The way I see it, this show is another indication that Cartoon Network made a mistake cancelling Toonami at that time. I know they've since brought it back on Adult Swim, but the thing is, the original Toonami was very "teen"-oriented. There was also the You Are Here block, which also catered teens and action, but it only lasted two years. I'm certain that shows like Symbiotic Titan and Robotomy would have lasted much longer had either of these teen-oriented blocks stuck around.

The art style and animation are just oozing with Adult Swim. Particularly, this show looks almost exactly like Superjail. Superjail characters are more colorful, but the outlining, sped up quick movement animation, gradual facial "bounce" to major character exclamations, faded backgrounds, yellowish and orange color palette, violence, jagged lines, extreme detail, single layer faint shading, squarish poses, plain circles for eyes, "sloppy" line edges, similarly thin line edges, occasional backgrounds/wide shots filled with moving characters, backgrounds being mostly composed of one of two colors while also being flooded with numerous lines, and little dots of detail are all on point.

I was in the show's demographic aim when it aired, being a teen, and I was completely turned off by it. At that point in time, cartoons were ... for kids. Sure, there were some that were aimed at adults, on Adult Swim, but you had to go all out to achieve that. This wasn't a show that managed to do ... really enough of anything in any of the directions it wanted to go, hamstrung by its 11-minute run time. Every episode I remember watching was basically a generic school plot with wacky robot twist, and then slapstick humor in the form of robots being destroyed. If they brought it back with some refinement, I could see it doing well, I'm not saying there's no potential at all, but to say it was JUST bad timing is really understating what happens when you try and make a show too many different things at once. It felt watered down and less appealing than just most of the shows that were out at the time.

Ok but seriously, we need more modern era cartoons made SPECIFICALLY for teenagers. I feel like this demographic is really negletted nowadays, like if in society you're either a complete toddler who can't hear a single dirty joke or a grown-ass adult that can only watch extremely explicit cartoons. I never heard of Robotomy before but from what you said in this video it seems, indeed, a pretty interesting and promising tv series for teens, and I personally think it sucks that they cancelled it just because it wasn't appealing to the youngest.

Honestly, the flaws of assembly line-based education systems and how poorly most bureaucratic structures treat children (and people in general) are definitely themes that need to be explored more often. A show like this definitely has a lot of potential, although it would definitely have to be targeted towards young adults, since most children aren't equipped to understand things like why they're forced to sustain an education system that isn't even designed to educate children in the first place (I personally had the misfortune of gradually discovering the flaws of the education system the hard way as a child)

I remembered really enjoying the edge this show had as a kid, especially with very restrictive parents who wouldn't let me go anywhere near the Adult Swim block it was nice having a cartoon show that respected my intelligence and had more dry wit, and I think it really influenced a lot of the comics and cartoons I made around that age. Where they'd be just safe enough not to get my work torn up and confiscated by teachers *and* sent to the principal's office, but still have edgier subtexts that my peers could enjoy. As a kid who was starved for more mature entertainment yet had extremely restricted access to adult shows Robotomy just really scratched an itch for me.

Anyway I love robotomy and as much as I want more of it, it is kinda nice having another show u can just sit down and watch all of in under 2 hours. I actually remember this show; I remember that there was one episode where the Robot School took the robot equivalent of the special ed class ("Defectives" I think they called them) and were planning to cut costs by driving the space-bus into a star/ sun (if it was the star of their homeworld, it counts as its sun, right? I dunno), which our protagonists had somehow gotten onto, and yes, I know how horrible that sounds, but as Jordan mentioned, these robots basically operated under a low empathy, ultraviolent mindset where having humane or empathetic traits got you scrapped; for the Robot School Faculty, it was a simple financial decision, to anyone else, an atrocity. In another episode, Thrasher and Blastus were trying out for the "Murderball" team, with Thrasher repeatedly dreaming about winning his sweetheart's love (and dragging her off to his mountain citadel, an oddly specific detail that repeatedly popped up in the episode), but because they're high-school dweebs with no athletic prowess, they instead get shady drugs from a creepy bot (I think it was supposed to be the janitor?), which cause them to become huge and more menacing versions of themselves, speaking in an unintelligible caveman-esque grunting. They are eventually placed under pressure by the school and their peers to keep winning the games for them, while the former is more suspicious of them, thinking they somehow cheated. The duo have to win the game, but they're also trying to stop once they begin to realize the "After-Effects" of the drug from repeated use (namely, that it makes you ugly and creepy, as the janitor-bot explains that he used to use it all the time when he was younger, treating the viewer to an unpleasant close-up of his time-worn, disfigured visage, and further informs us that he became the janitor when no one else would hire him; this understandably freaks out both Thrasher and Blastus, whom swear off the stuff). It's been so long, yet I can still remember it quite well, if with some difficulty because, well, it was twelve years ago. I was still in Middle School at the time. I honestly kinda liked it because I was (and currently am) a major sci-fi aficionado.

