None of the figures in my display that have an ab crunch are utilizing it. Nice to have, but don't need it if it sacrifices the overall look of the bot. I'm also not a fan of them becoming such a slave to the animation models. By today's standards those animation models are pretty poor. Not to mention they were made overly simple to make animating them easier. I prefer for my adult collectible to feel and look like an adult collectible. Lack of die cast. The recent QC issues haven't helped either. Megatron was my last purchase. I dont see that changing any time soon.

The last MP I bought was Grapple. That means it is over three years since Takara made an MP I wanted and was willing to pay the price for! I could've been tempted to buy every BW MP were it not for the price hike. Similarly, Hound and, to some extent, Optimus. What is notable is that both you and I have quite different MP collections and we both stopped (not consciously, in may case, at first) buying Takara at the same time. I'm hoping TFE will make Mirage and maybe fill my last few Autobot car gaps; that Maketoys will get their coneheads over the finish line and that maybe TFE and IF legends will provide a BW collection that will do the job for me...

I know the cartoon aesthetic isn't for everyone but it's what brought me into the hobby. I had a few toys as a kid but I think Wheeljack was my only S1 character so I just don't have the attachment to the toy aesthetic that others do. I watched the cartoon every time it got re-released though so that's how I remember them. MP-44 was my entry into the line and despite the price I am really happy with it. The QC issues are scaring me away from buying Hound which is a shame because he looks fantastic. I really hope things turn around for Takara. Fan Toys is looking really good though and I'm looking forward to picking one up. Truth be told, the original Beast Wars toys came first, not the TV show. The Beast Wars TV show is loosely based on the Beast Wars toyline's canon. In the Beast Wars toyline's canon, the Autobots become Maximals and the Decepticons become Predacons. For example, Optimus Prime becomes Optimus Primal, who transforms into a bat mode and then upgrades into gorilla mode, Transmetal 1 Optimus Primal and Transmetal 2 Optimus Primal (AKA Optimal Optimus).

Not quite; the gorilla Optimus Primal & Tyrannosaurus Megatron are said to be separate characters from G1 Optimus (aka bat Optimus Primal) & G1 Megatron (aka alligator Megatron); the main Beast Wars continuity is separate from the early toyline continuity.

I really need to comment more, I watch videos via firestick. I think you nailed it. The Hound release is a moment. He's the first figure I almost regret buying because everything was sacrificed for this cartoon look. I think it might be why they backed off from die cast... Since most metallic coloring is gone, why use metal? I've been catching up on 3p and hoping Takara comes back around to the hybrid/marriage look. See, I like the cartoon looking bots with the toy/realistic vehicles. I prefer the use of silver and metallic paints over the whites, grays and pastels...which was my one issue with mp36... The chrome toy version went too far the other way.. It's like American politics, you're either crazy left or crazy right instead of being sane somewhere near the middle...Hound would've definitely benefited from that and die cast.. Weren't the '+' figures supposed to be toon? Well they dropped.the ball with shockwave, has his repaint been metallic and more toy, I'd have double dipped... Instead... I went 3p... I think HasTak is losing a chunk of its fan base by doubling down on the cartoon thing... It's like, 'Hey let's just be PC because everyone likes being PC.' Wrong, so wrong... It's offensive... To my wallet... Granted. Some figures, like Megatron benefit from more toon aesthetic.. But for instance Hot Rod needed to be modeled on his real life car (the Dome Zero, kids)... vehicle modes need to be 'playable' they last few haven't been. I mean Hound is a Jeep that can't go over a speed bump.... Let that sink in. An off road vehicle that will bottom out in s parking lot... MP 44 was the same... anyway, bobby, dig your work. Keep it up and stay safe

I'm new to the collecting world of Masterpiece Takara Tomy. I didn't get my first bot until 2018 and I'm taking it slow as I only have about 12 figures in total. I'm not personally connected to a video like this because I haven't been collecting since the mid-2000's like some of the people on this message board but after reading the comments, it's clear many people are upset. For me personally, I'm very satisfied with my experiences. I only know toon accurate bots and I paid expensive prices. I entered the collecting world with those as standard things. I suppose I'm content in that regard that I'm used to it opposed to others who aren't. I wonder if sales are dropping for TT as fans stop buying? I think it would be an interesting discussion piece for a sit down Saturday - perspectives from new fans vs old fans.

