The Donkey Kong Rap is a beloved song nowadays. Its appearance in the recent Super Mario Bros. movie left everyone smiling... (well, except for one person).
Years ago, when it was conceived for the video game Donkey Kong 64, the story wasn't as rosy. Young people hated it, not to mention the reaction from the American religious community. This song has been through so much that I wanted to create this mini-documentary to shed some light on its fascinating history.
Fortunately, composer Grant Kirkhope is always asked about the DK Rap, so there was no shortage of research material.
