Abigail values survival. She says “Finally, I’m safe,” at one point. She’s lived through horrible poverty. She’s desperate not to go back. Thus, she’ll always be insecure and manipulative because the fear of falling never goes away. Lady M has far more security in life, and thus, can probably afford more sentiment and high minded morality. Which doesn’t excuse Abigail, but it does inform her perspective. When the rats aren’t fed, some eat each other. Inequality does this. Everyone becomes a pawn or a player.

Great comment. What I not understand is why Abigail just gave up and resigned herself to misery at the end? I didn’t understand why both she and Lady M just changed personality in the final act. The ending just felt off, because both the Abigail and Lady M we saw at the end weren’t the same women we saw before. Those women would have fought to the end.

@@pressrepeat2000 well, time had passed. Both women changed. Abigail because she became resigned to the emptiness of the life she chose and Lady M because she gave up on her lover asking her back. Their scheming ultimately amounted to all three women being miserable and confined by the society they live in. What exactly would Abigail have fought for at this point? Her wealth and position in life are as good as it gets. She can’t make the Queen love her now that the wool’s been pulled back.

There's two quotes that really stuck with me in terms of where these two women are coming from. Abigail and "...steadfast morality will be a fucking nonsense that will mock me daily." Implying that the terrible things she might have to do now will pale in comparison to the atrocities she will have to commit if she doesn't find stability and become a Lady. And almost Sarah's response to that just shortly after. "We were playing very different games."

I am going to start this with a disclaimer: All film is subjective and everyone has there own opinions which is okay and a beautiful thing about film! I didn’t even like it. I guess I don’t get these really artistic movies. Call me “simple-minded” or say “I didn’t get it” but I thought Christopher Robin was the much better film of that year. It made me cry more than 5 times throughout the movie with tears dripping down my face. (I lost count after 5 because I was so emotionally and mentally exhausted and I had to make it through the rest of the film).

I think you're wrong about the part with the healing herbs, I think she starts looking for a chance to climb from the very beginning and ultimately this blind thirst ends up destroying her. Anyway nice video! love the movie too.

I really loved this movie and I love hearing all the different things people uncover and think of it! I personally thought that the film was more a commentary on love, as all of Yargos' films are (Lobster how love is viewed in society, Killing of a Sacred Deer is about sharing or the feeling of having to choose between giving love between children vs spouse). I think that he believes love is being able to be true to a person, ie tell them when they look like a badger. But this harshness can often conflict and be overruled by flattery.

This movie is great and it reminds me bit of Barry Lyndon. Where Emma stone is Redmond Barry , and with the difference being here in this movie Emma stone reconciling her difference

SIR Lord Henry mortimer: I agree - there's much in common between Redmond Barry and Abigail. Both spend most of their lives attempting to climb the 'social ladder' and both - especially Barry - seem to come to regret, although Abigail seems to have won a mostly hollow victory - I mean, she doesn't appear terribly happy by the movie's end.

i noticed also : the idea of "being careful for what you wish for". "biting off more than one can chew" - - and importance of people in positions of power because of having the skills and qualifications as opposed to cheating / tricking / charming their way to the top.

The film is about decadence, which is reflected in the decadence of the style. Like decadence, the film has plenty of fun, but there's an underlying sadness and harshness that forms the weak structure supporting the fun

Definitely a great film, I notice Lanthimos uses ancient themes from the age of antiquity in a lot of his films. In The Favourite he uses the concept of Pyrrhic victory to describe Abigail. The winner...yet at what cost. Also should have won the artistic big three in my book (writing, directing, picture).

I would argue the two of them are merely the most successful at caring about pointless things for the sake of power. We are very clearly shown that everyone in their world is also only doing these things as a vie for more power they just don't have the benefit of being able to get close to the queen in the same way.

Aside from the clear absurdity and the excess, I saw the use of long shots (in the more serious scenes) as a way of relating the three main characters to what the palace means to them. To Anne it's shoes too big to fill in anymore, to Abigail, it's what she wants to get and to Lady Marlborough it's the thing she wants to maintain/protect as it is.

This is one of my three favourite movies I watched at the cinema in 2019. Accidentally, all of them deal with the social and psychological dynamics of power, impotence and violence. If you are interested in this kind of movie do yourself a favour and don't miss out on "System Crasher", "The Favourite", "Joker".

This movie was simply amazing, although the ending didn’t make sense at all for me, and just felt off. We saw these two women, Abigail and Lady M, battle life and their circumstances and give it their all, yet somehow, for unexplained reasons, both very suddenly “gave up” and accepted their miserable fates in the final act. Why? Their characters, as the movie clearly had previously shown, would never had done that! The whole point was that they did anything and everything required to get ahead, to be in control, no matter how bad things got, and whatever physical and mental abuse life would throw at them. Their whole purpose was to thrive at any cost. And in the last 15 minutes of the movie, both stopped doing just that, and lost any will and purpose. The ending just felt off the way it was portrayed, as it didn’t make sense for the characters to just accept misery. They weren’t recognisable. You can’t change a character you’ve built up for the whole movie into something completely different just to get the ending you wanted.

I felt like this film was highly underrated! I really adored it. I kinda disagree with the way you said Queen Anne has moments where "she goes crazy". It's kind of a lazy way to summarize it. And saying that has a broad connotation to it and is somewhat dismissive of the complex reasons behind her dramatic emotional outbursts. Besides that this is a great little snippet exploring the film.

the black and white in their clothes, really made me think of them being portrayed as chess figures. No matter how high they climb the ladder, they don't have true freedom. They're still just part of the same game that restricts them all.