I’m the guy keeping the Beasties MP line going! Beast Wars brought me back to the fandom and always being a kid at heart I wanted toys to battle as I watched the cartoon. Needless to say my trip to the toy store was filled with disappointment when I saw the original toy offerings and my money remained with me. Fast Forward a few years and we get the Live Action movies, sure not my G1, not my Beasties but my Transformers and this begins my journey down the collecting rabbit hole. Filling my collection with Mainline, Import and Third Party my heart still aches for screen accurate Maximals and Predicons. I snapped up Generations Rynox, Waspinator and Rattrap in a heart beat but no more, so my heart ached once more. As if a ray of light broke thru the clouds, an announcement was made, Takara will be doing a MP Primal. One the first video I saw of the transformation my pre order went in. Cheetor was next, no video needed, preorder in on 6 to 10 photos. Now we hit the Big Guy, Megatron! Go to regular sites to preorder and get a severe case of sticker shock! No preorder this time, this time I wait. Reviews come in, I weight all comments and when TFCon Toronto approached and he became my must get. Dinobot, almost the same deal, sticker shock! Instead he became a personal get for me, working extra hours, finding ways to spice up some ramen and just when I’m ready to purchase, BAM! Along came a spider, a Black Widow to be exact. So this past Christmas I treated myself to a Lady and a Raptor. These are the toys, the action figures, the Beasties I wanted when I first saw the TV Show in my 20s. Yes, the bigger ones are expensive and they do continue to rise in price, but they are exactly what I wanted. I own them and I cannot be any happier. I feel now they, as in Takara, have the basics down to complete the season one cast as we can see that with Tigertron to which my preorder is just itching to get fulfilled so I can continue down the journey I wanted to start ever so long ago.

Thnaks for the vid, it goes into a massive problem, because as much as I would want some more MPs from Takara, the quality (and especially taking the price into account) is really not worth it for a lot of people. Although I have Willis, I wanted to have that "do I replace him?" dilemma, but after news of the breakages came through - no way. It makes MMC's Cynicus look like a good deal. However, I think the case of the country in which a factory is located is a bit more complicated issue. Somebody familiar with that factory mentioned that one of the issues is also that Vietnam is a much more humid country, which has an impact on paint. I'm not saying that its the only factor: we know there were security issues at those factories with figures leaking much before their release date, and they do seem to have more issues. But the ones in China also have problems sometimes, is all I'm saying. Speaking of paint, it surprises me that there were many toys that had no problems with chipping like FT's Sovereign, Willis, Springer, but even with Takara's Ironhide or Inferno (not talking about the chrome of the former). Now its suddenly become very common. I think they're cutting production cost on such things as primer etc. I mean a paint chip is always possible (as you say, the cost of doing business), but today its so strong, that it can kill your enjoyment with the hobby.

Masterpiece transformers have gone down in quality since the release of megs and the switch to the toon style with note able exceptions such as prime and primal with sun screen being debatable. I do have a couple corrections to the video one you used a later rerelease of the og primal that was made for an anniversary and was also improved to look more toon accurate, there was also a megs they did the same to but I'll give you props for using the actual megatron toy that was released during the beast wars toyline. Two the toys tended to come first than the animation was based on that except for things like G1 season 3 and the mess known as beast machines. Though i understand that if you didn't know that about primal you can easily mix them up. Other than that it was a great video like always

I agree that Takara is going down, but I know they can do better, their Tigatron, from what we’ve seen, seems to look good in both modes. Outside of the little mistakes at the beginning (you show MP-38 when talking about MP-32, and the Original BW toys weren't made based on the cartoon as you said, but the toys already existed and the cartoon were based on those, hence the similarity with Primal), I am in the same boat. Worse even, since outside of Beast Wars my last MP was Ratchet, prefering 3rd party for the others. I've also argued that the current focus of the MP line isn't so much cartoon accuracy, but articulation. TT will go for cartoon accuracy (to a fault), but will sacrifice this for more articulation. This can be seen with the back(pack)s of Sunstreaker, Megatron and OP and BB v2: they only look accurate from one angle. Why, just so they can pull of more poses. Add to this that as a result figures become far more complex and fragile and that I have always doubted TT's ability to produce quality figures (as in durable) when complexity is involved). Likewise, for me MP has become something I no longer want: I want the Hasui mix of animation model, real life altmode and details from the toy and the altmode. Thus, the only possible G1 MP releases I can see happening that I would buy, would be important characters. And those would be very limited. Very limited indeed.

