@@WimRijksen I did. Fascinating info. I have a particular interest in Charles I as family lore says that an ancestor of mine (on my dad’s side) was captain of the King’s guard for Charles I and he didn’t survive either. Supposedly his 8 sons emigrated to Massachusetts where their Uncle John already lived.

He mishandled the politics of the war, and his later communications abroad fed the treason narrative of his opponents. There was a point when Charles I, even though militarily defeated, could have kept his throne, with the happy consent of the likes of Cromwell, who felt that England needed a constitutional monarch.

@ds1868
Жыл бұрын
The Banqueting House was built on the orders of King Charles I, and much of the King's art collection was kept here. The site for execution was deliberate to insult the King. He was forced to walk through one of the first floor windows onto the scaffold erected outside. A sad end to a very misunderstood sovereign.

Oliver Cromwell got the king executed and committed genocide all in the name of God. What sweet guy. .
@tomashalusek9181

As Protestant I gotta tell ya that Oliver Cromwell was an extremely ethical man who stood up for other ethical men who did their best living honest lives and improving their communities. These values helped Britain (and America - since it was founded by puritans much like Cromwell) be extremely efficient and competitive, innovative, rational, and disciplined during the period when the great powers divided the world. Had we had no Cromwell there's a decent chance Britain would have ended up like Spain - retarded, underdeveloped, stagnant for ages, drowned in poverty and lack of social mobility. Cromwell led the fight for values that helped us prevent that. He took no personal gain from that. Dude lived a very modest life. While people that he fought against were in no way less violent. And if by genocide you mean what Cromwell did to the Irish back then - lets keep in mind that monarchists treated Ireland just as bad when they needed to. And that Irish themselves had no particular problems committing and supporting atrocities when they needed to. So it's not like Cromwell did something that was much worse compared to what others did. While his contributions and improvements that he initiated were giant.

@@tomashalusek9181liver Cromwell was a much more complicated character than you make out. And in many respects the period of Cromwell's rule did not solve many of the constitutional and political issues of the time. All the landmark legislation came later in the reign of William III and Mary II, notably the Bill of Rights 1689 and the Act of Settlement 1701. Your view of Cromwell and his contribution to English social and political reform is too simplistic and inaccurate.