I actually really enjoyed this show as a kid, mainly because I was the edgy kid who stayed up past bed time and sneaked into the living room at night to watch adult swim just to see violence, this show was literally made for me. In all honesty I feel like the biggest reason it failed is that it wasn't advertised enough. I stumbled upon this show by complete accident when I left my TV on after the weekly adventure time/regular show new episodes had ended. I don't remember seeing any commercials for it, and almost no one at my school knew about it.

I discovered this show a few years ago by chance, and I loved it. All the things being pointed out as issues with the show were actually what drew me to it. It felt like this middle ground between Adult Swim and Cartoon Network, like it refused to be boxed in to either.

This reminds me of another show released a couple years later, Problem Solverz. That one also felt like a show that would've worked better on adult swim, but by writing it for the normal CN block pretty much couldn't find an audience either. And at least this show had an appealing aesthetic, I remember being weirded out by seeing the Problem Solverz commercials ahead of its premiere.

While it would've been more at home at adult swim i say it still would've flop, it's over flashy colors and ugly character designs, and immature humor was it's downfall.

I was in college when this show came out. I was even going for an animation degree, which is why I kept up with cartoon blocks! I remember this show being pretty hilarious, but I was definitely more of the demographic they were aiming for at the time. Great episode! I had pretty much forgotten that this was a thing!

Ah the Superjail for kids! Ok but seriously I was barely in high school when this was airing, use to actually enjoy watching this show due to that connection SJ! connection and just the stupid pointless violence. Like right off the bat I loved the designs and animation too. It was just all too fun. Granted it FELT like it wasn’t suppose to be on CN due to the level of robot violence lol It reminds me how in some shooters or just violent games in general throughout the decades would sometimes have a “kids mode” where the gore and blood could be switched on or off. This is what it felt like to me at least, as If you switched off the gore from SJ! and would instead swap it out with robots. Weird explanation yeah but you get what I’m saying. I honestly wondered how long this show would go on if it didn’t end the way it did. Like it just felt different from what was playing at the time. Nothing groundbreaking of course but still different.

It's weird that he didn't mention that it was by the same creator as Superjail, Christy Karacas. The two shows have so many similarities it's uncanny. I always viewed robotomy as a superjail clone but the gore replaced with robot psudo-gore thus making it "child friendly"

I remember watching this show in middle school. I thought it was Superjail but for kids, I thought that was why it felt more mindless/random. Unlike Superjail there was nothing of interest for me. It was no Regular Show that’s for sure. I knew it was going to be cancelled within one season but it stopping before season one ended was over was surprising.

I remember loving this when it came out, but totally forgot about it until just now. Watching the clips in this video is bringing back such vivid memories. Also, the way you describe the show reminds me a lot of Super Jail, which i think is further proof it would have done far better on Adult Swim. The structures are different enough to make it not feel like a clone, in my opinion.

I remember seeing this as a kid and even then thinking it had pretty good animation. I'll admit it didn't feel fully appropriate for CN but it aired "so late" that I that it was a show that was supposed to be a transitioning program to AS. Like the final still somewhat appropriate show to get kids to wrap it up while also being a little edgy for the AS audience to nibble on whilst waiting for it to start up,

I actually did remember watching at least one episode from this show when I was little. I thought it was okay when I first saw it and I didn't know what was really happening in the show either. But it's crazy to see it be canceled so quickly, the show had some potential, at least it would have more if it aired on Adult Swim. And you have a good point about the other robot shows, I only remember watching a few episodes of Robot Boy and then it was wiped from existence. I wonder how many more shows CN given this kind of treatment.

I was SO excited for this show when it first came out. Michael Buckley, one of the creators, was my favorite author when I was young, and I've loved Cartoon Network since I could remember. When I heard he was making a show for it, I was HYPED. It was like the stars had aligned for me and delivered something I could only dream about. I tried to watch it every time it came on and I was actually sad when they stopped showing it

This reminds reminds of the old, actual creative side of nickelodeon. It gives me heavy ah! Real monsters vibes. I'd love for them to put it on streaming, but with the merger I think we all know how it will go. But I do think it'd still be liked if Netflix or Hulu got ahold of it. Lord knows the Futurama has been tossed around and revised, and I'm really happy for tuca and bertie. I feel like it could be picked up and ever so slightly more raunchy and it might take off, something akin to the level of clone high.
