Glad you liked it and congratulations on making it through the entire series. I'm not a huge Flanagan fan because of all the exposition but he made the right move in letting the always stellar Bruce Greenwood deliver a lot of it.

Have you watched the series? Him and Carla Guaidno (totally butchered her last name) were phenomenal in this. There’s this way that she uses her eyes to convey such an array of emotions at a time. It’s so impressive! I tried to give Bly Manor a shot and didn’t even get through the first epsidoe but that’s when I wasn’t really aware of the context behind the story so I could see myself trying it out again just for the gorgeous set design alone. Thanks so much for watching!!

omg I've been waiting for your reaction to the series and it did not disappoint! For real though, that second episode is what made me continue on, as well. And wow, was I glad I did! Sibling relationships are a big part of what appeals to me about gothic storytelling so I was definitely invested in Madeline and Roderick's backstory, but I totally agree with you that I wanted more about how the kids grew up. I also wanted more with Morella since her story to me was the most authentically tragic. Frederick definitely didn't suffer enough for my liking lol And I really wanted more with Lenore and Roderick because I sort of feel that was the only relationship that really gave him moral grayness. I enjoyed this series but I'm still more about the two haunted house series because they do grief horror so well. The clothing was *chef's kiss* and using color stories to flesh out character motivation is one thing I think Flanagan does particularly well. Am I glad you mentioned that acting! I had the same problem with the younger actors and I kept thinking about how much more forcefully Juno's story would have landed for me in the hands of a more experienced actor. The scene where she realizes why Roderick is with her was very frustrating to me because it felt one note. I liked the actor well enough in Midnight Book Society but I just thought they were miscast as Juno. And YES, we all deserve kitchen bowling lanes and to live like the 1% !!

Episode 2 was by far my favorite in the entire series! And you are SO right- we needed more time to really develop that connection with Morella for that Lenore-Verna scene to really resonate with the audience in an even more powerful way. That didn’t occur to me before I read your comment but she really didn’t have much about her shared with the audience besides that she is good at making cakes 🤣 We needed more to care about her awful situation beyond it being obviously awful. It’s so funny that you mention being fustrated by Juno because I originally included a section where I talked about her acting skills (or lack there of - eek!) but cut it out due to time. I figured it was implied when I called out the actors who played Camille’s two assistants lol. It’s so odd that there were so many miscast actors in one series!

Your chocolate frog pillow! There were quite a few jump scares that got me in this show. I loved this show and need to rewatch it. I felt like I got a lot out of it reading the stories then watching the episodes that correlated with the work from Poe. And Verna! I loved seeing her slip into so many roles so convincingly

Those jump scares got me too 😂 Like right before Camille was mauled and snapped the photo of the monkey 😂 And oh my goodness, Carla Gugino was freaking AMAZING. How does she get her eyes to communicate both sadness and joy all at once so authentically? Literally Emmy worthy performance!

I rarely finish tv series. I just get bored at some point. What's so funny is, that as an older person, I remember talking to friends in the mid-2000's about the ungodly length of network tv shows (20+ episodes). My friends and I talked about this utopic future where tv shows would only have 8-10-episode seasons. We were convinced that shorter seasons could not possibly be boring because series creators would have to cut out all the filler, scenery chewing, and unnecessary side plots that go nowhere. We were so wrong. LOL! Streaming has proved that you can have a six-episode season, and it can still be boring. Anyway, great video, Lauren!

You and I are the same about series 🤣 It’s not that I am picky (because who am I to think I’m so special arbiter of taste lmao) but I have very niche tastes and interests. So it takes ALOT for me to become invested in a series. Like for example, I have watched the entire series of criminal minds all the way through twice. Then they did that reboot last year and I saw the first few episodes and then totally forgot about it, never to return 🤣

@@happyhauntslibrary - I used to be a completist, but when I turned 40, I started DNFing whatever show, movie, or book was not doing it for me. There are just so many mediums of entertainment competing for our attention. I don't seem to be able to tolerate mediocre entertainment anymore, and for some reason I am least forgiving of tv shows. I will power through a 10-episode podcast with ease, but I rarely make it through a season of a tv show anymore. I have definitely become picky with my free time, especially since I fell in love with BookTube during the pandemic.

I really love this series and Mike Flanagan's work. I read each of the children represented the seven sins, Roderick & Madeline, as one included, like vanity, wrath, lust, etc. Just another interesting way to look at it. Definitely a rewatch because Flanagan leaves easter eggs! 🖤

I'm SO bad at finishing series. I start watching them then distract myself away from them lol! But I'm part of a Flanaverse group, we're group watching a couple of seasons every week and hoping to get through several of his series once we're done. We're on Haunting of Hill House at the moment, and watching episode 5 and 6 this week. I've seen Hill House already, but rewatching is helping refresh my memory. I haven't seen anything else by him yet, so this group will hopefully help me watch the rest! Your review of House of Usher has me convinced to watch it! I...don't remember if we're watching that one in the Flanaverse group, I'll have to look at the chart. Also, I love your cauldron mug and witch hat charm tea steeper! And your vampire teeth earrings!
