Hard disagree that Alex isn't at fault. She's a grown adult and made the decision to cheat on her fiance. It's not like she was some poor fresh faced intern; she was featured a fair amount on the channel and had a good position in the company. Obviously that doesn't excuse Ned abusing a position of power to have an affair with an employee or the public backlash she's getting, but she's not faultless in this scenario; the world isn't as black and white as that.

I think some of the hate that Alex is getting has to do with just how involved Ariel has been with this company. She's not some obscure "wife at home." These two interacted with some degree of regularity. Alex was also directly involved in videos in which the premise was for Ariel to share her deep insecurities about herself. To listen to this woman talk about the things about herself that make her physically insecure, and then sleep with that woman's husband is just so gross on Alex's part.

You are so smart and so insightful and so succinct. I find that lots of tea and internet culture channels do this thing where they phrase simple or rudimentary ideas as if they are super deep, as well as bizarre roundabout repetition in their sentence structure to sound smart while talking about silly things. It’s so refreshing to me that you talk like a normal-sounding, conversational, very intelligent person. There’s an ease to the way you speak while maintaining your deep insight that I find so unique and wonderful! Missed you!

100% agree! A lot of tea and internet culture channels (to borrow your expression) stretch the same fact and sentence to last for a whole video. It is very obvious that they are too lazy to do a lot of research to talk about the before but they still want to fill a video to get money. So they use one small fact that may or may not be controversial to fill the video, maybe add some reactions they found on twitter at the end, add a clickbait title and bam. Finished their lazy, money hungry video.
@Anais2002pr

Thank you for the video. Your content is always on point. I agree with 99% of what you said except the fact that you feel Alex Herring has no blame in the situation. She isn't a child. She is 36 years old, she was in a long term relationship, and she was about to get married. Just like Ned monetized his wife guy persona, Alex was starting to do the same with her upcoming nuptials. That must be the reason why her own fiancé exposed them both. I understand that there is a power dynamic, but Alex worked with both Ned and his wife. She understood what Ned brought to the table when it came to the Try Guys. She probably hung around Ariel pretty frequently, and she still had no problem crossing that line. I guess I would cut her more slack if there was proven quid pro quo between the two. But I just think they were bored with their long term relationships and found flirting on videos, while both knowing they were fooling around to be very exciting. They both suck. But Ned will likely never truly recover because he's a fraud. I wish them both a lifetime of well deserved infamy.

Something to note here that I only recently discovered from SWOOP’S video: Alex was a fan of the try guys when working at BuzzFeed and there was an implication from her comments that people under the main talent do not speak to the people higher up in the company. They took Alex with them when they left BuzzFeed and I find it hard to believe that that dynamic still wasn’t a thing or at least present in her mind, on top of being a literal fan. It puts more of an icky feeling to the relationship

So originally I agreed with you but try looking at it this way. There are 2 possibilities here: 1. Their relationship was consensual, and alex is therefor equally to blame-- she did all of this by her own choice w/o manipulation and therefor is clearly in the wrong. 2. Their relationship was not consensual due to a power imbalance. (Ex: Ned wanted to be with her and she only agreed bc her job was on the line if she were to say no). In this situation she wouldn’t really be to blame and would actually be a victim While we can argue about which situation is more likely, and while I personally agree that #1 is more likely, if there is even a chance that it could be #2 wouldn’t it be absolutely terrible for us to come after her? That’s like someone accusing someone else of rape, there’s technically a chance that they are lying, but we automatically have to believe the victim due to the implications of us not believing them when they were truly terribly harmed or traumatized

100% wrong on so many levels. 1. The only person to say the relationship was consensual was Ned. No one has come out and stated how it actually went down. So don’t assume based off of that shitty man’s words. 2. Ned was her HR, he was her boss, he signed her checks 3. The try guys have come out and stated not to harass anyone involved. Imagine your mistakes being broadcasted everywhere and millions of people are judging you. That level of judgement and then harassment can push anyone to suicide. Leave Alex and Ned the fuck alone. No one is babying them when they say “don’t harass them”. And finally, Strangers on the internet < the people in your life. Trust that everyone involved is getting the punishment they deserve off the internet. @spacecowbo7716

i think to say that the woman deserves no blame is insanely black and white and shows no nuance. i agree that the relationship is inherently unhealthy and you can’t have full consent when there are power dynamics at play, but this woman is a grown adult who knew exactly what she was doing. she knew that she was hurting not only ned’s wife and kids, but also her own partner. both her and ned are completely responsible for their own actions. unless she was literally being forced or blackmailed into having a relationship with him, she made choices that were disrespectful, unethical and caused so much harm to people that did not deserve it. i do think ned is worse because he is older and superior to her in the workplace, but it’s not like this girl was forced into doing something that she didn’t know the consequences of. just because one person is more wrong doesn’t mean that the other person is completely absolved of any blame.
@Psy_duckling

