i always thought vectorman was a great series for the genesis, but only the genesis. make it on the saturn and they would have to reimagine vectorman to not be a bunch of balls if they kept up with the series. vectorman could have very well been segas answer to megaman, especially if they made his different forms togglable. a matter of fact when i first saw the kickstarter for mighty number 9 i thought more of vectorman then megaman since beck transforms into things like vectorman does, but like i said that would have improved vectorman the forms are togglable

To many commenters; Alex Kidd isn't what I'd call a forgotten mascot, but a REPLACED mascot. I'd consider Opa Opa more of a forgotten mascot for Sega. Opa Opa was in the Fantasy Zone games and in Zillion on the menu screen and Game over/continue screens. I'm a total Sega geek but they kept changing their mascots. Nintendo picked Mario and stuck with him for 30 years. Nice ep GS!

Early 80s, actually. I'd played plenty of platformers that I'd consider better than Sonic before Sonic came along, so I didn't really see the appeal. It's not that fucked up when you think about the numbers for a minute - Super Mario Bros, which popularized both the platform and game mascot genres, was released in 1985. The first Sonic game wasn't released until 1991, when I was 9. Six years is a long time in the video game world for every company to copy a successful formula, some did it better than others. I didn't feel like the Sonic series was one of them. Half of each stage is set up so you can get a run off or speed boost so that the game's playing itself, the other half is made up of poorly designed, slippery controlling platform segments. Sure, it's fast, and sure, it looks great, but I never found the Sonic series to be much fun. Recently, I bought the Genesis collections on Steam and revisited the series...still didn't find them very fun. I liked Ristar and Dynamite Headdy a lot moreso, and absolutely love Wonder Boy in Monster World.

Treasure has recently developed a couple 3D brawlers based on a licence from Capcom. GAIST CRUSHER and GAIST CRUSHER GOD. Unfortunately they are both Japan exclusive and we cannot play Japan 3DS Games without a Japan 3DS. I bought them just to support them and collect more Treasure games. Would have been cool to see Nintendo buy the licence for Gunstar and use it with TREASURE to make a game. Instead they have Splatoon. A Massive multiplayer Gunstar Heroes is something that just cannot exist in this gaming world. I have more fun watching videos about gaming instead of playing games.

I love Vectorman. I will say you forgot Tak. He was an unofficial video game mascot to the (sort of) once loved TV channel Nickelodeon as Crash Bandicoot once was to Sony. This is a not so talked about game series from the 6th generation of consoles and was overseen by other platformers during it's time. The game did sale and got cult following which led to 2 sequels, Nickelodeon producing a TV show based on them(which killed the chance for a new game being made), and 2 more games based on the show. I have reviews of the first 3 games if you guys want to check them out.

So the creators of Sonic The Hedgehog made a character that literally is Eggman..?

I think the biggest issue with vectorman not being huge was the fact the Saturn had already launched months before the 2 games were released. I actually quit playing my Saturn for a few months to play Vectorman Easily my top 2 genesis games, followed by streets of rage 2

It's cool that you guys didn't mention Bubsy. That's far too easy, you may as well just avoid ever bringing it up. If you guys do another forgotten mascots episode, leave Bubsy out of that one, too. I mean, Bubsy is a bad game and all... but we already know that.

happyhappy joyjoy They were all pretty bad. I only played maybe 20 minutes of the first one. I don't need to play the others to know why they're bad, and why Bubsy didn't catch on.

Here's what I have to say about each game: Socket: This game has me charged up for adventure. Billy Hatcher: If it's from the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, you can tell it's good. Croc: If only it was on the N64 too. That robot game: Being a house-cleaning simulator isn't a good way to win the crowds over. Buck Bumble: Try getting the title's song out of your head. Vectorman: Oh balls, balls, BALLS! Punky Skunk: Chill out, BITCH! And yes, the main antagonist IS named Badler. Keith Courage: I can only get sucked into a rainbow so many times. Scud: Either you kill everyone or they kill you. Captain Commando: Stick to the arcades. The two of you should make a sequel to this video. Don't forget to include the star performer of Sunsoft. I'm waiting for you, Aero.

What about Aero the acro-bat and Ristar?

Aero was in multiple games so maybe he isn't really a failure? Ristar was awesome though.

It was? I only remember playing Aero the acro-bat 1 and 2, and now nobody remembers Aero. And yes, Ristar was awesome!

I'm surprised that Chibi-Robo's characters and story weren't touched on at all, they're what made the game really unique.

Not all of these are mascots.
@YamatoFukkatsu

bigbangbot Indeed. Though, the actual definition of a mascot might seem vague, but I really doubt Chibi-Robo would count. For Christ's sake, the game was published by Nintendo, and unlike Pokemon, it wasn't exactly one of Nintendo's bigname subsidiaries that developed it, not to mention there was little to no promotional hype surrounding its mere existence.

They actually could say that Tommy Vercetti is a failed mascot because after Vice City he never appeared in GTA games

Scud was a real treat to see. I had never heard of that one. So how about Gex? I seem to remember a push on that game. Never took off I guess. Lastly, thank you Game Sack for another amazing video... I just can't get enough!!!