Love Hound ... but he is definitely fragile, but looks incredible. So I'm not seeing really a loss of aesthetics but definitely the quality is lower. As a G1 collector - for me the last few years seem rather quiet... mostly rereleases as + models (which are an improvement I enjoy as I did not yet have the base version) then MP 44 and Hound. The issue is ... I see 3rd party figures while not quite what I look for in aesthetics doing a knockout job and better quality for a lower cost. UNFORTUNATELY, I missed out on the initial releases of them, and now they are just as expensive. So am I willing to pay a bit more for something that completes the look I want for less quality... maybe for a few bots but ultimately will be a deal breaker. What compounds this... is the fact that within weeks a KO version comes out that looks exactly the same and has equal quality or better for 1/3 the price. I mean when a KO comes out and fixes production issues... super bad for Takara. (not out to promote or defend KOs.. but these are sad facts) So I definitely see how I would have a sour taste should I have been collecting Takara from the beginning. Now that I'm starting to pick up bots Takara doesn't yet offer I'm really starting to see why collectors are backing other brands (especially Fans Toys). It's funny how the perception can change depending on when someone starts collecting. I couldn't imagine collecting 3 versions of Prime. I was still missing the first trio of seekers and now having the new MP 52s in hand complicates things further... high price and nice bots but a huge question as to was it worth it... will I replace the M11 style seekers I have? Or use it as a way to trick myself into having a set in both modes. (I'm a huge seeker fan) I think they need to spend more time going through a fan quality test group before committing to production. Then clean things up and ensure better production for a higher price point. Otherwise they just as well make them cheap to keep the KOs from ruining them. I really don't get why they have to make some of the transformations so complex either, it should be a matter of Alt - bot limiting the steps to keeping the aesthetic and a set range of motion. Instead of adding 100+ steps with crap quality. How many times I think of seekers and how they could have just cleaned up the look and kept the original transformation. Any way .... I unfortunately am guessing it's only a matter of time before my perception changes a bit more to what you've said in this set of videos.

I still collect MP, and I don't mind the newer cartoon aesthetic. I find something about the clean, smooth, blocky designs rather easy on the eyes. However, I haven't purchased any of the newer or Beast MPs, and I don't have a preferred style in my collection. I have MP-13 serving under MP-36, even though their styles are different. I do think Takara is rather overpriced, and sometimes, makes their transformations more complicated than they need to be. I bought TE-01 instead of MP-44 because I felt the latter was more complicated than it needed to be, were as TE is less complicated, slimmer, and cleaner. I also hate MP-45. That figure only looks good from the front, thanks to a bunch of car-mode features nobody asked for. Also, now with the reports of breakages, it sounds to me like TT could just be getting lazy. But Lio Convoy did have both a clean back and minimal reports of breakage, so maybe things will change. (Also, I don't get the toy-deco reissues, the G1 toys are fun for nostalgia, they don't work super well on the new, cartoon-based designs)

I've now actively started to replace official MPs with 3rd Party offerings instead of the other way around. Who could have imagined that ever happening?

I did the same with TT Sideswipe, Red Alert, and Starscream, would have swapped out Skywarp and Thundercraker if I had them. However, those are all older TT molds which were considered "Masterpiece" and the best representations of those characters at the time released. The choice between FT Hound and TT Hound was much closer than I initially thought, but I pulled the trigger on TT Hound, found him brand new on Amazon JP for like $80.

04:30 - the worst part of MP Sunstreaker is the head. A more attractive face would have made it superior to Bad Cube's in every way.

I thought the worst part was using the animated Autobot symbols and leaving out the black accents on the car to appeal to the cartoon aesthetic

I would love to see your opinion on why Takara don’t seem to want to create Combiners, Triple Changers and Head Masters. I know Japan has this hero worshiping mentality, but there are Plenty of Autobots who are these types I mentioned. What do you think?

I feel like Masterpiece has moved away from what Im looking for. Im not saying its bad, but I feel things like transformation and alt mode shouldn't be completely sacrificed for a more g1 accurate alt mode. I want a high quality representation of a character I like with a nice alt mode, a fun transformation, and a great robot mode that looks fairly close to what its based on. I also want it for a reasonable price. Not cheap, but if Im paying $200+ it needs to be on par woth other items that are $200+. Okce again, Im not saying its bad, I'm saying its just moved away from what I like.

Personally I'm willing to pay more for Takara because it is the only MP company that I have never, yes never, experienced any breakage from. I experience breakage from every 3P company.

I feel the mp line broke with soundwave. I couldn't have been more excited for an mp than i was finding him in toys r us, only to open it and find him flimsy, light and cheaply made. Yet he still ranks high on best lists? It only has gone down from there.