I also think people aren’t acknowledging that the power dynamic wasn’t clear. Alexandra and Ned were coworkers at Buzzfeed for years, and the try guys kept bringing their old coworker friends back as guests and hired Alexandra as an old coworker. Plus ned was not the only boss. But their relationship was established more on the grounds of equals rather than being isolated as a inherent power disadvantage

He was in a much higher position in buzzfeed than the rest of them, so when try guys was starting to be a series, and no longer a one off, he made sure that the control of the IP stayed with the Gus

I'm ecstatic that you're back!! I hope your time off has been healing and relaxing, and that you know there's no pressure to come back if you're not ready. Also, as a fan of the Try Guys since they branched off, this is an excellent analysis of them. I do kind of disagree though. I 100% agree that a relationship with a power imbalance cannot be considered consensual and Ned took advantage of his position, but I do think Alex deserves some criticism solely because she also cheated. Granted, Ned is absolutely the one deserving hate, criticism, and pushback, but she also cheated on a partner she was with for 10+ years. The amount of criticism they deserve is obviously on very different levels and Ned deserves so much more of it. Imo, cheating is never okay

Considering how long Alex was in a relationship with her fiancé, I find it hard to not put a little blame on her. Ned takes majority blame for the power imbalance but if it's a non consentual relationship why didn't she tell her fiancé. I believe they were together for..., 10 years? After that long, you would think he would be the one she'd go to EVEN if she was being forced. The one she loved for YEARS. The one to seek comfort and help from(other than family). She would've known that a cheating relationship with Ned could destroy her long lasting relationship if it got out. If it was nonconsent, that relationship would be salvageable. It would look better on her to be the unwilling victim than the intentional cheater. Out of all the people in her life that could be most affected (ignoring Ariel, Try Guys, and the company), it would be her fiancé. She should have enough trust in her fiancé to not betray or abandon her. Enough trust to confide in during such a situation. So, why did her fiancé only find out through a fan? A YEAR LATER. To me, it looks like she kept it a secret and cheated. Fuck Ned. He's mostly to blame. But Alex isn't blame free.

personally wouldnt go so far as to say it was nonconsensual because i think the implications of that are really big without sufficient concrete evidence. i do agree there is a power imbalance, and it puts into question the legitimacy of consent given by the woman. but i think that by assuming that she had no choice, we are making the assumption that she was helpless and forced to do this, when the reality is that she could have chosen to switch jobs, tell someone, and not cheat on her 10 year relationship. she is a grown woman - which isnt to say that she cant be coerced, but staying in it for so long that the news came out from external sources? she didnt have to stay in the job, in this situation, she had plenty of time and just as many opportunities to do whatever it took to regain her integrity and loyalty to her partner and she didnt do it at any point.

I’m sorry but I just can’t with the “preying on a subordinate at work”. I understand the technicalities of what you’re saying and the math adds up for an abuse of power situation. But I think nuance exists and this *woman* did make her own decisions time and time again. She should not be getting hate and she’s certainly not the main responsible here. But she also participated in putting her own career at risk by having an exciting affair with her boss. She also woke up every day and made those choices that put herself and the company at risk. Not even mentioning the complete disregard for a wife and kids who were in the picture. She was not an underage, under experienced, naive little girl. I think the phrase “preying upon a subordinate” suggests that she was coerst into something.

I think boiling Alex down entirely to a victim is extremely infantilizing and reductive of the impact her actions had. We're not talking about hurt feelings, getting cheated on by a partner of a decade is life altering and traumatic. It can be true that she was both part of a relationship with a power imbalance and also true that she's a 30 year old woman with financial mobility who actively played a role in hurting her partner and someone else's partner. People being upset with her is not absurd by any stretch.

I’m SOOO glad you’re back! This video was so thoughtful and well articulated. Respectfully, I do disagree about Alex having NO blame in this. There was a power imbalance for sure and I agree about it never being fully consensual as long as that imbalance is there, but she did still have some responsibility. She is grown and made the choice to have a year long affair with him- being engaged herself no less. Ned should absolutely be getting 90% of the heat for this, but to say that she is a victim with no responsibility is a stretch 🤷🏼♀️
@LacyLynLabret

Totally agree with you. Especially due to the fact that there is a power embalance, but so many people act like Alex is some teenager who's just a food baby when in reality she's like 30 and an associate producer. Very much an adult who can make decisions. Legally it's definitely a power imbalance non the less tho.

So good to see you back, lots of love 💜 just started listening :D Edit: Hadn't really heard of these guys but this was really interesting. I really liked you sharing your view on power dynamics meaning those relationships can't be consensual, I had never really considered this as an absolute before, but it has really given me food for thought. Looking forward to your next post xx
