It was built to take the boats up to the union canal from the forth and Clyde canal we have locks in the forth and Clyde but not in the union which is flat all the way from falkirk to Edinburgh and i just have to look out my window of my house and watch it 🏴

You could transport goods like coal across the country, where either one or the other waterway would not go to, but when you combine both, you could reach these other places with the cargo ships. Nowadays it's for tourists, yes, a pleasure ride, sure... ;-)

Ignore the comment below which is incorrect, the two attractions are both in the Falkirk area of Scotland and in easy walking distance. There is a pedestrian path between them which is essentially the canal towpath.

@@iainmacleod4007 Let me give a more accurate answer since you think its incorrect. It would take you 1 hour 30 mins to walk from the Kelpies along the canal, according to google maps. The attractions are at opposite sides of Falkirk. Walking the canal comes with a bonus game of stepping over the dog mess left by the local scum. Something which is 1 hour 30 min walk is not near, then again someone from Edinburgh would always asume they know best as Edinburgh, is pretty much considered England by most Scots.