Things you can do with a figure are great, but at what cost? None, none of my Takara dudes are doing crazy poses, cause of space. I mean what’s the goal? Display all my guys in spits looking down through the ab crunch with ankles tilted? Some pose ability but to what extent? I believe we are sacrificing too much for posing and losing what we love....good figures for the price that hold up longer than mp47

I still think Sunsurge is a better Transformer than the official MP Sunstreaker. Why? Visible vehicle parts better incorporated into the bot mode body. The official has gaps and much too visible panel lines where things are just folding up onto each other just to get out of the way. Yes, the official looks more like the toon and is MUCH more articulated, but it came at the price of being less of what I consider a transformer. I'd also argue Sunsurge is a better partner for MP Sideswipe because of this. Similarly the official MP Megatron is a mess of jigsawed panel lines to my eyes. I went Mightron instead, which has its issues, but looks FAR cleaner. Prefer the old MP Bee for all the aforementioned reasons, and think FT Willis is better than MP Hound too despite being unable to do all that cool posing. I'm not really in the market for hyper toon accuracy and the sacrifices that seems to bring. I get there is a market for it, but I'm not it. Plus I'm not eager to buy again things I feel I already own good representations of.

I will always cut them some slack why cause unlike 3party companies that only put a handful of figures a year Takara is putting lines not a handful of toys lines of toys every year sometimes putting out 3 or 4 version of the same character look at all of the different versions with got of Prime last year 4 or 5 and all different with different transformations all they have to do is put some die cast in them and people will overlook all of the qc problems the figure has like they do with 3party companies

I'm not sure if FansToys really has the title of surpassing MP. Fanstoys certainly looks cool, but a lot of their Transformations rely on linkages, even in cases were they seem like they shouldn't. Also seems like some could have better pose-ability. I once considered picking up Hoodlum, until I found out how limited his shoulders were, so I decided to pass. Now Maketoys and DX9, they may have surpassed MP.

As a whole I’ve burned out on MP. Started Hot toys and I feel the fire again as far as collecting goes. Takara is too expensive and MP44 is my last purchase. He was not worth it either. They keep raising prices and quality is not there. My Hot Toys Maul wasn’t much more than Prime and the level of QC as a whole is night and day. Hot toys paint and everything about the presentation is on another level. Maul was worth it and it showed me even more that Prime was not. The reboot of the line was the first thing that pissed me off. I want my characters to strongly resemble the toon while having that adult collector look and feel. The straight toon look makes them look like straight up “toys” now. The only brand I’ll continue to buy almost every release is FT. I will also consider other 3rd party figures. Done with Takara. Sad when a 3rd party like FT can paint its figures better and evenly. My Sunstreaker has 3 shades of yellow. Last note on MP44. How can the “official company” make the most iconic character and paint be unevenly applied, bent antenna, sprue marks and knee issues? Yet people overlook this because it can pull every pose? Sorry sucker won’t be stamped on my forehead again. 3rd Party for the win!

I am curious as to why no one, be they official or Third Party, has not given certain G1 figures the Masterpiece treatment. In particular, I would love to see a Punch/Counterpunch. Also, I am still hoping to see other lines get the MP treatment. (I would LOVE to see a Transformers Prime Knockout, Hardshell and in particular Soundwave...)

also who wanted a Leo convoy? I mean was there even a beast wars 2? certainly didn't see the show so why would I run out and pay nearly 150-quid on a figure that's from a show I never watched and that looks like a Digimon! it seems Takara are doing this to spite itself to ensure the west shows no interests as their culture seems to be very guarded. They would rather a Japanese only market and it shows in their lack of anything quality, as we it seems are a little more critical of what we spend out money on.. I could be wrong,. But wouldn't they be more worried about loosing a global market from poor quality if this wasn't the case?

Masterpiece has become everything I hated about other transformers series and praised masterpiece for long ago.... masterpiece used to be a good looking bot with no gaps, no ugly hanging parts and no compromises. Mp10 ,soundwave , even the flawed Rodimus prime.. they were all almost picture perfect representations of G1 with a small touch of modern who had no gaps , no hanging parts and who all looked perfect. Masterpieces are all super ugly in the back now ....they were always clean before this new wave of "slighlty more g1 accurate but way uglier from every other angle" I hate the new masterpeices. They turned perfection into shit. Im sorry but even the official unicron has gaps , and hollow fingers ......ffs its horrid. I would take the small zeta for 700 dollars any day over a bigger ugly bot for 700 dollars.
